The Wellington Warriors produced a first quarter blitz, kicking five unanswered goals to set up a sixty four-point victory over Ballarat on Saturday night under lights at Roesdale.
David Ross, Brett Morris and Ray Larsen led the way early as the Warriors claimed their first win with a 14.7 (91) to 4.3 (27) triumph.
The Warriors were dominant from the first bounce going forward on a number of occasions in the first quarter which resulted in goals from Des McKay, Nathan King and David Ross.
The solid Wellington back line structure of Marty Onley, Wayne McQuillen, Mark Stothers, Ben Treasure and Terry Flynn held Ballarat scoreless in the first term.
Desperate to stay in the match Ballarat came out firing but were stop in their tracks by a well trained Wellington side. Ballarat simply couldn't penetrate past the Warriors tall defenders of Ash Oldman and Marty Garoni. Morris continue to drive the ball forward for the home team and Nathan King and David Ross were proving to be too much for Ballarat's defence.
The Warriors led 8.4 to 1.0 at half-time but Ballarat dominated the opening stages of the third quarter, regularly pumping the ball into their forward 50 but failing to convert. It took a thumping kick from fullback to break open the Wellington defence and allowed Ballarat to slot through a much needed goal.
However, Ballarat's great start was short lived and the Warriors soon settled and gain control of the match once again. Paul Marsh, Mike Whitaker, Stephen McQuillen, Geoff Kinnish and Russell Hansford were all impressive during the term.
The final term finished as it started with Wellington dominating on all areas of the ground. Junk time goals to Col Knight, Kain Jackson, Mick McQuillen, Terry Flynn and Russell Hansford put the cream on a very successful win for the home team.
A big thanks must go to the Rosedale football club for providing a wonderful venue.
