Armadale secure vital first win

Armadale have broken through for their first win in the 2012 All Flags State Premier League after accounting for a disappointing Sorrento 2-0 in rainy conditions on Saturday afternoon.

Ravi Kuppusamy and Blake Adams were both on target in each half as Lee Bamber's troops won for the second time in a row after their midweek Anzac Day victory in the State Cup.

After scoring nine goals in that match they looked to strike early against the Gulls and after an early sighter Kuppusamy obliged on thirteen minutes.

Sorrento left gaping holes in their defence and the number 11 took full advantage to break through the middle and one on one from a tight angle slotted comfortably to send the Army fans into raptures.

They were thankful though for Cyril Sharrock's great point blank save at the other end minutes later from Johny Mirco's shot to keep the score at one nil.

Armadale were looking very dangerous on the break and they caught Sorrento out at the back once again but Kuppusamy and Joey Tavernese couldn't capitalise on separate occasions.

Kuppusamy was having a fantastic first half and he was very unlucky not to have his second goal after great work by Tavernese set him up inside the box but his shot rebounded back off the post.

Sorrento needed a lift and Jason Mirco's great surging run down the right nearly provided an equaliser but Johny Mirco flashed his volley wide before Jason Mirco had a ferocious drive from the edge of the box just clear the crossbar.

But their best chance fell for Brodie Martin who failed to connect with Jason Mirco's miskicked effort which fell to him directly in front of goal.

Both keepers were kept very busy throughout the game but Curtis Aspden came up with a brilliant double save on 53 minutes to deny a sure goal. First he saved Jason Pottier's good shot then he came up with a better save to deny Joey Tavernese one on one from the rebound.

But his goal was breached again a minute later when Blake Adams fired home Ravi Kuppusamy's lay off which gave Armadale a very handy lead.

Stuart Montgomery was then introduced off the bench for Sorrento for his debut after transferring from the Western Knights and his introduction nearly paid immediate dividends as his deft touch put fellow Knights defector Johny Mirco through, but his shot failed to hit the target or trouble Sharrock in goal.

He then had two good efforts himself minutes later but he couldn't make it a scoring debut as his curling effort flew narrowly wide then Mark McClements cleared his header off the line.

Time was running out for Sorrento as Paul Price threw all his substitutes into the game to find a way back but Brodie Martin then received his second yellow card which culminated in a red and Sorrento's day ended on a sour note.

Armadale hung on and at the final whistle fans and players alike breathed a sigh of relief as they secured their first points and first win of the season.

Lee Bamber was equally happy at getting his first Premier League victory as Armadale head coach.

"It's been coming to be honest. We have been training really well putting 45 minute performances together just not 90 minute performances so it was just good to do it for 90 minutes today," he said.

"The last two or three weeks our confidence has been good even though we lost to Bayswater 3-0 last week the performance was good but it just didn't quite work for us. The performances have been there, it's just about getting results."
