Elliot Duncan makes Melville’s night

Any Premier League club in need of a goalkeeper? Melville City’s Elliot Duncan proved his worth after several first-class saves against a relentless Armadale.

Duncan’s first half saw him using every part of his body to keep his side on level terms as Armadale’s Rhys Loxley and Darren Francis peppered his goal.

His clean sheet was instrumental in Melville coming out 1-0 winners, as a second-half goal from Sas Slavujevic was enough to grab maximum points.

Melville coach Dan Evans was pleased with his keeper’s performance, however was quick to move the spotlight away from his new signing.

“He’s a good one Elliot (Duncan), I don’t want to say too much, he’s come from the ACT, he played in the Premier League over there,” he said.

“We’ve fallen on our feet, Elliot’s been a good signing and he’s committed to the club.”

The pressure was on from the start as Armadale’s right back Jackson Bealey’s 25-yard strike was shovelled off the line from Duncan.

Minutes later, a Loxley pass set up Francis whose rocket of a shot was palmed away from a stretching Duncan.

It wasn’t long until Loxley found himself with an opportunity; his shot looked set to crash into the right corner, only to be denied by Duncan’s elastic looking leg.

The surprise of a Division Two club scalping a Premier League club was lost on Evans as recent history has proven Melville to be a thorn in Armadale’s side.

“We have had recent success against them, we drew with them in the Night Series last year and we knocked them out of the cup, so the boys were confident,” he said.

Not getting too carried away with the win, Evans is treating the Night Series as part of the season’s bigger picture.

“It’s a pre-season comp and obviously we wanted to play the right type of football, so in the second half we did that.”

Next week Melville takes on struggling Forrestfield, while Armadale hope to put an end to Gosnells City’s winning form.
