In torrential conditions at Seamen Oval on Saturday, an under strength and inexperienced First Grade squad was put to their greatest test of the season against a determined and revitalised Warners Bay outfit. Coming off a close, hard fought win against Terrigal last week the side lead by Anthony Stewart took to a field that resembled more of a wetland than a football ground.
With many players starting in unfamiliar positions, the Blues got off to a slow start having the Bulldogs score an early goal against the run of play. The Blues soon responded with a strong contested mark and goal by Tim Sullivan. An extremely determined and focused City side slogged out a tight first half, heading into the main break just 4 points ahead.
The main break gave the Blues an opportunity to regroup and refocus on a disciplined and accountable structure for the second half more suitable to the conditions. Stewart rallied his troops requesting an increased intensity and hardness at the contest, and that’s exactly what they did. Structured around Sullivan and Keast as duel CHF, the Blues were far too strong and efficient scoring 4 unanswered goals heading into to 3QT with a unassailable lead of 25 points.
The passionate win was lead by the tough and ferocious on ball brigade of Stewart (BOG and Players Player), Knight, Joy, Hondow and Enright, and well supported by Josh Wheeler, Lang, Payne and Fiji Baker in defence and Keast, Cornwall and Calman in the ruck. Congratulations to First Grade debutants Sam Payne (named in best players) and Beau McCosker (1 goal) on a more than respectable contribution.
The Blues were able to hold back the Bulldogs in the final quart to run out a spirited 7.9.51 to 3.3.21 win. A convincing victory, in adverse conditions with all 22 players playing key roles.
An enormous thanks to all who toughed out the weather to be involved in the great day for the Senior Club; from water runners and supports to time keepers and medical staff.
