10-man Inglewood win the points

Inglewood United came away from Alfred Skeet Oval with all there points after a 3-1 win against Armadale in week 14 of the All Flags State Premier Division.

Michael Baczynski put United in front at the break, before Wilf Dinsdale levelled for the home side five minutes into the second half. James Sammut regained the lead for United, and then moments later they were down to ten men when Baczynski was sent off. But the ten men added a third when Alex Caniglia scored, keeping them joint top of the table, and leaving Armadale only three points from the drop zone.

Armadale coach Lee Bamber made two changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Balcatta last week with Mark McClements and Josh Maddison returning from suspension, with Nathan Costello and Allan Claxton dropping to the bench. United coach Graham Normanton also made two changes to the side that beat Western Knights 2-1 last week, with Michael Baczynski and keeper Devon Spence returning, with both Ryan Clarke and Francis Soale out injured.

It was a great day for football and both sides had chances early. First on four minutes Alex Caniglia raced clear down the right and his cross shot had to be tipped over by the alert Cyril Sharrock. Moments later Dinsdale played a through ball to Raveshlan Kuppusamy, who was in on goal, but Spence was out quick to collect.

United, who were looking for their third win on the road in consecutive weeks, made the break through on 16 minutes. Sammut picked out Aleks Jovic down the left, his inch-perfect cross found Baczynski who headed past Sharrock from eight yards.

The home side looked for a quick response and on 23 minutes Joey Tavernese played Kuppusamy, the striker turned past Jack Clisby and Rikki Smith but his shot flashed was just wide of the target.

United were causing Armadale problems down both flanks, with Jovic and Caniglia both making good breaks and they went close to a second on the half hour. Caniglia found space down the right and played a ball into the path of Dannie Richman, his cross found Sammut whose close-range shot was superbly saved by Sharrock.

As the half ended it was the home side that were on top and on 35 minutes they went close to the equaliser. A short corner caught United napping and Dinsdale's shot from the edge of the penalty area was blocked, but Kuppusamy played the ball into Alan Darlington whose shot was well saved by Spence, the rebound falling to Tavernese who's first time shot went into the side netting.

Armadale were pressing late and the United custodian came to his sides rescue again in stoppage time to preserve their lead. Darren Francis' cross from the left found Tavernese, but the Americans header from six yards was superbly saved by Spence at full stretch.

It was a perfect start to the second half for Armadale and they were level on 50 minutes. A quick break saw skipper Nick Viaggio skip clear down the right, he played a diagonal ball across to Darlington, who picked out Dinsdale on the edge of the penalty area and the English import's shot flew past Spence and into the bottom corner of the net.

Despite conceding the early goal United continued to play some good football and were rewarded on 58 minutes. Jack Clisby broke out of defence and ran at the Armadale defence, before playing the ball into Baczynski. The striker raced clear as the Armadale defenders looked for the offside flag, that never came, and he squeezed the ball past Sharrock, the keeper did stop the momentum of the ball, but Sammut was alert to race onto the loose ball and fire home from close-range.

Their joy was short lived however, and on 64 minutes Baczynski, for some reason, lashed out at an Armadale defender and referee Tim Mihevc had no hesitation in sending him off. The loss of the striker didn't deter United and they went close to a third five minutes later. Richman found Jovic on the left, he cut inside Sam Loveless and his curling shot was well saved by Sharrock.

But the 10 men did increase their lead five minutes later. Sammut won possession and fed Caniglia on the right. The Perth Glory Youth winger ran at the Armadale defence before unleashing a powerful shot that flew past Sharrock and into the net.

Armadale looked for an instant response, but Darlington, and Francis' long range shots were off target, and with Clisby and Smith outstanding at the heart of United's defence they couldn't find a way through. United could have added a fourth in stoppage-time, David Perich's curling shot drifted inches over the top, but at the final whistle it was Inglewood with the points and skipper James Sammut was delighted with the win and getting on the score sheet.

"We knew it would be a tough game here and it was," said Sammut. "Credit to the boys we had to do it with 10 men for most of the second half, so we're delighted with the three points and to keep our seven game unbeaten run intact too," the former Perth Glory Youth midfielder said.

"It's nice to get on the score sheet, but at the end of the day the main thing is we got three points and it keeps us up the top of the table."
