TUMBY IN UPSET WIN OVER LEAGUE LEADERS
Tumby Bay upset Waybacks, the football critics, the premiership table and most people’s expectations, when they inflicted a four point defeat upon first round league leader Waybacks at the Tumby Bay oval in perfect conditions last Saturday.
For the first time the Double Blues realised the potential that their talented side contains. The match was a top class spectacle with both sides having some brilliant patches, but Tumby won because they were more direct, kicked the ball further and better and had a winner in front of goals in Foreman. It appeared that Waybacks seriously under-estimated the Blues who put the Demon defence under serious pressure from the outset with Steve Higgins goaling twice, Foreman and Dunn before the flat legged Demons knew what had hit them. The Demons fought back late in the first term to lead by 7-points at the first change and increased this lead to 21 at the main break. There was little between the two teams in the second half but it was the Blues who kicked 3 late goals in the final term to clinch a hard fought win. Tumby had plenty of good players, Wigley mainly in defence, Dunn their inspiration, Foreman in front of goals, Horgan, Bell – a good find, Kotz and Chappell were some of them.

REVENGE FOR THE BLUES AT TUMBY BAY
Tumby Bay had its revenge at home on Saturday when the Double Blues defeated the red and whites by percentage boosting 50 points.
Tasmans made full use of the wind advantage in the first quarter kicking six goals for the term. The start of the second term saw Dunn at centre for the Blues picking up a number of kicks as he tried to get his side moving. Two quick goals from the boot of Gus Wenzel playing his first full game. Further goals to Foreman, Higgins, Dunn twice and Wenzel again for his third gave the Blues a commanding 26-point lead at half time after kicking ten goals for the quarter. The second half was all the Blues as they ran out winners by 50 points.

VASTLY IMPROVED BLUES SHOCK THE EAGLES
Tumby Bay, in the doldrums in recent weeks, made a dramatic return to form when they comfortably defeated Lincoln South in a hard fought, vigorous match at Tumby Bay last Saturday.
The Blues following a series of unimpressive efforts turned in a vastly improved performance to topple the Eagles. Early in the game Tumby’s strong goal-to-goal line loomed as a danger to the Eagles, especially Dunn in the centre, France at centre half-back and Williams at the goal front. The Blues opened up a commanding lead mid way through the second term before Souths pegged them back with late goals to only trail by one straight kick at the long interval. With good players in Roger Dunn, Bob Wigley, Barry France and Ken Berryman the Blues were able to keep the Eagles at arm’s length in the second half and go onto record an important 16-point victory.

DEMONS HAD A FIT OF THE ‘BLUES’
Tumby Bay were first to the ball continuously, backed each other up in splendid fashion and had many more players than Waybacks that showed determination to win the ball.
France, Chappell, Wigley, Curtis and Challinger were all winners in defence for the Blues with Chapman winning the rucks and marking around the ground. In attack the Double Blues had great service from John Williams and Graeme Foreman with a total of seven goals between the pair.

TUMBY BAY CRUSH TASMANS
A far more even and methodical Tumby Bay had no trouble in completely over-running a disjointed Tasman team on the Centenary Oval on Saturday.
Tumby was lead onto the field by Eric Kotz, playing his last game for the Blues before transferring to Fremantle WA. The Blues started slowly but were able at least to go into quarter time with a slender lead over the Roosters. In the second quarter the Blues run rampant with John Williams in deadly form at full forward and a dominant centre line they kicked nine un-answered goals. I the second half, with the game in their keeping the Blues continued to play well with strong contributions from all its players. Roger Dunn played four quarters of powerful football and was probably Tumby’s best. Ned Roberts would not have been far behind him in his role as a follower resting in the back lines. Other good players included, Chappell, France, Wigley, Challinger, Bell, Lodge and Wenzel.

TUMBY STORM HOME AGAINST TASMANS
Kicking 4 goals in the time-on period and a total of six goals in the last quarter Tumby Bay, after trailing for most of the day stormed home to snatch an exciting victory against Tasmans at the Tumby Bay Oval on Saturday.
The Roosters appeared to have the game in their keeping midway through the last term but suddenly the game erupted ito a violent free-for-all with players from all parts of the ground converging on what appeared to be Roger Dunn versus the Rooster rucks. Dunn emerged with blood streaming from a head wound when the umpires were finally able to get play under way again. The physical violence appeared to stir the home side into action and together with four or five positional changes by their coach they suddenly took control and slammed on goals through Higgins, Williams and Horgan.

BLUES MILES TOO GOOD AT TUMBY
In a match marred in the first half by wild, blustery conditions, Tumby Bay broke away in the last two quarters to register a resounding 58 point win against Marble Range at Tumby Bay in the season’s opening game last Saturday.
The Double Blues played superb football in the third term kicking 7-6 to the Magpies 1-3 to set up the win. New rover Greg Thiele who had played well loose in defence kicked three second half goals to be well up in the best players for the Blues along with Gus Wenzel on a wing who provided great drive and used his kicks well. Newly appointed captain Danny Horgan was also a productive rover and Cliff Carpenter played with great dash in the centre of the ground.

EAGLES GLIDE IN AT TUMBY BAY
The Eagles coasted to an easy win after a whirlwind second quarter at Tumby Bay last Saturday against spirited opposition during which they racked up 10 goals 6 behinds for the term to only one goal from the Double Blues.
The Tumby Bay oval was in superb condition for the match and the weather was also kind. Each side had seven scoring shots in the first quarter, but the Eagles made better use of their opportunities.

TUMBY BAY RUCKS IN STRONG DISPLAY
Ruck supremacy and straighter kicking for goal enabled Tumby Bay to open the football season with a 12-point victory over Bostons at Ravendale Oval on Saturday.
Poor goal shooting and good defence by Tumby Bay held Bostons to 4-4 for the quarter, while the Blues kicking into a gusty breeze failed to score. Tumby Bay captain Danny Horgan led a strong charge in the second term when he kicked three of his side’s five goals to see scores all tied-up at the long break. A match winning third term from the Blues where they held the Tigers goalless and completely dominated the ruck duels with Carr and Woolford giving their small men in Horgan, Thiele and Stringer first use of the ball. The Double Blues held sway in the final term to record a two goal win.

TWO IN A ROW FOR TENACIOUS TUMBY
A tenacious Tumby side notched up their second football victory in two games when they defeated Tasmans by 14 points at Tumby Bay on Saturday.
Carpenter was prominent early and along with Carr in ruck and Chapman at centre half-forward were telling against Tasmans early. Tumby led by nineteen points at the first change and thanks to late goals by Oswald and the dangerous Thiele, the Double Blues held sway by 8 points at the main break.
In the third quarter Chapman was proving too strong for the opposing Red and Whites and his long accurate kicking was an object lesson to all aspiring ‘Aussie Rulers’. Tumby got out to a five goal lead during the last term until a late Rooster revival saw the margin reduced to only 2-points before Wenzel put the game beyond doubt with an excellent goal in the dying minutes, to see the home side run out winners by 14 points.

BLUES THIRD TERM DID THE TRICK
Tumby Bay’s third quarter when they booted six goals without a reply from Waybacks gave the Demons a bad case of the Blues and enabled the visitors to run out comfortable victors in their clash at Centenary oval on Saturday.
For three quarters there was little between the two sides but the third quarter swung the game the Blues way. Best for Tumby were rovers Thiele and Horgan, Anderson on the half forward flank, Stringer on a wing and Carr in the ruck.

ANOTHER CLOSE ONE FOR LINCOLN SOUTH
Lincoln South defeated Tumby Bay by 4 points in the football match at Centenary oval on Saturday. For the second time in two encounters this season the Eagles won by less than a goal in a close encounter in which the Blues led for most of the match.
For Tumby Bay Vern Challinger was a clear winner at centre half-back. The Eagles moved several players on him but he continuously drove the ball out of defence. Roberts on a half back flank also defended well, while Anderson at half forward and later centre won many possessions. Lodge took many marks while resting in defence. Carpenter and Horgan also did well.

SPIRIT WON IT FOR TIGERS
There was little in ability between Bostons and Tumby Bay for three quarters at Centenary Oval on Anzac day but the Tigers showed far more of the Anzac spirit than the disinterested Blues in the last quarter to kick 8 goals 7 behinds to nothing and win easily by 60 points.
Greg Thiele was a fine example to the Tumby players but his efforts were unrewarded while Hartree at centre and Southern with a solid game at half back were easily Tumby’s best.

WAYBACKS WIN DULL ENCOUNTER
Before a small crowd at Centenary Oval last Saturday, Waybacks easily defeated bottom team Tumby Bay, 20-21, to 5-4.
Tumby opened well and had two majors on the board in the first 10 minutes and led by 2-points at the first change but in the second quarter it was all the Redlegs with Des Pedler playing a lone hand in defence, repelling many attacks. The second half saw Waybacks kick right away, increasing their lead as the game progressed before eventually running out convincing winners by 107-points in a one sided contest. Greg Thiele and Pedler were easily the Blues best and Gary Carr tried hard.

HOORAY FOR THE GOOD OLD BLUES
Most football followers – with the exception of Bostons would be pleased that Tumby Bay broke their duck at last, at the Tigers expense. At least the season has not been a total waste for them and they can now look forward to the remainder of the season.
Tumby’s victory must have been a tonic for them and they might realise that they are capable of winning matches even if the realisation has come too late for this season. Last week for the first time a number of Tumby players provided the sort of impetus they should have provided all along. Wenzel, Higgins, Roberts, Southern and Clark lent support to their consistently good players in Thiele, Hartree, Pedler, Cottrell and Carr and they surprised everyone including probably themselves.

TASMANS VICTORIOUS BUT UNIMPRESSIVE
Tasmans were unimpressive in their win last Saturday when they defeated Tumby Bay by 35 points on the Centenary Oval.
The first quarter belonged to Tumby Bay and with the aid of a strong breeze they jumped straight into stride with goals from Carthew and Harris. Steve Higgins was creating opportunities at centre half-forward as he added a couple of goals himself to see the Blues lead 5-7 to 1-1 at quarter time. At the main break Tumby still led the Roosters by 6-points but after half time Tasmans restricted the Blues scoring with the breeze and rammed home the advantage in the last term when they had use of it. The Roosters comfortably winning 13-19 to Tumby Bay 8-14. Tumby were best served by their two key forwards in Higgins and Harris, while Hartree and Garret played well along with Wenzel and Thiele.

RANGERS IN CONTROL AGAINST TUMBY
Playing on their home ground for the last time this season, Marble Range finished full of running to defeat Tumby Bay by 15 goals.
Best players for Tumby Bay were Greg Thiele with a lion hearted roving effort over the full four quarters. Higgins at half forward was the most dangerous player in attack and showed class and initiative while Carpenter would undoubtedly have been more troublesome if he had more room to move about. Hartree’s battle on the wing against his Marble Range opponent was a show piece and Pedler upheld many Magpie attacks. Carr and Cottrell were more than use full ruckmen for their team.

MARBLE RANGE SWAMP TUMBY
Marble Range attacked consistently for three quarters to defeat Tumby Bay by 120 points at Wangary on Saturday.
Tumby Bay still unfortunately were without Carr and Richardson made a couple of interesting changes with Pedler moving out from full back to centre half back and Steve Higgins who is more familiar to the Rangers as a forward took up the full back position. The move of Higgins to full back was a good one as he was named Tumby Bay’s best player. Kroemer on a wing was good all day and the Harris twins Mark and Shane were serviceable players in attack.

POWER DISPLAY BY MINOR PREMIERS
Despite wild rumours which circulated the town last week regarding Tasmans postion on the ladder, they brushed aside Tumby Bay in the last three quarters at Stamford on Saturday to record another big win and well and truly take out the minor premiership.
The Roosters did not have it all their way in the first quarter as Tumby took the game right up to them, using plenty of run, backing up and handball. Tumby even held the lead at stages during the first term but Tasmans come back well late in the term. Best players for the Blues were hard to find except for Pedler at full back who was outstanding and Pearson and Tierney did more than their share.

Tasmans began the 1977 football season in fine style against Tumby Bay at Tumby Bay on Saturday kicking eleven goals in the opening term.
The Roosters dominated play in the first half before Tumby stemmed the flow of goals in the second half kicking four goals themselves to at least add some respectability to the scoreboard.

TUMBY PRESSURE TASMANS ALL DAY
Tumby Bay pressured Tasmans throughout the game at Centenary Oval on Saturday.
In the first quarter Tumby aided by a cross breeze took the game right up to Tasmans and at the first change led by 12-points. Carr and Oswald were rucking strongly for Tumby ably supported by Pearson and Shane Harris. At half time the Roosters led by only 3-points after an even first half of football. Three quick goals to the Red and Whites early in the third term were quickly replied to by Shane Harris who was playing great football up forward. At three quarter time the Roosters held a 4 goal advantage and with the breeze at their backs in the last quarter never looked troubled. Bill Oswald who had rucked well all day flashed into the game with three quick goals and Tumby were still in it, but four quick goals to Tasmans finally sealed the fate of the Double Blues. Shane Harris with six goals was outstanding for Tumby while Carr and Oswald in ruck and Rod Pearson gave some good service.

TASMANS STORM HOME AT TUMBY
After trailing for most of the game Tasmans drew away from Tumby Bay in the last quarter to win by 36 points at Tumby Bay on Saturday.
Blustery conditions prevailed as Tumby won the toss and kicked with a four to five goal breeze. Shane Lockwood kicked three opening term goals to help Tumby to an 8-point advantage at the first break. At half time scores were all tied-up with Tasmans wasting many scoring opportunities. With the wind dropping in the second half it was goal for goal in an even third term but Tumby had no answer to the rampant Roosters in the last quarter as they piled on nine goals to two in a blistering final term to run out easy winners 17-17 to 12-11

WAYBACKS WIN AFTER CLOSE FIRST HALF
In a match in which scores remained close in the first half, Waybacks easily defeated Tumby Bay at Tumby on Saturday in Port Lincoln football.
Tumby won the toss and kicked with the aid of a slight breeze in the first term. Steve Higgins was proving a target up forward for the Double Blues as he kicked his team’s only two goals for the quarter as Waybacks held sway by 23 points at the first change. Tumby’s small men got on top in the second quarter and against the breeze they outscored the Demons 5-1 to 5.0 and were right in the match. After half-time the Wayback machine began to click into gear and Tumby had no answer to their second half dominance with the Demons eventually running out winners by 70 points.

TUMBY UNABLE TO SOLVE PROBLEMS AGAINST RANGERS
Tumby were first to have the use of a four goal wind favouring the southern end, but immediately ran into the problems which they were unable to solve in their match against Marble Range on Saturday.
Tumby won the toss and kicked with the aid of a slight breeze in the first term but were unable to take full advantage and by half-time the Rangers had set-up a match winning lead of 54-points. A margin that continued to grow as the match progressed with the Magpies eventually running out winners by 95 points. Mark Milton held his half back flank well to be their only clear winner. Brenton Lamshed showed his class for the Double Blues but requires greater assistance from his team mates. Gary Carr in ruck tried hard and rovers Mooney and Kroemer battled hard and were by no means disgraced.

STRONG DISPLAY BY BOSTONS AT TUMBY
Bostons gave a powerful display to run out winners by 82 points against the home side at Tumby Bay last Saturday.
Conditions were near perfect as the game opened with Bostons attacking the southern end. Before either team had scored Boston’s full forward Ray Watherston on the lead accidently crashed with umpire Warren Dickie who had to be carried from the ground. Mooney scored first for Tumby, but Bostons soon replied and by quarters end held a 23-point advantage. Tumby Bay players Tierney, Mooney, Harris and Fisher tried hard in this quarter but could not stem the tide. In the second term the Double Blues scored goals through Eckermann and Mooney but still trailed by 51-points at the main break. Bostons continued to attack in the second half increasing their lead at three quarter time to 53-points before completely demoralising the Tumby team in the final quarter to run out eventual winners 23-14 to 10-10

STRONG FINISH BY SOUTH AT TUMBY
Lincoln South ran riot in the second half on Saturday to win easily against Tumby Bay whose hopes were dashed by a mounting toll of injuries.
Gary Carr scored first for the Blues after Brenton Lamshed from the centre bounce found him in space. Lamshed kicked one himself minutes later, but it was Souths who finished the quarter stronger to lead by 5-points. Mark Harris scored the first goal of the second term to put the Blues back in front and despite another goal from Steve Anderson later in the term it was the Eagles with a commanding 25-point lead at the half-time interval. Tumby Bay sustained several injuries during the first half including Lamshed with a lower leg injury and Mooney with a dislocated shoulder. Lamshed was at least able to continue playing in the second half, kicking three goals and being named high amongst the best players. Tumby however could not stop the Eagles from running away with the game as they added 9-6 to 3-3 after half time to run out comfortable winners by 66-points.

TASMANS IN FLYING START AT TUMBY
At Tumby Bay on ANZAC Day Tasmans defeated the Blues by 19 points due to a great first quarter when they outscored their opponents by eight goals.
Tasmans slammed on nine goals to just the one by Tumby kicked by Phil Shannon. The Blues were much more attacking in the second quarter with new recruit Peter Burton kicking four goals for the term to see the scoreboard read 11-6 to 6-6 at the main break. The third term was a very even affair with only one goal apiece. There was little scoring in the last term as well as both teams tired. Best players for the Blues were Carr in ruck, rover Shannon was speedy and effective, Kroemer showed courage and persistence on his wing, Burton although over-shadowed in the second half must rate a mention for his four goals and skipper Brenton Lamshed came under notice at times.

EAGLES TROUNCE DOUBLE BLUES
Lincoln South tore strips off the weakened Double Blues at Centenary Oval on Sunday when they kicked 11 goals in the third term and went on to win by 90 points.
Bill Oswald scored first for the Blues and Steve Higgins followed this up with two more for the quarter to trail by just seven-points after the Eagles had first use of slight breeze. Second quarter goals to Tony Higgins, Kroemer, Anderson and Shannon saw the Blues stay in touch at half-time however a third quarter blitz by Souths ended the game as a contest and the Eagles went on to record a 90-point win. Lamshed at center-half forward was brilliant all day, Gary Carr rucked strongly and pulled down some good marks, Scott in defence did many good things, Sorrell in ruck and at centre half forward battled hard all day and Dale Murphy along with Gavin Dunn were triers in a struggling team.

RANGERS HOME IN TIME-ON PERIOD
At Tumby on Saturday, Marble Range were fortunate to continue their unbeaten run when they defeated the home side by the narrow margin of five points.
The game, played in blustery conditions was a tight affair for the first three quarters. A shower of rain in the final term made ball handling difficult and both teams were held scoreless until the time-on period when with three minutes left Daniel Anderson goaled to give Tumby a one point lead. From the bounce Rangers drove the ball forward where a Tumby Bay player was free kicked, however he turned the ball over and the Magpies received a free kick that resulted in a goal with only a minute left on the clock and Marble Range hung-on to win the game 7-12 to Tumby 7-7

BOSTONS HANG ON IN THRILLER
After being down 34 points half way through the final quarter, Tumby staged a remarkable comeback to get within eight points of Bostons at the final siren.
Conditions were near perfect as the game opened with Bostons kicking with the aid of a two to three goal breeze. In an even first half Tumby used the wind to greater effect to lead at half time by 10-points with Carr, Shannon and Lamshed on ball and Scott and Southern in defence all playing well for the Double Blues. Bostons blew the game wide open in the second half and led by as many as 34-points deep into the last term before Tumby staged a fighting comeback with goals to King (2) Dunn and Lockwood to trail by only 8 points. Tumby went forward again and Sorrel took a strong mark just as the siren sounded. His shot for goal fell just short and Bostons escaped with the win.

CONVINCING WIN TO WAYBACKS
In a game that at no stage reached great heights, Waybacks convincingly defeated Tumby Bay at the latter’s home ground.
Waybacks were too big, too strong and too powerful. Best players for the Blues were Carr and Sorrell and these two must be developing into one of the top ruck combinations in the league. Scott at full back had another great game, Southern on his half back flank was strong in defence. Kroemer, despite his lack of size, always seems to play a courageous game and skipper Brenton Lamshed at centre initiated many attacks.
Waybacks 7.4 10.6 16.10 20.15 (135)

TASMANS ON TARGET AGAINST TUMBY
Tasmans handed out a lesson in goal kicking accuracy when they scored 19 majors from 23 shots to run out winners by 54-points against Tumby Bay on Saturday.
In perfect football weather Lamshed won the toss and kicked with the use of a slight breeze. Against the breeze Tasmans led by 15-points at quarter time. The Roosters kicked the first goal of the second term and Tumby could only reply with a string of behinds before Steve Higgins managed to goal from a long kick. At half time Tasmans had stretched their lead to 31-points thanks largely to their straight kicking with 10 goals from eleven shots. After half time the Roosters produced much more of the same and ran out comfortable winners 19.4 to Tumby Bay 9.10

BLUES TROUNCE EAGLES TO OPEN THEIR ACCOUNT
Bottom team Tumby Bay opened their winning account for the season with a great win over fourth placed team Lincoln at Tumby Bay Oval on Saturday.
Gary Carr scored first for the Blues and Steve Higgins followed with Tumby having most of the play. A string of behinds followed before Carr scored his second for the quarter and Oswald kicked truly just on the quarter time siren to see the Blues skip out to a 26-point lead at the first change. The Eagles through Miller who was well held by Kroemer managed to get loose to score his team’s first goal but at half time it was still the home side by 16-points. The Double Blues played their best football in the third term with Steve Higgins dominating on his flank and kicking four goals for the quarter to see his side in a commanding position at the last change leading 12-10 to Lincoln South 4-8. Early goals to Kroemer and Sorrell in the last term put the game beyond doubt and Tumby went on to win by 41-points. In a side in which every player contributed, Kroemer on his wing was instrumental in setting up several of Tumby’s goals. Carr in ruck and around the ground played another outstanding game, Lamshed was a consistent playmaker, Sorrell was likewise in ruck, Higgins was outstanding with five goals and backmen Southern and Scott overshadowed their opponents all day.

BOSTONS FINISH TOO STRONGLY FOR TUMBY
Bostons continued their winning run when they had a 29-point win over the Blues at Tumby Bay on Saturday.
The Tigers had first use of a strong south-westerly that made conditions difficult for the players. Bostons made good use of the breeze and had a 33-point advantage at the first change. Tumby did all the attacking in the second term and with two goals a-piece to their ruckmen Sorrell and Carr and another from Shannon the Blues fought back to hit the lead at half-time by 2 points. Unfortunately for the home side they could not find the same form in the second half and the Tigers proved far too strong to win 10-14 to Tumby 6-9.

MARBLE RANGE CRUSH TUMBY
The Sunday game at Wangary between Tumby Bay and Marble Range turned out to be a very one-sided affair, as the home side dominated all over the ground.
The Magpies were on top from the very outset and had winners all over the ground. The game never seemed in doubt after half time as the Rangers piled on the goals in a dominant display of team football to completely outclass the Double Blues.

TASMANS BEAT DOUBLE BLUES
Tasmans ran out winners by six goals last Saturday when they were at home to Tumby Bay in the last minor round game on Centenary Oval.
In perfect football weather Lamshed won the toss and kicked with the use of a four goal. Tumby were finding the going tough but were at least able to score a goal through Steve Higgins and although they failed to use the wind to its fullest extent they did lead the Roosters by 10-points at the first change. The lead was short lived however with Tasmans dominating the second term to lead by 27-points at the long break. Tumby were outscored 3-3 to 3-2 with the aid of the breeze in the third term and in the last quarter it was a battle of defences as both teams appeared to tire in the heavy conditions, as the Red and Whites ran out comfortable winners 12.11 to Tumby Bay 6.11
