The Calgary Kangaroos had an excellent year in 2013. In the Kangaroos' 11th year as a club they moved from strength to strength in terms of participation and the level of their competition.
The intra-club games between Calgary's two men's sides (Calgary Bears and Cowboys) ended with the Cowboys winning the cup after 8 games between April and September.
In June the annual Kelowna Cup was held in British Columbia with men's and women's teams from Calgary, Edmonton and the Vancouver area attending. Calgary had a strong showing in this tournament which is designed to showcase and develop Canadian players, with the Alberta combined Canadian side defeating the BC combined side in both Men's and Women's games.
In July Calgary hosted the Stampede Cup with teams from Edmonton attending. The Calgary Kangaroos (Calgary's representative side) defeated Edmonton to claim a successive Stampede Cup trophy.
Also held in July was the 49th Parallel Cup which saw a record number of Calgary players selected for the Northwind "A" and "B" sides and for the Northern Lights "Championship" and "Development" sides. All 4 teams demonstrated the continuing growing strength of the Canadian players, with Canada winning three of the four game.
The Calgary footy community has chosen the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation as their charity to support in 2013. Fundraisers included a run and a "charity calendar" which have raised approximately $3,500 to date.
In October the Kangaroos traveled to Austin, Texas to compete in division 1 of the US Nationals. Calgary powered its way into the final against the home town favorites, the Austin Crows, only to come up short by a point in a thrilling grand final which was witnessed by AFL dignitaries including Nick Riewoldt.
The Kangaroos look forward to building on 2013 in the upcoming season.
