With the game theme of numbers at the ball, moral and enjoyment, City blew away a slow Nelson Bay from the get go. City quickly got the ball down to Josh Button who goaled. Not long after long kicks down to tall Justin Kelly resulted in another goal. Kelly’s second was a funny affair as he seemed to be confused with the goal and point posts, pulling out of a certain kick for goal only to regain, have a look and goal. Pretty funny stuff! David Bowden booted the other goal for the quarter. Scores saw City up 4-3 to 2-0 at the first break.
The second quarter was City’s strongest as they slammed in goals by Bowden (2), Kelly (2) and singles to Jadan Morton and John Crace. Another funny event with David Pritchard falling for the old early celebration syndrome, jumping and whooping after he thought he kicked a goal only to dig himself into the turf on learning it was only a point! City’s defence kept the Bay out all quarter – Cameron Niland and young Owen James working in well with veteran Ben Konetschnik. Owen Dawes was also strong at Centre Half Back. Half time scored City up 10-5 to 3-2.
The 3rd quarter started where the second quarter left off with Travis Walls strong in the ruck. Chris Webster worked in well with Josh Young forcing the ball forward that resulted in an early goal to Jimmy Drury. Ryan James dug deep in the centre. The Bay seemed shot but something happened. The Bay suddenly stiffened up and staged a comeback with several quick goals, with their mosquito fleet dominating all over the place. City managed to quieten them down late in the quarter with Youngy dashing across half hack again working in well with Webster, getting the ball up to John Crace who goaled late in the term. Scores at the final beak 12-5 to 7-5 City’s way.
The final term started like an arm wrestle, with no scores whatsoever for the fist 10 minutes. Just as the scoreboard attendant was about to go to sleep, Sammy Ross sprung into action with a long kick into the forward line resulting in a goal to Mick Deed. Ryan James got into the action quickly after with a long kick down to Captain Travis Walls who goaled – it seemed to take the sting out of the Bay. From deep in defence, Niland booted long to Morton who ripped a lovely long kick to Walls who again goaled. A hard fought turnover by BK got it to Walls who got it to Crace who goaled with a great snap. The Bay managed their first points in the quarter very late, sneaking in a late point then goal despite pressure from Ben Thompson, Owie Dawes, Owie James and BK.
Final scores saw City run out winners 17-8 110 doubling the Bay’s score 8-7 55.
City goal kickers Kelly 4, Bowden 3, Crace 3, Walls 2 and singles to Button, Deed, Drury, Morton and Ross.
Best for City being Walls, Crace, Kelly, Bowden, Ryan James and Young.
