Melville snatch a draw with Armadale in Night Series

Division Two side Melville City came from a goal down to snatch a 2-2 draw with Armadale at Alfred Skeet Oval. Clayton Kendall scored the late equaliser to compliment Sasa Slavujevic’s opener and cancel out finishes by Mark McClements and David Caine.

"I thought we were a much improved side in the second half," Meville boss Danny Evans said. "You go 2-1 down with 15 minutes to go and you think it's going to be one of those days, but excellent performance from the guys to rally and come back. It was very pleasing to get a point, especially going a man down in the latter stages."

The flow of play was all one-way across the first half hour but Armadale time after time wasted opportunities in front of goal. Whether it was the upright, the crossbar or the safe hands of Melville custodian Stewart Dalgarno, things were just not going to plan for the Premier League outfit. Melville were threatening on the counter attack and in the 43rd minute the approach paid dividends with Slavujevic tapping in an exquisite long ball. Armadale finally woke up and McClements found an instant response to send the teams into the break at one-all. The second half followed much the same pattern of the first, Armadale again squandering several good goal scoring chances. The introduction of Alan Darlington gave them greater focus in the final third but it was through a Caine free-kick that the Reds edged in front after 74 minutes. However, their joy would be short-lived as Melville’s fighting spirit came to the fore with Kendall tapping in a well-flighted corner six minutes later. Melville survived the final few minutes a man down after Steve Arnold was given his marching orders for a second yellow card.
