Magpies soar again!!!
Another great weekend for playing footy and another successful weekend for the improving Magpies.
Warners Bay forfeited the 18's match.
The First Division match was a disappointment. Warners Bay were a completely different side to the one we beat in round 2 of the competition with only half a dozen players that played in that second round match making an appearance in this match. Warners Bay were hard at it from the first bounce and were too strong and physical for us in the centre winning the majority of centre bounces, many leading to goals.
It was a match that we never got into and the strong Warners defence made what scoring opportunities we had difficult. It was all over by half time with Warners posting a ten goal lead. The last quarter was our best quarter as we started to get a bit of mongrel about our play and held the opposition to two goals but it was too little too late with Warners Bay convincing winners.
Shannon Colbourne was our only goal kicker for the day, Frewin had another strong game, Robbo tried hard all day, Boylan had another standout performance and was duly awarded the mug. A special mention goes to Fletch for our new look strip, apparently the crinkled, unironed look is in this season.
Riding high on confidence we were keen to take on the Bulldogs and make it back to back wins in the Black diamond Cup match . The match started evenly enough but by the end of the quarter we had started to assert our authority and dominance on the game going to the break with a slight but handy lead. We won every quarter bar the third but rammed it home in the last to win convincingly and record our second win in a row.
Our "hard at it" aggressive style of footy taming the Bulldogs to the tune of 126-64. Mick South was a tower of strength in defence holding up the backline, Lovell continually backed himself to drive the ball into attack. Jim Pinner again did the job for us at fullback, our runners running ragged. Jade Matthison again proved his worth in the forward line and has really stepped up for us in the last month, his goal kicking akin to the Akermanis display on Sunday. Tim Hillman is another that is playing good consistent footy and has made the centre position his own. Billy Denniss doesn't get the credit he deserves. He is always on the bottom of packs, but it's his second efforts and one percenters that make the difference.
What was pleasing form the sideline was the skills on display, the second phases and the overall confidence exuded by the boys. They were never afraid to back themselves. Well done to Mick South who was rewarded for his hard work in defence with the mug.
Now that we have sent the Bulldogs whimpering home, we look forward to taking on the high flying Bombers this weekend.
