It was anything but Judgement Day for City as their Reserve and First Grade racked up big wins against Lake Macquarie Dockers in perfect conditions at No.1 Sportsground. See more for the Reserve Grade match report.
A solid 2 weeks of focussed directional training paid off again for the City Reserve Grade with a solid win 28-9 177 to 4-5 29. The most pleasing part of the win was City’s accuracy by playing to instructions. Full Forward Daryl Anesbury racked up an incredible 12-1 in a man of the match performance thanks to many straight kicks from upfield to position. Unselfish play on many occasions really added to the player’s levels of confidence.
The trend of the game was set by City in the first quarter slamming on 8-0 to 2-1 with 3 goals to Anesbury, 2 to Josh O’Bryan and singles to Riley Clement, Jon Crace and Owen Dawes. Open forward space using the fat side of play was a feature allowing Anesbury to lead into that perfect piece of real estate – 30 metres out from goal and straight in front. Brendon Weir worked hard on the open wing with Crace also creating opportunities. Crace and Josh O’Bryan worked hard to switch play which resulted in several goals.
The second quarter was a bit more subdued with City booting 4-3 to 1-1 to go to the half time break up 12-3 to 1-2. Two Goals to Justin Smith and singles to Anesbury and Captain Ben Konetschnik. Smith made many hard leads up the ground – when he didn’t get the ball, Anesbury got into the space behind him to snare many a mark. The quarter was soured with an ankle injury to Beau McCosker who was stretchered off.
Half time break had co-coaches Deed and McQualter remind the players of past third quarter disappointments, pleading for a reversal of form. The response was flawless with another 7-6 to 1-2 added. Two goals each to Weir and Anesbury with singles to Crace, Smith and Josh Ford. A shoulder injury to Tim Sullivan saw the bench reduced to 2 but that didn’t slow City’s momentum.
The last quarter could have seen a more relaxed end to the game, but City fought against the temptation with their best scoring quarter for the year romping through with 9-3 to 2 points. Anesbury was on fire with 5 goals with singles to Crace, Mitch Evans, Jordan Stead and Brendan Weir.
Whilst a solid win was recorded, several areas were identified for correctional focus over the next 2 weeks prior to the Wyong game (away) 4th June.
For this game, goal totals were Anesbury 12, Crace 3, Smith 3, Weir 3, O’Bryan 2, with singles to Clement, Dawes, Evans, Ford, Konetschnik and Stead. City was best served by Anesbury, Weir, O’Bryan, Dawes, Crace and Smith.
Injuries to McCosker (ankle) and Sullivan (shoulder).
