Newcastle City continued their great Black Diamond Cup form into Round 2 against the Wyong Lakes Magpies at Tacoma Oval with a thumping victory in perfect conditions.
The day started on a great note with the Under 18's getting up by a solitary point against a gallant mini-magpies team. For all the parents and supporters that made the early trip down they were certainly rewarded with a great game of football.
With an undermanned side (playing without wings) the City boys were able to hang tough and come away with a win which may prove valuable come September.
Mitchell Knight led from the front kicking 7 goals with Wheeler, Atkinson, Antney, Kavanagh, Wozniak and a number of other boys playing good hard, disciplined footy.
The "uniform police" was an interesting little episode but other than that - a top couple of hours and a definite step in the right direction for the Under 18's team of 2006.
The First Division team put in a quality performance with captain Deedy again leading the way. Boland, Gigg's, Stewart, Holmquest and the evergreen Collings amongst the best in what was a terrific team effort. Coach Stubbsy pulled on the boots again and I'm sure was well pleased to get through the match unscathed.
Stubby's men are now sitting pretty in second spot and will enjoy the Easter break with a hit-out against the Marlins at No 1 awaiting them in a couple of weeks time.
The Black Diamond Cup team without captain Marty Dinneen (and no it wasn't because his recently TRUE BLUE featured car didn't make the trip) easily accounted for a shell-shocked Wyong Lakes Magpies.
With Woody and Rawnsley at the helm the Blues were looking in great form on Saturday and sent a nice message to the rest of the league with a thumping 20-goal win.
The small but dangerous forward line was a real treat with the Knight boys, new recruit Bourkey, Big "O" and Cam kicking 18 goals between them in a sparkling day for the goal sneaks.
Man-mountain Buckets was great in the ruck all day with Woody, Dooley and Westy certainly enjoying first use of the ball and driving the ball deep into attack.
The backline was solid with Mitch Niland starting his year well and ably supported by a reliable Rawnsley, Willmott, Hammer, Stoney and DG.
The most pleasing aspect was the number of quality players unavailable who will all be due back for our big clash this week against Cardiff. Burnsy will certainly be scratching the noggin this week picking his best 22.
Again a great effort from everyone who helped out on the sidelines and the cheering gallery was in fine voice all day. Mr Wozniak and Jen Hope timekeeping, President Hopey umpiring and our new Black Diamond Cup Team Manager Jimbob leading the way.
With only the one game this weekend we look forward to a great crowd of City supporters to cheer on the senior side against Cardiff at their new digs the Bill Elliot Oval and maintain our current top of the ladder position.
