Newcastle City recorded an emphatic 83-point victory over the Gosford Tigers at Adcock Park in Round 3 of the Black Diamond Cup. Courtney "Chris" Knight continued his great form booting five goals, along with Dave Woerner who also kicked five and Michael Kemp who kicked three.
The first quarter was all one-way traffic with Big Clarkey handing the ball on a platter for the on-ballers, especially Woody who was slaying them in the middle of the park, in a superb first quarter effort.
Courtney and Buckets were proving a handful for their smaller Gosford opponents and first-gamer Doc was taking some great grabs across half back in the absence of an injured Bottles, and Cam Niland was finding plenty of space out on the wing. The Blues were able to take in a handy four goal lead at the first break.
The second quarter was a bit more even on the scoreboard with the Blues poor goal-kicking proving costly with four goals and four behinds to three goals two behinds in the quarter allowing the Tigers to keep their chances in the match alive. Drew Hodgson was playing well in the centre and up in the forward line and Kempy was marking everything that went his way as usual.
Coach Burns asked for the Blues to work harder in the third quarter and put the Tigers away. Again poor goal kicking from the Blues had the Tigers still clinging on leading into the last break.
The defensive set-up of the Tigers and the maintain possession at all costs game plan was holding the Tigers within reach, but a seven goal turnaround looked near impossible leading into the final break with a three man forward line on offer.
It took until the final quarter but the Blues finally found their way kicking an unanswered six goals to nil to run out comfortable 83-point winners.
As usual some inaccurate kicking cost the Blues on the scoreboard, but overall a pleasing effort from the Blues with Bottles, Strewy, Munners, Wagga and Burkey all due back over the next few weeks.
We now look towards another dour battle with the Warners Bay Doggies at Seamen Oval this weekend with all three sides finally playing at the same venue.
We also would like to thank the Tigers who made their way over to have a quiet ale or two with us at
The Settlers Tavern after the match and we wish a speedy recovery to the young Tiger Cub who went down injured in the third quarter.
