The Newcastle City Team of the Decade 2000-2009 was selected following a rich period in the club's achievements on the field - the first ten years of the new Black Diamond AFL competition. In that time, the club won 3 First Grade Premierships (2003, 2008 and 2009), were twice Runners Up (2006 and 2007) and twice Minor Premiers (2003 and 2007). The club also won four Reserve Grade and four Under 18 premierships during that period.
In addition to the team achievements during 2000-2009, two players won the coveted Elliott/Davey Medal for BDAFL B&F – Jason Coulloupas in 2003 and 2004 and Luke Rawnsley in 2008. Courtney Knight won the Maurice Goologong Medal for BDAFL leading goal kicker in 2008, with 110 goals.
Also during the period, 359 players were registered - the Team of the Decade recognises the best 22. Also, five senior coaches and a number of team managers and trainers represented the club - the team of the decade includes the best of those too.
The general criteria for inclusion were 2 years/25 games minimum, outstanding skills in a number of aspects, outstanding effectiveness in position, team oriented (in a team sport) and contribution to the club. Many players could qualify for these criteria but these are “the best of the best”.
