As the finals approach and get underway, and our emotions run high while we urge our coaches, players and support people to strive to bring us those trophies we so passionately desire and work so hard for, it’s easy to lose sight of who we are, our values, and how we would like to be and should be remembered for 2013.
Our club values and a code of conduct are there to guide us through our season and those things become so much more important to remember over the next six or seven weeks. True Blue has reminded us so well each week this season:
Sportsmanship. We need to show due respect to all our opponents before, during and after competing with them. By doing so, we will ensure we are physically and mentally prepared to conquer them and, in turn, earn their respect for how we have conducted ourselves, regardless of the result.
Trust. We need to trust each other; coaches, players, support staff and administrators, that we will all do all the right things to the best of our ability to give ourselves the best chance of success.
Openness. We need to be open and honest with each other, to highlight, with respect, where we can do better, but also to applaud good work and good performance.
Optimism. When things get tough, and they will, as not everything is going to go our way, whether it’s the umpiring decisions, the bounce of the ball, injuries perhaps, we need to rise to the occasion and believe that we can overcome those things to achieve success.
Collegiality/Togetherness/One Team. We can only be successful as a club, as any team can only be successful, if we work together to do all the things that need to be done, on and off the field, in support of each other, helping each other, to give ourselves as a club, One Team, the best chance for success.
These things apply to all elements of our club – all teams (players, coaches, team managers), our dedicated volunteers and support staff, our supporters, and friends who come along for the ride.
Let’s make 2013 a year for all to remember for not just our success on the field but for how we conduct ourselves as a club in the process.
