In controversial circumstances the 2007 Newcastle City Cup was been run and won by Drew's Crew in a night of fun and frivolity at the NCAFC No.1 Clubrooms.
The six lead-in races were won by a good mix of syndicates with the likes of Steve Wilmott, Barb Grant and Pete Rizzoli making their way into the final alongside Chewy's Boys and the eventual winners Drew's Crew.
A stirring rendition of the National Anthem was performed by our recently crowned City Idol Pete Rizzoli much to the enjoyment of the strong crowd on hand. Race caller Mark Hope eventually got the Final underway and it was Chewy who was showing the field a clean pair of heels early. Wiley Willie was not too far behind with his two steps forward-three steps backward jockey on board.
The race marshall was doing his best to restore order despite a number of sneaky kicks of the dice from the strong crowd in attendance and things were really starting to heat up as the horses approached the finishing post.
In a flash it was Chewy who bolted the pack to cross the finish line to the cheers of his triumphant Syndicate, but it was not to be as a clearly flustered Race Marshall called for a re-roll, unbelievably of both dice, despite the fact that it was only the second dice which had been inadvertently interfered with.
As if a bolt of lightning has struck the room in an instant the (dice) tossers who happened to be from the winning connections had somehow rolled their own number up twice in a row, and before the crowd knew what had happened Drew's Crew had crossed the line on Enright's Delight in First Place and began a series of crazy soccer-like celebrations not before witnessed at the No.1 Clubrooms.
Chewy and Co. were left alone and distraught after having seemingly been robbed of victory in the prestigious City Cup final but had no option but to accept the cruel twist of fate they had been delivered. The Race Marshall quickly scampered his way from the course fearing retribution as the Second and Third Place getters made their way past the post.
All in all a top night despite some dubious decisions and most importantly a great money spinner for the Club with just under $1000 "donated" to the Club on the night.
Many thanks to the Nilands for their fantastic work again and to Mark Hope for his race calling duties.
For those unable to make it along the entire race card is attached for your enjoyment.
Photos of the night will be up on the website over the next few days.
