Well it wasn't a good weekend for us, losing all three grades to Cardiff. The bad run started in the U'18's who were convincingly beaten to the tune of 1.1-7 to 20.24-144. Little did we know that it was a sign of things to come.
In what was a disappointing result, those to try hard were Michael Barrie, Lawrence Legge who made his return from injury, Mitchel Logan, Mattie Wehl and Pat Barrie.
First Division showed a bit more resolve and arm wrestled it out to the end. Cardiff got the jump on us in the second quarter and we just weren't able to peg them back, losing by 4 goals. The boys are starting to find a bit of form and familiarity with each others play and if they continue working hard, a win isn't far away.
Standout players were Darren Beecroft who was playing his first game of AFL and showed how it's done, Kris Clouten, Geoff Fletcher, Shane Armstrong and Brad Laing who was the deserved winner of the mug for his gutsiness, hard running and second efforts.
We knew things weren't going to get any easier playing last years Black Diamond Cup Premiers and they proceeded to give us a football lesson. They were just too big, too strong and too fit for us. They are a very well drilled side, the yardstick of the competition and where we have to strive to get to. We will pick up the pieces and train hard throughout the week in preparation for this weekend's clash against our old foes Killarney Vale in what is effectively the local derby.
Chris Becker never gave up and has been a real find for us in the ruck, Travis Christian, Nick Greentree, Jim Pinner and Mat Penny all had strong games. The mug for BOG went to young Steve Lovell who continually backed himself and was instrumental in our defence and attack out of the backline.
We are pleased to announce that the Wyong Leagues Club Group are once again on board as one of our major sponsors. Please see the committee for your membership form if you are not already a member.
It was good to see a number of players supporting our major sponsor, The Grand Hotel after the game on Saturday. There are a few things in the pipeline to further improve the function room for us including games machines and a pool table.
Don't forget to purchase your Wyong Lakes membership keyring. The pop in and see the guys at the Grand Hotel Wyong, and show your keyring for a subsidised meal any night of the week.
