No.1 Sportsground was a picture, the City 2nd Div’n recorded a solid win in the earlier game, the weather was perfect so there was no excuses for the 1st Div’n. And they delivered. The Bombers only goal game early in the first quarter, it was all City from then on. Co-Coach Mark Wheeler was dominant in the centre, Neville Moyle led all day with his footy smarts showing them way for the Blues, ripping the ball out from the packs and linking in with great passages of play. BK was in his back pocket – they seemed to wax the ball between themselves in the first quarter. City banged on 7-3 with goals to young forward Damian Thompson (2), Ben Konetschnyk (2), with singles to Jono Hamilton, Danny Hamilton and Owen Dawes.
The second term continued on from the first however City has forced wide by KV with a great number of wasted opportunities. Trying to jag goals from tight angles is not the team way at City – there will be a great focus at training in coming weeks to avoid a repetition of a 4-9 quarter of footy. There were some good goals kicked when play went to the coach’s instructions. Andrew Ednie linking with Danny Cannizzo to Damian Thompson to Ben Howarth from a goal using the corridor was the highlight of the quarter. Heath Robinson and Lee (Leeroy) Graham repelled KV, turning defence into attack pushing the ball up forward through the likes of Howarth, Ednie, and Cannizzo. 2nd quarter goals to Dawes (2) and Howarth (2) - City went into the sheds for half time 11-11 to 1-0.
Despite laying out the preferred route to goal during the half time Coach’s addresses, City were again caught pot shotting for goal from crazy angles. But as the quarter went on the way-ward approaches to goal started to straighten up thanks to strong leads (and 2 goals) to Damian Thompson. John Matthews showed good poise to centre a long pass into the ‘G’ spot to BK for a goal with big Owie Dawes having continued strong influence at Centre Half forward for another goal. But with another 6 behinds booted, the score could have been a lot better at the final break – City sitting on a 15-17 to 1-0 lead.
A more targeted approach to goal worked in the last term as barrages were made from mostly in front. This was thanks to plenty of quality ball delivered from up-field as the back line repelled anything coming there way, turning it into attack using the corridor on an increasing basis. Good passages of play included Moyle waltzing around the pack getting it onto Graham with a great pass to Damian Thompson for his 5th. Another from a solid passage of play from the backline up the middle of the ground to first gamer Adam Johnston for his goal. Brett Saint even got on the scoresheet as the dour defender was given a trot up front – Moyle drilling him with a nice spear pass for a late goal. City were slamming them home through 6 different goal kickers in the last term being Cannizzo, Dawes, Johnston, John Matthews, Thompson and Saint.
The final siren sounded to see a percentage boosting score-line of City 21-23 149 to 1-1 7. City’s goals across 10 different players. Dawes (5), Thompson (5), Konetschnyk (3), Howarth (2), and singles to Cannizzo, Jono Hamilton, Danny Hamilton, Johnston, John Matthews, and Saint.
City were best served by Moyle, Thompson, Dawes, Wheeler, Graham, Cannizzo, Konetschnyk, Ednie, Johnston and Robertson.
The only injury from the day was to Andrew Ednie (dislocated shoulder).
Special mention goes to those who helped out – Lucas Johnson as runner (getting over a rib injury and itching to play), Jackson Tisdell on the water (good to see him up and about after his hammy in the first game), Jon Parker running the forwards (still with a niggling hammy) and Jayson Cleaver (crook ankle) running the defence. Funny statement before the game ‘listen to Cleaver but do the opposite – he ain’t a defender’) – it worked! Also a shout out to goal umpires Pete Nissan and Kyle Hamilton, Club Umpire Josh Young (who also did the earlier game), Team Manager Murray James, Ground Manager John ‘Homer’ Janczuk and our physios Heather and Zoe. Many hands make light work so a sincere thanks to all.
