Knight at the double for Gulls

Gavin Knight made the most of his opportunities to bag a brace as Sorrento scored a 3-0 win over a young Armadale side in an All Flags State Premier League match at Percy Doyle Reserve yesterday.

After David Price had given the Gulls an early lead, Knight doubled the lead in the first half and then scored again in second-half injury time.

“When you get your chances you’ve got to take them,” Knight said after the match. “I had three chances all game and got two.

“I’ve been dubbed a free kick specialist but to get some goals in open play is nice and proves to people that I can still do it.”

The home side were 1-0 up inside seven minutes when Rhys Loxley tried playing a ball square out from the back and failed to see Price, who stole the ball and scored past goalkeeper Cyril Sharrock.

Ten minutes later and Knight had his first of the afternoon after Jamie Harnwell won the ball in the final third and Sorrento had an extra man forward. Harnwell played the ball square to Knight whose on-target shot from 12 yards took a deflection into the back of the net.

The away side could have easily dropped their heads after two costly mistakes but they continued to make Sorrento work hard.

Towards the end of the first half, Jack Salter went one on one with Curtis Aspden but could not find the shape on his shot to beat the keeper.

Sorrento were in control in the second half but neither team managed to create any clear cut chances apart from a Harnwell diving header in the 65th minute.

Knight’s second goal was more of what crowds have come to expect from the forward, who spotted Sharrock off his line and from 25 yards volleyed the ball over the keeper and into the net with a fine show of technique and vision.

Armadale coach Lee Bamber said his side performed much better than their previous match, despite having lost marquee defender Andy Todd this week.

“Toddy has signed with Stirling, which is a bit of a loss but that’s football,” Bamber said.

“Players come and go and I thought the boys who played today galvanised well as a team and there was a lot of energy.”

“The performance was there, but with so many young players there was just a bit of naivety.”
