Bayswater surpass fledgling Armadale

Bayswater City SC outclassed a young Armadale side with a comfortable 3-0 win at Frank Drago Reserve on Saturday afternoon.

Bayswater luminary, Gustavo Marulanda scored all 3 for his side, assisted by his dependable team mates in Franscisco Jorquera, Jack Wilkinson, Gustavo Catarcione.

Armadale were persistent and brave in the face of adversity when Keeper Cyril Sharrock was sent off early in the 2nd half for dissent. Although Bayswater were clearly the superior side, Lee Bambers' men showed promise and determination for the full 90 minutes
The match was fairly uneventful in the first 20 minutes with Armadale defenders Mitch Castrill, Nick Viaggio and Sam Loveless applying heavy pressure and largely containing the lively Marulanda.

However, the momentum began to shift in Bayswater's favour as Armadale began to falter. Marulanda ran onto a ball delivered by Steven Turnbull from the opposite end, he turned and fired but bent it to the right of goal.

This began an onslaught from the Bayswater forwards. In the 28th minute, Marulanda carried the ball up front, taking on Viaggio and drawing the foul, resulting in a penalty which he converted with apparent ease into the right of net as Sharrock looked on in stunned disbelief.

Just two minutes later, he struck again. Jorquera carried the ball through the midfield with a clever pass through to Marulanda who demonstrated a text book run, carry, strike and score from a slightly tighter angle than his previous conversion.

Armadale were unable to respond in the same way despite the best efforts of Darren Francis and Tom Biss, with Bayswater's' Andy Reale and John Kearney forming a solid barrier in the backline keeping scoring opportunities for the visitors to a minimum.

Although they showed promise and determination, the Armadale side lacked innovation through the mid field and, on the occasion that they did break through, were unable to maintain possession and overcome their slick opponents.

The pressure only intensified for the visitors in the 2nd half, as Sharrock earned himself the attention of referee, Josh Mannella, who awarded the Keeper two yellow cards in the 53rd minute, sending him off the field for dissent.

Now the pressure was really on for Armadale as Bayswater sensed a massive opportunity to exploit their 10 man side. They surged forward almost immediately from this point, as Jorquera, Wilkinson, Catarcione and Paul McCarthy pushed forward into the 56th minute, forcing Armadale reserve goalie Jack Adams to bear the burden. Adams was excellent under the circumstances and, helped by Viaggio, did an admirable job of holding off the forthcoming unrelenting attacks from Jorquera and Larry Miller.

With Reale, Kearney and Turnbull forming a tight seal in the Bayswater back line, Armadale's first clear shot on goal came very late in the 75th minute when a ball was played through to Graeme O'Flaherty. With time and space on his side, O'Flaherty lacked composure and was unable to contribute for his side.

Marulanda put the nail in the coffin for the visitors in the 80th minute as he, again, got behind a ball delivered from Catarcione, this time beating Viaggio and Adams, sliding the ball past with ease to give Bayswater their third and final.

Bayswater coach, Mauro Marchione, said although his team won this game, they still had to work on their attitude and approach to each game.

"We started slowly today and we need to work on this, we need to be ready from the first minute of every game," he said.

"Now we need to focus on our next game, which is a crucial Cup game against Stirling. We have a few injuries in the side, so we need to assess and do a bit of reshuffling. We have tough week coming up but we are lucky to have some good depth in our reserve squad this year too."

He would not be drawn on speculation that star player Marulanda has been approached by numerous A-League teams.
