All three Newcastle City teams made it a day to remember on Saturday overcoming a determined Killarney Vale Bombers at Adelaide Street Oval. With Ryan Wilmott and Mick Deed both celebrating their 100th games the teams efforts didn't dissapoint.
The Black Diamond Cup game was a highly physical and bruising encounter with players from both sides going in hard and fair at the ball time and time again to the appreciation of the reasonably sized crowd.
Kicking into the breeze in the first term the Blues found themselves five points down at the quarter time break with a real match on their hands.
The Blues lifted in the second quarter and managed four goals to the Bombers two to take in a handy 10-point lead at half time.
For the Blues, Luke Rawnsley was repelling many an attack from Centre half back along with his partners in crime Stimpy Enright, Marty Dinneen and 100 gamer Ryan Wilmott.
The third quarter was more of the same with the Bombers turning the tables to kick four goals to the Blues two to hold a narrow two point lead at three quarter time.
The Bombers were playing their last quarter for the year and the Blues were expecting a ding dong battle and that's just what they got. With the Blues kicking to the scoring end it was Michael Kemp and Courtney Knight who were again proving the difference with their sensational marking and accurate shots on goal. In the end the Blues got up by 10-points in a good boost prior to finals.
Woody did a great job of his run-with role and D.G was a real bright-spark up forward providing a great leading target off the forward flank.
Hammer's goal was another highlight along with Marty's controversial free kick after Cotter tried to leap the light post and Clarkey's single-handed effort in the ruck was superb.
In the First Division game the Blues continued their strong claims for the Premiership for 2006 with a 10 goal win in trying conditions. After a number of late withdrawals the side were under the pump early but managed to put in the hard yards and come up with the desired result to ensure they won Minor Premiership.
Mick Deed in his 100th outing for the Blues slotted home four and was given the BOG from Joe Fleucther, Benny, Giggs, BK and Webbo.
Our under-rated Under 18's team again put in another solid performance to finish on top of the Bombers by 34-points.
The first quarter proved the difference with the Blues kicking five goals to nil to all but snuff out the Bombers early on in the match. To Killarney Vale's credit they played the game out hard and held the Blues pretty well for the remainder of the game.
Richard Antney played a top game on the half back flank getting the BOG from a consistent Ryan "Teagey" James, the classy Mitch Knight, Danny Mitchell, Hayden and Josh Nesbitt. Matt Bailey kicked four goals in another impressive performance.
So after the home and away season the Blues ended up with the Black Diamond Cup team finishing fourth, the First Division Team finishing on top and the Under 18's in second place.
So this Saturday the Black Diamond Cup team play Warners Bay at No.1 with the First Division and Under 18 sides having the week off before facing off against Woy Woy and Gosford respectively in Week 2 of the Finals.
In other late breaking news - due to popular demand TRUE BLUE will be making an appearance this week on the website due to the sensational bus trip and general tom-foolery on offer on Saturday night.
Any contributions are welcome so email them through to
