Our first grade arrived at Bateau Bay looking resplendent in the club attire as they climbed off the bus. They looked fit and ready for action. Game prep all went well and the warm up was sharp.
Enter the field, the siren went and the game was underway. Terrigal was running hot early - running hard, tackling hard and working well together. Their finishing in front of goal was also pretty good early and at the end of the first quarter they had posted a four goal lead. Our boys looked a little shell-shocked despite working hard to keep themselves in the game, led by Fiji, Lonno and new Blue Andrew Wilmott early on.
Second quarter was pretty even in terms of ball possession but our men could make no impact on the scoreboard. Despite our gaining more scoring shots, Terrigal's finishing was better and allowed them to extend their lead slightly going into half time. Our cause was not helped by a game ending elbow injury to Tommy Hunt early in the quarter (later revealed to be a broken elbow). Our men were having a go and not being intimidated by the hard hitting of Terrigal but Terrigal's pressure was showing on our scoreboard tally - 1 goal 5 for the quarter.
Third quarter was more of the same - an intense struggle where we held our own around the ground but couldn't convert to have any impact on Terrigal's lead. Avis, Keast and Jackson, through his tagging job on Bishop, stood out in keeping us in the game. Courtney was live up forward, holding sway over his opponent but again for little return on the scoreboard.
Our boys started the last quarter intensely trying to peg back Terrigal's lead but their efforts were met with strong, determined opposition. After having some early impact on the scoreboard, poor finishing again let them down and Terrigal eventually regained the ascendency to finish the game off well.
Overall all, we were beaten by a better team on the day that was more intense and worked better as a group. A good example of what we need to strive to achieve in games ahead and, without doubt, can achieve. Over the whole game, Avis, Knight and Fiji were our better performers with the remainder mostly being good in patches. We have the fitness but the weeks ahead will show how well we are prepared as a group
