Burton off as Bayswater win

Bayswater coach Chris Coyne was left frustrated as star striker Steve Burton saw red in the final minutes of his side’s 5-2 victory over Armadale at Alfred Skeet Reserve in the All Flags State Premier League.

Burton was given his marching orders in the 88th minute for a late challenge, in which he went in studs first, leaving the Army fans on the side of the pitch demanding a red card.

Coyne felt Burton, who had opened the scoring with a simple finish one-on-one with the keeper, had been unfairly punished.

“The referee is always right in my opinion, I just thought it was a bit harsh,” he said.

“We lose a player now against Sorrento next week. It should have been a yellow card at best, but obviously these things happen and there’s nothing we can change about it now.”

Meanwhile Armadale coach Lee Bamber had a different view on the sending off.

“I thought it was a red card,” he said.

“There’d been a little niggling going on for a little while and Burton just snapped, he knew what he was doing.”

Despite the red card, Coyne was pleased with his side’s performance and felt they could have scored more as they missed several good chances to score in the second half.

“I’m pleased, some of the football that we played and some of the movement was superb and to be honest, I think we could of had another four or five,” he said.

Armadale scored a surprise goal less than 10 seconds into the second half after Trent Kay was caught in possession by Armadale’s Trevor Laure, who took one touch and fired the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Kay however, almost instantly atoned for his error by heading in Bayswater’s third merely three minutes later, leaving Coyne happy with his defender’s response.

“It was just one of those individual errors that you can’t legislate for,” he said.

“We’re trying to play football and we’re trying to play up from the back, you can’t have a pop at someone for an honest mistake.”

Bamber put his side’s results down to the quality of Bayswater, which featured former Perth Glory players Jamie Coyne and Todd Howarth, whilst also noting his own side’s injury woes.

“They were a better side than us, they’ve got too much quality,” he said.

“We’re struggling with injuries at the moment and we’re putting a team out that’s trying to compete and we just don’t have the quality on the field at the moment.”

Gustavo Giron Marulanda’s tap in, after he found himself with enough time and space to walk around Armadale keeper Cyril Sharrock, consigned Army to their second consecutive week of conceding five goals in a game, leaving Bamber to focus on his side’s defense.

“At the back we just weren’t good enough today, there’s too many one-man bands that go on solo runs, we lost our shapes and they hurt us,” he said.

“I don’t doubt the commitment of the players, but things just aren’t going for us at the moment.”

Armadale managed to score the goal of the game through Lance Louvie, whose free kick from distance flew straight into the top corner of the net, leaving Bayswater keeper Devon Spence with no chance of saving it.

Bayswater however, saw two brilliant finishes of their own from James Isaia, who turned in the box before slotting home, and Damien Catalano, who delicately rolled the ball into the bottom corner of the net in the second half.

With another good result, Coyne was left to look forward to next week’s big game against Sorrento at Frank Drago Reserve.

“It’s going to be a really tough game, there’s a lot of history between the two clubs and it’s one to look forward to as a player,” he said.

“The boys are already talking about it in the changeroom, it’d be great for the club if we get a few bodies down there, because it should be a really cracking game.”
