Mens Masters

WMFC Masters have commenced pre season training on Sunday mornings 9-11 at Waramanga. Come along if you can and have a kick. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen and any new players you know are keen. (If you haven't been before this is casual "park football" and a good place to be on a Sunday morning).

If you have time for some light reading then read on...

Thanks for those who completed the survey, there are some interesting ideas as a result. Following are some discussion points to consider for the upcoming season.

Divisions

As previously mentioned, Capital Football's intention for Masters is;

  • Masters Division 1 at 6pm and 8pm Friday Nights & Sunday 9am KO - not paired
  • Masters Division 2 at 9am Sunday to be paired with Masters Division 3 at 11am Sunday
  • Masters Division 4 at 11am Sunday to be paired with Masters Over 45s at 9am Sunday.

WMFC will need to nominate teams in February. With five Masters competitions we will need to consider which teams to enter. Could we enter a team in each division? At the moment this mailing list has enough members for three teams (div 1 not included), but with some recruiting it may happen.

Div 1
Our Division 1 team are a great bunch of blokes but they are largely self-contained. The new div 1 format above is partly in response to their prolonged dominance of the league and it is hoped that a number of new competitive teams will come out of the woodwork to challenge them this season. There is some scepticism that the design will work but we live in hope. If successful it will restore division 2 back to a more even competition. If the scheme does not succeed we will probably see a repeat of previous seasons which can mean a mixture of competitive and struggling teams in Div1/2.

Div 2/ Div3
The hope is that the new div 1 format will allow this group to flourish. There is a core of WMFC Masters players that have played this division for a number of season and along with the success of the Div 4 Currawongs last season, there is a good chance that we could enter this division with a core of 30-32 players. The pairing of divisions means that the squad travels together (games will be played at the same ground) and there are no penalties for playing between teams. Training and playing as a squad could bring better results on the weekend.

Div 4/ Over 45s
The best survey response came from Div 4 so we can be confident of nominating in this division. An interesting suggestion was to begin an Over 45 team. I know that there is a dominant Tuggeranong team in this division but unsure of the others. This could be done but it would mean losing talent from other divisions and recruiting well. It would be up to those eligible players weighing up the pros and cons.

Managers
Masters does seem to run well because we are mature adults (until we get on the field!). It helps when there is a good core of managers to share the load. Please reply if you are willing to be part of a managing group again or more than last season.

Div 2
Hunter Walters, Richard Jalland, Mark Hunstone (others?)

Div 3/4
Mark Taylor, Cameron Machintosh, Chris Brown, David Hakaria, Trevor Hughes? (others?)

Over 45s

Training

Survey said most of us are in this for the same blend of reasons - competition, social, fitness and getting active - but I was trying to see which aspects we favour. To be more competitive there has been some calls fro training to be more conducive to team play so the squad training would benefit that. Most responded that training was expected but the odd one would be missed due to "life". There was a call for "football brains" (i.e. div 1 players) to assist the lifting of lower divisions with some advice/hints. I'm sure this could be arranged. However, I was sure last time I played there were plenty of experts giving opinions!
