Armadale stuns league leaders

Armadale moved up to eighth place on the All Flags State Premier Division with a stunning 3-1 win against league leaders Perth Soccer Club at Alfred Skeet Oval on Saturday.

Striker Raveshlan Kuppusamy deservedly put the home side ahead on 24 minutes, before a stunning volley from Tom Biss doubled their lead seven minutes into the second half. Kuppusamy added a third from the penalty spot, before James Isaia pulled one back for the visitors, but Armadale could have added another but Mitch Castrilli had his penalty saved by Alex Dunn.

"It was a great win for the club, we knew we could beat them and we worked hard and stuck to our game plan and got the rewards," said American defender Nick Viaggio.

The home side made two changes to the side that beat The NTC last week with Castrilli and Alan Darlington, who faced his former club, coming into the side to replace Jason Pottier and Blake Adams, who dropped to the bench.

Perth made seven changes to the side that thrashed the Western Knights last week, Trent Kay, Daniel Coletta, Matt Danskin, Daniel Niederberger, Josh Pereira, Todd Howarth and Josh Wilkins came into the side with Craig Simpson, Robert Sciascia, and Antonio Naglieri all rested, while David Onoforo, Greg Sharland, James Isaia and Dom de Felice dropped to the bench.

It was an even opening to the game, the visitors having plenty of possession, but it was Armadale who created the first chance on 16 minutes. Biss' through ball sent Kuppusamy clear, the Perth defenders were looking for an offside flag that never came, but the strikers shot from the edge of the box went inches past the post.

Armadale were closing down Perth well, giving them no time on the ball and were hitting on the counter attack and on 22 minutes Darlington's cross from the left found Joey Tavernese, whose curling shot was only inches over the bar.

But their early pressure was rewarded on 24 minutes with the lead. A long throw in by Tavernese was flicked on by Viaggio, the ball falling to Kuppusamy, who controlled the ball rounded Dunn and scored from close-range. It looked like he had used his arm to control the ball but the goal stood.

Perth's first opportunity didn't arrive until 36 minutes; Howarth's run took him past three defenders, before playing in Niederberger, whose low shot flashed inches past the post. It was the visitors on top as the half ended, and in stoppage time Danskin cut in from the right and his powerful shot was well saved by Cyril Sharrock.

At the break Perth Coach Gianfranco Circati made a double change, bringing on Onoforo and Sharland for Danskin and Niederberger and the change almost had an immediate impact, Sharland's shot on the turn four minutes in was saved low by Sharrock.

But it was the home side that doubled their lead on 52 minutes. Tavernese was sent clear and his cross from the right picked out Biss whose volley flew into the top corner of the net, despite Dunn getting a hand to it.

That goal woke Perth from their slumber and on 58 minutes they went close to reducing the lead. Wilkins' cross from the right found Kay, whose header was tipped around the post by Sharrock. From the resulting corner Oliveira's header crashed off the post and the rebound was scrambled away by the Armadale defence

With Perth pushing men forward they were caught out again on 66 minutes. A long clearance by Sharrock was flicked on by Darren Francis sending Kuppusamy in on goal. He rounded Dunn and was brought down and referee Tim Mihevc pointed straight to the penalty spot and booked the Perth custodian. Kuppusamy picked himself up and scored from the spot to give Armadale a 3-0 lead, sending the Armadale supporters into raptures.

Perth was staring at only their second defeat of the season, but they pulled one back two minutes later. A corner from the right was flicked on by Kay and Isaia fired home from eight-yards.

The home side should have regained their three goal lead seven minutes later, when they were awarded another penalty. Viaggio's header hit the arm of Kilkelly and the referee pointed straight to the spot, despite the Perth protests, which saw Onoforo and Oliveira receive yellow cards. Once the dust had settled Castrilli's spot kick was well saved by Dunn.

Armadale continued to battle with Viaggio and Mark McClements outstanding at the heart of the back four, and they went close again on 85 minutes. Pottier's inch perfect pass sent Tavernese in on goal, but his shot was saved low by Dunn. Things went from bad to worse for Perth when Coletta was given a straight red card in the last minute, but it was Armadale's day and they ran out 3-1 winners.

A vital win for the home side and Coach Lee Bamber was delighted with his sides' performance. "The game plan worked a treat , all the players did their job and we took our chances today, which we haven't been doing recently. We defended well and everyone worked their socks off and I think we deserved the points on the day," said Bamber.
