Army outgun NTC

Armadale are back on the winners list after they overcame the National Training Centre 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Alfred Skeet Reserve.

Joey Tavernese bagged himself a brace and Tom Biss got his name on the scoresheet in what was a comfortable victory for the home side.

In truth the score line could have much greater for Armadale as NTC had Rocco Pizzato sent off and Tom Biss missed a penalty midway through the second half they had too much firepower for the Training Centre in the end.

It was a tepid opening to the match with neither side creating many clear goal scoring chances as passing was sloppy and both teams gave the ball away too regularly.

Armadale though settled the quicker of the two sides and restricted NTC down to long range shots which failed to test Cyril Sharrock in goal.

Up the other end of the park a Darren Francis volley and Joey Tavernese's low effort which slid just wide of the post from were the most threatening efforts Armadale could muster in the opening exchanges.

Rav Kuppusamy then came closest to a goal on the half hour mark when his header came back off the crossbar before Pizzato cleared the ball away from danger as it bobbled close to the line.

Storm Roux finally tested Sharrock with another drive from distance which the keeper had to be alert for as he palmed the ball around the post.

Joey Tavernese wasted a golden opportunity for Armadale as he rushed at an opportunity and blazed wide his effort from a slight angle when he was in much more space than he realised.

Armadale were now in the ascendency but for all their toil it looked as though they were going to go into half time without a goal as more missed chances haunted their cause, Kuppusamy and Ambrogio guilty of wasteful finishing once again.

That goal though did arrive just before the break courtesy of a healthy slice of luck as Joey Tavernese beat two defenders before an attempted clearance cannoned off him and the ball sailed into the net.

NTC were a much better attacking outfit in the second half and they nearly caught out the Reds defence within the opening five minutes when Borbor Sambindi's cross to the back post fell to Slobodan Vulin but he blasted high over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

Lawrence Shuruma was having much more of an influence in the middle of the park now and his determined run and shot was courageously blocked by Mark McClements.

But Armadale withstood the challenge and were awarded a penalty on 60 minutes when referee Phil Traianedes saw some shirt pulling in the box by Shuruma and pointed to the spot.

Tom Biss confidently stepped up but sent the spot kick high into the sky which was a real let off for NTC.

They were not so fortunate though on 77 minutes as a great move started by man of the match Tavernese led to Armadale doubling their lead.

Using his strength to fend off his marker he released the electric Kuppusamy down the wing who crossed perfectly for Tom Biss to make amends for his earlier penalty miss as he planted a bullet header into the back of the net.

They were then awarded another penalty in the final ten minutes when a lunging mistimed tackle by Rocco Pizzato caught substitute Sean Nicholls in the box and as the last defender Phil Traianedes went to his pocket and sent the young defender for an early shower.

This time Tavernese stepped up to the spot but again failed to convert the spot kick. Goalkeeper Franken produced a wonderful diving save but unfortunately he couldn't hold the powerful shot as Tavernese mopped up and smashed home the rebound.

There was a late chance for NTC to get something out of the match which their second half performance warranted as Jordan Dodd broke free in the last minute but Cyril Sharrock was able to keep out his effort to preserve his side's clean sheet.
