Match review...
18's... A great all round team effort had the 18's winning margin at 55 points. The return of Matt Bailey was an instrumental part of the win, with 4 goals to boot and a mention in the top 6 players for the day. Goal kickers for the day also included Faulkner, Rawson, Crace, Marshall and McDonald. These boys also got a mention in the top players. Well done guys!!! Also to all the support people of the 18's who are doing a marvellous job, including coach, team managers, runner and water runners.
Ressies... The Ressies had a similar win to the 18's with a 56 point margin, for one reason or another the Ressies were short this week which saw the long awaited return of our dedicated Committee member TUBBS. Goal this week were shared between Scanes 5, Deed 4, Hawtin 3, Dawes, Kavanagh, wilmott and Armagos all kicking 1 major each for the game. Stubbsie was happy with the all round performance of the team with his top 6 players of the match being Azza, Teaguey, Nathan, Brad, Timmy Kemp and Vice Captain Hayden all putting in a super effort. Again a huge thankyou to all involved who help in getting the Ressies on the park each week.
Black Diamond Cup Match...The Blues have followed on from their strong second half against Terrigal with a solid four-quarter effort to down Killarney Vale in perfect conditions at No 1 sportsground. The near miss against the Panthers 2 weeks ago, together with a very disappointing Round 2 loss to KV were extra motivation for the City boys, who came out firing from the start. The win was set up with a 7-goal first term, with accurate kicking from set shots ensuring good returns from our dominance in the centre clearances. Martin Dinneen kicked 4 with some strong marking and true kicking, and the tower of strength Big Clarke Sturman was immovable deep in the forward line, also booting 4. The lightning fast roving brigade of Nesbitt, Cleaver and co. also chipped in with some key goals. The most pleasing sign for the coach was the tremendous tackling pressure shown, especially by the midfielders. City players showed great discipline in maintaining their focus on the job at hand as some Killarney players unravelled under the pressure applied. A very even team effort, but special mention to the ruckmen Keast and Clarke who gave their rovers first use of the ball, and Player's player Sam Wilkin whose work ethic and second efforts were inspirational for his team-mates.
80's Night... The 80s night was celebrated in retro style after a successful day for the Blues on the paddock. Glam rockers, leather pants and some disturbingly tight footy shorts were all on display for the first big social event of the year. Special thanks to Penny McGee and Sherri Nesbitt, the new Social Event Co-ordinators for setting up a great night. The disco balls were a special feature which singlehandedly transformed the clubrooms into an 80's disco dance floor. Our esteemed judges oversaw a fashion parade including AC/DC tributes, tight leather and men in ladies' pants, but the face paint seemed to catch the judges' eye for at least one of the Best Dressed prizes. Michael Jackson tunes were a popular request, in tribute to the great man's passing only a day before. Other popular requests from the 70's and 90's were unceremoniously snubbed by DJ Bot Bot, who made it his mission to maintain the authenticity of the 80s theme. A disco dance off was noticably missing it's star attraction in Mitchell Knight, but others made valiant attempts to invoke Jackson and Travolta. Unfortunately the result was somewhere between Gumby and Napoleon Dynamite. Some woeful impromptu karaoke duets from Stewy and Dozer had revellers pulling their wigs over their ears, but the mood was never dampened, the Big O and Tubbs were forced to move on revellers out onto an unsuspecting Newcastle, at last drinks.
Thanks to everyone for supporting the night!
