The Newcastle City Blues registered an impressive trial game victory on Saturday 25 March against their more fancied rivals the UTS Bats.
In perfect conditions at Wickham Oval, the Blues were able to gain the early ascendancy despite kicking into a strong breeze in the first quarter. Extending the lead into the second quarter the Blues big men were causing some headaches for the travel weary Bats.
The third quarter was more of the same with the Blues holding the Bats to one solitary goal, kicked right on the three quarter time siren.
Coach Burns used the final quarter to make some changes and rotate the bench with the Bats putting some respectability onto the scoreboard with some late goals into the wind.
There was a lot to like in the Blues second hit out for the season with Courtney Knight kicking a bag and new recruit Michael Kemp taking some strong marks across half forward. With a few key players missing things are certainly looking promising for the 2006 season.
In the First Division game the Blues put in a solid performance going down by a couple of goals. A great game by Danny Mitchell and new First Division Captain, Mick Deed. Unfortunately one of our promising Under 18's recruits Kris Wozniak sustained an ankle injury. We wish him a speedy recovery.
All games were played in great spirits and the Blues can now look forward to Round 1 next week with a fired up Gosford sure to give a good account of themselves at home.
The Junior City members also had a great day out with what seemed like hundreds of Auskickers enjoying a skills clinic in the morning. Well done to the Senior City players who helped out with the kids, they definitely appreciated the session.
Thanks as always to our match day volunteers for providing the necessary off field support.
