Disappointment from the previous week’s loss to Cardiff was the catalyst for an improved performance by the Ressies. More focussed, planned training plus game preparation paid off as the lads went away the a big win 15-15 105 to 2-6 18. The large amounts of available players saw another mass amount of 11 changes to previous week’s line up. With a regular available list of in excess of 30 plus U18’s, rotations each week basically sees a new squad every game, leading to irregular performances. Short term it creates selection headaches. Long term it is creating a far greater discipline with team selections based on training and game performances. In addition the more available players we have deeper into the season, the better. This long term approach seemed to pay off in this game as the players followed the team process.
A steady start in the first term with goals to Armagos, McMahon and Webster, with scores 3-6 to 2 points at quarter time. Signs were positive with players following instructions and linking up with good flowing play. McMahon’s influence was evident.
The second term passed with City straightening up adding a further 4-2 to 1 goal going into the long break up 7-8 to 1-2. Two goals to McMahon, with singles to Dawes and Robertson.
The third term was again the slowest of all but a vast improvement on the last game – only 2-3 to 3 points added – goals to Deed and Ross.
The final term was the best, with 6-4 slammed home to 1-1, running out winners by 87 points. Last term goals to Crace, Dawes, Konetschnik, O’Bryan, Robertson and Webster. McMahon and Walls came off in the last part of the game - McMahon with a jarred arm and Walls with a popped shoulder putting a sobering end to what was a great win. Most likely 2 and 6 week outs respectively.
Goals were shared around across 10 different players, an indication of the team approach. City was best served by McMahon, Crace, Dawes, O’Bryan, Sullivan and Walls.
Next game against Lake Macquarie next Saturday 21/5/11 at noon will see more rotations with no fewer than 13 to come into available selection listing.
