Armadale scrapes past Gosnells

Armadale moved through the Night Series group stage after taking down local rivals Gosnells, however it wasn’t all smiles in the red and black camp.

Despite the 1-0 win, Armadale’s coaching staff was unimpressed with the squad’s performance, as squandered chances from Gosnells played a part in the result.

Armadale assistant coach Kevin Brophy made clear his squad’s performance did not match their potential.

“Pretty disappointed in the way we played today, we let them dictate to us, especially in the second half,” he said.

“We wanted to be a little better than that. We wanted to get the ball and dictate them, we didn’t do that.”

Brophy accounted for the number of new faces at the club, as Armadale look to find the winning combination for the season ahead.

“This is what pre-season is all about, we made eight changes again and it’s hard to get continuity,” he said.

Fast pace and strong tackles were the game’s themes as traditional rivalry was further fuelled by the possibility of moving past the group stage.

The pace of the first half was tiring to watch, even as a spectator, as both sides searched for the early break.

Chris Holland was the lone goal scorer, his header from just inside the 18-yard box dipped into the goal, midway into the first half.

The early goal didn’t slow the game down as Armadale looked to further their lead, while a draw for Gosnells would be enough to see them through the group stage.

The nail-biting second half saw chances go begging for both as Gosnells’ Ali Paredes danced his way past Armadale’s defence, but his shot went the wrong side of the post.

Neither side looked to tire, as the end-to-end play left for an anxious finish.

City’s Sean Taylor had a chance moments before injury time, as he cut in from the right wing, but his shot crashed into the side netting.

Football West will announce the upcoming finals fixtures of the Night Series later this week.
