Bayswater keep up pressure with big win

Bayswater City kept alive their hopes of winning the All Flags Premier League with a 4-0 win against Armadale at Frank Drago Reserve yesterday.

Todd Howarth opened the scoring on the stroke of half time, before a double from Gustavo Catarcione and Andy Reale’s late strike kept Bayswater’s hopes of a league and Cup double alive.

It all goes down to the final game of the season next week, with Bayswater one point behind Stirling Lions. The brace from Catarcione helped the Black and Blues to victory and the Brazilian was delighted to help them to the win.

“We played well today after a slow start and it was nice to get on the scoresheet,” Catarcione said.

“It’s been a difficult season for me with injury, but I’m happy to be playing again, although I’ve got a slight knock on my calf today.”

The Brazilian’s goals were well taken and superbly set up by Todd Howarth, whose contribution was appreciated by Catarcione.

“The coach told Todd and I to work together and it worked today. We have to wait to next week and hope Stirling lose or draw, and we then have to win at Sorrento,” he said.

Bayswater were slow out of the blocks and Armadale went close to the opener on seven minutes. Dannie Richman’s cross found Rhys Loxley, who’s shot from 12-yards was well saved by Devon Spence low to his left.

A blast from the coaching staff had the deserved effect and Bayswater began to get on top.

“It was a sluggish start to the game, but we had made a few changes, with players coming back from injury,” Bayswater assistant Coach Stewart Moses said.

“Chris (Coyne) didn’t like what he saw and told the guy’s, but once we got the first one we knew we would go on and get three and four and that was the case.”

On the quarter hour the home side went close to the opener but Armadale keeper Cyril Sharrock saved low from Catarcione.

The Armadale custodian then produced a stunning one handed save to deny Catarcione on 27 minutes after Howarth’s though ball had set up the striker.

But in the shadows of half time the home sides’ pressure finally paid off with the opener. John Kearney found Catarcione who played in Howarth, who finished clinically past Sharrock to send the home side in front at the break.

Bayswater dominated the opening exchanges after the break. James Isaia’s shot was saved low by Sharrock before Paul McCarthy’s shot from the edge of the penalty drifted wide, after Sharrock had dropped Ross Cosgrave’s cross.

But on 59 minutes they doubled their lead with the goal of the game. Howarth and McCarthy combined to find Catarcione and the striker fired home via the post from the edge of the penalty area.

Catarcione was on the score sheet again ten minutes later. Again it was Howarth who was the supplier, his ball sending the striker clear and his lob beat Sharrock and went into the net despite Billy Quinncroft’s attempted clearance off the line.

The icing was put on the cake seven minutes from time when Bayswater added a fourth. Patrick Quinn cut in from the left and picked out Andy Reale and the substitute fired home from 18-yards.

Bayswater must now beat Sorrento next week away and hope Bunbury can take something off Stirling to take out the league title.

“Stirling had Gareth McGlynn sent off today and he is a big factor in their team. So hopefully they will miss him at Bunbury,” Moses said.

“Bunbury are on a high after winning today and obviously not getting in the NPL, they will want to prove something. And hopefully they’ll prove it to Stirling next week and take some points off them.”
