BLUES DEFEAT SOUTHS IN FIRST QUARTER
Tumby Bay, the new team in the Port Lincoln Football League, soundly defeated Lincoln South in their first game for the season on Centenary Oval last Saturday.
Tumby Bay cut loose from the opening bounce and were 10.6 ahead after the first quarter. With Young and Dunn opening up the play with fast skilful handball, and the Tumby team backing up at every opportunity. In the first term Tumby piled on 10-7 to the Eagles solitary point. This was mainly due to a brilliant exhibition of roving from Roger Dunn, who appeared to be everywhere. There is always a lot of ifs and buts in these first games, but you must give credit where credit is due and Tumby Bay deserves full marks for its brilliant debut in the Port Lincoln Football League.

TUMBY BAY PROVE TOO SPEEDY FOR DEMONS
Tumby Bay outlasted Waybacks to pile on 36 points in the final quarter to double the Demons score in the match at Tumby Bay. This was the second win for the season for the Blues in as many matches. This game was looked on by most people. Many thought the steadiness of Waybacks would be too much for the Blues. It was also thought that the Demons would perform much better than they did although they were playing on Tumby’s home ground. Peter Carr, rucking was in the game all day and must rank high in Tumby’s best player list. Roger Dunn again roved brilliantly and always looked to drive his team forward and David Houston was as solid as a rock in defence.

TASMANS SNATCH VICTORY ON THE SIREN
Saturday’s thriller on Centenary oval between last year’s two premier teams Tumby Bay and Tasmans, was won on the final siren from a hurried kick off the ground. The big crowd that must have been a near record for a minor round game, was kept on the edge of their seats from the very first bounce in a fast, hard match between two good teams.

TUMBY BAY WIN HARD FOUGHT MATCH
The large crowd that braved the very cold weather and made the trip to Tumby Bay last week, certainly got value for their money. These two teams when they clash certainly draw large crowds and Saturday was no exception.
Tumby Bay always seemed to be handling the bigger oval better than the visitors, but the red and whites were able to stay close enough until Tumby in a brilliant last four minute burst got up to win in a drawn out last quarter. Roger Dunn and Doug Young were two of Tumby Bay’s very best players.

TUMBY BAY IN MIGHTY FORM
Tumby Bay regained their confidence against Marble Range in a fast, high scoring game at Wangary last Saturday
The match commenced with Marble Range having first use of a gentle breeze. Tumby were first away however scoring smartly through Henricksen. Young at centre half-forward started creating many opportunities for the Blues with good handball and play on football. Both O’Connell and Henricksen were a constant threat for the Blues up forward and together they booted thirteen goals. Moore and Houston were good defenders and Doug Young continued his excellent form.

TUMBY BAY TOO FAST FOR EAGLES IN SEMI-FINAL
Tumby Bay and Lincoln South staged a real thriller at Centenary Oval in the first semi-final of the Port Lincoln Football League on Saturday in front of a good crowd.
The Eagles made a great recovery after half time but failed by 18 points as Tumby controlled the last quarter. Doug Young’s game at half forward was terrific. Young combines brilliant high marking with dashing play on football, leaving his opponents for dead. Kevin Moore at centre half-back was nearly as effective as Young, with strong marking and rebounding a feature of his game. Roger Dunn was his team’s inspiration. Coming back from a serious knee injury, Dunn played a great captain’s game.

DOUG YOUNG WINS MAIL MEDAL
Tumby Bay’s Doug Young has won the mail medal for the fairest and most brilliant player in the Port Lincoln Football League for season 1962. The Double Blues centre half-forward has had a magnificent season and was a derserved winner of the award.
CAN TUMBY BAY TOPPLE THE DEMONS
This week sees the elimination preliminary final on Centenary Oval. The game should draw a very large crowd that may exceed last Saturday’s record attendance for a first semi-final of 2,500. Both the Double Blues and the Demons are very anxious for a win.
Although Waybacks finished the minor round in top place they are by no means sure of themselves in this week’s game. With Dunn and Berryman full of guile and courage and Mail Medal winner Young in top form the Blues look to have an advantage across centre and in the forward lines. And it’s this area where the likes of O’Connell, Henricksen and Young will enable Tumby to get home by a small margin.

WAYBACKS SHOW FIGHTING SPIRIT TO WIN
Tumby Bay have been eliminated by the Demons in one of the roughest games of the season. After holding Tumby to 1-5 in the third term, Waybacks unleashed a scintillating final ten minutes in the last quarter to add 6 goals 1 behind and get up from a seemingly impossible position to win by 7 points in front of another record crowd.
Fights instead of football were the order of the day. At one stage in the second quarter about 20 players were involved in an all in brawl with the central umpire appearing to lose control of the match.
Favoured by a strong breeze in the first term it was all the Blues with Ken Berryman dominating centre and giving his forwards plenty of opportunity. Doug Young was out of touch however and it was left to the rovers to do the bulk of the scoring. Dunn quickly had two goals on the board and at quarter time the Blues held a handy 29-point advantage. Waybacks responded in the second term that was dominated by punch-ups, which appeared to lift the Redlegs and at half time the margin was back to 15-points. The Demons set-up their victory in the third term when they restricted the Blues to just 1-5 but the Tumby side were still leading by 26-points at the last change. Three missed chances by the Double Blues early in the last quarter could have sealed the game but it was not to be and Waybacks kicked six unanswered goals from this point on to record an amazing come from behind win. Ken Berryman was the outstanding player on the ground. Ken has tons of courage and can kick either leg.
Roger Dunn who contributed three of Tumby’s six goals played his usual game to be high among the Blues best with good defenders Kevin Moore and David Houston doing their best for their team.
The Double Blues have performed excellently in this its first season in the Port Lincoln Football League. The club officials and players have proved their worth and they look upon this season as a measuring stick for future years. The Port Lincoln Football League has been pleased to have this club, and many friendships have been made between club mates of kindred clubs. Doug Young won the Mail Medal for his club and David Houston has done an excellent job in coaching the senior colts from a 20-goal push over team early in the season to a serious threat in this year’s colts finals. Roger Dunn has courageously captain-coached his side and David Wibberley has proved to be a very capable president. Last but not least, playing secretary, Kevin Moore has proved to be a grand asset to the Port Lincoln Football League in organising the games played at Tumby Bay.

BIG CROWD SEES EAGLES DOWN TUMBY
Fine weather and the attraction of four games drew a good crowd to Tumby Bay Oval last Saturday to see the Eagles scoop the pool in all four grades against the Blues.
Tumby Bay could not take full advantage of the breeze in the first quarter and were forced to play catch up football for the remainder of the day against the fast finishing Lincoln South side.

A large and tense crowd waited in an overcast but breathless afternoon for the commencement of the A Grade match between Tumby Bay and Eyre United last Saturday at the Tumby Bay Oval.

TUMBY BAY DEFEAT THE DEMONS BY A POINT
In one of the most exciting finishes for the season, the much under-rated Tumby Bay team gave League leaders, Waybacks their first defeat at Tumby Bay last Saturday.

TUMBY BAY THE GIANT KILLERS DO IT AGAIN
Once again the Double Blues who are fifth on the premiership ladder, downed the Roosters, who are second on the ladder and the fight for the final four is on in earnest.
The game as a spectacle was a very poor one indeed, however the Double Blues thoroughly deserved their victory in the strong blustery, dry conditions. Last quarter goals to Peter Carr and Ken Berryman was enough to seal victory in a see-sawing match with neither team able to dominate the other.

LAST YEAR’S PREMIERS THRASHED BY TUMBY
Tumby Bay staked their claims to this year’s premiership, with a devastating win over last year’s premiers, Waybacks at Tumby Bay on Saturday.
Winning in most positions on the field, the Double Blues never let the Demons get settled and with winning rucks and a forward line that functioned like clockwork, they cut the visitors defence to ribbons. Waybacks had no answer for Tumby’s half forward line in Baum, Houston and Murphy. Young at full forward was playing strongly and kicked three first quarter goals to see the Double Blues lead by 47-points at the first change. Apart from the second quarter when the Wayback side had use of the breeze the game was completely dominated by Tumby who had many good players all over the ground. Doug Young with his seven goals was strong all day, Swaffer in ruck won his position well and rovers Ken Berryman and Lloyd Bennetts were in everything at ground level.

TUMBY BLUES TOO SPEEDY FOR MAGPIES
The Tumby Bay Double Blues, contrary to expectation, played fast flowing football to stop the confident winning run of Marble Range at Wangary last week.

TASMANS SHOCKED BY BLUES DETERMINATION
After being well in the game at half time after a slow start, Tumby Bay with accurate kicking, gradually drew away from a bewildered Tasman side at Tumby Bay.
Tumby Bay won the toss and kicked with the aid of a slight breeze in front of one of the largest crowds ever seen at the Tumby Bay oval. Lyall Swaffer dominated the rucks and gave plenty of supply to the Berryman brothers Ken and Doug. Dean Dunn was a good defender all day and Lowe was good aswell.

TUMBY BAY ANNIHILATE DEMONS
Playing the best football seen this season, the strong Tumby Bay side won by 66 points running away from Waybacks at Tumby Bay on Saturday.
This victory takes them two points clear of Tasmans on the premiership table and the Blues are enjoying this luxury at the head of the table so early in the season. With a forward line that was on top all day and with Young in devastating form at the goal front. The feature of this win was perhaps the drive the Blues got from Swaffer, Berryman and Young, Swaffer and Berryman dominated the rucks all day and the tigerish roving of Berryman cut holes in the Demon defence and provided an armchair ride for Doug Young’s seven goals. Don’t think that Young was spoon fed though. Some of his leading and marking was phenomenal and his long shots for goal were atreat to watch.

TUMBY BAY BREAK RUN OF LOSSES
Tumby Bay broke through last week to end their run of losses at the expense of a very confident Marble Range side to win by 24 points at Wangary on Saturday.
The day was again very windy and made conditions for good football almost impossible. Marble Range won the toss and elected to kick with the aid of a very strong breeze, however they found the Blues defenders in Berryman, Houston and Challinger very hard to penetrate and it was the Blues who held sway at quarter time by the smallest of margins. It was a similar story in the second quarter with the Marble Range defenders this time stopping the Blues from scoring and scores were all tied up at the long break. The Double Blues set up their victory in the third quarter restricting the Magpies to just one point while kicking 2 goals 3 behinds into the breeze. TUMBY BAY DOWN LEAGUE LEADERS
Tumby Bay, in unexpectedly defeating the Eagles, who were in top position on the premiership ladder, have served notice to other clubs that they will be the team to beat before this year’s finals are decided.
The Double Blues side was strengthened with the return of Lyall Swaffer and he was instrumental in his side’s first quarter dominance and a 10-point lead. Tumby Bay were playing brilliant football with Lincoln South unable to match them in the air. At half time the Blues led the Eagles by only 13 points but were clearly playing the better brand of football. Lincoln South had their chances in the second half to challenge Tumby, but they were very inaccurate, kicking just one goals from eleven shots at goal. David Houston at fullback played a grand game for the Blues as did his fellow defenders Denis Chappell and Doug Berryman, while Swaffer kicked four goals while resting in the forward lines.

SEMI-FINAL TO DEMONS
Waybacks have proved they have developed a formidable team with plenty of strength in every position by defeating Tumby Bay in a hard fought semi-final at Centenary Oval.
The game was closely contested through-out with the Demons only racing away in the final few minutes. The Double Blues were the better side in the first quarter kicking four goals to Waybacks one, to lead by eighteen points at the first change. The demons hit back in the second term keeping Tumby goalless and kicking a couple themselves to reduce the half time margin to just five points. Waybacks began to gain the ascendancy from a tiring Blues team in the second half, but it wasn’t until the dying minutes of the game they were able to shrug off a dogged Tumby Bay side.

TUMBY SUFFER INJURIES IN FINAL GAME
In the first-semi final – the knock out final - Tumby Bay suffered a severe setback to three of its star players in the second half of the game against Waybacks.
Eldon Lawrie suffered a hairline fracture of the skull when he crashed over a pack of players and his head landed on the cricket pitch. Doug Young suffered a severe leg injury when he twisted after being hit when several players crowded in on the ball in a pack. Doug Murphy suffered a damaged jaw that necessitated medical treatment after the game. This was an unfortunate end to the season for the Double Blues, but reports state that all three players are well on the road to recovery.

DOUBLE BLUES FORWARDS ON TARGET
Tumby Bay with a more positive approach, more speed and better team work, comfortably defeated Eyre United on Monday at the Tumby Bay Oval.
While Tumby charged in, backed up and protected their players, Eyre United hung back and never really attempted to take the initiative. The game opened before a record crowd for a first game at Tumby Bay. The oval was in first class condition and the weather perfect for the match that was staged to benefit the R.S.L. funds. John Lodge a senior colt last year was doing a lot to get his team going in the first half and will be a player to watch this season. Llyall Swaffer in ruck and resting at full forward was a constant threat to the Saints and with solid defence provided by Dean Dunn and Graeme Baum, the Double Blues were always in control of the game and went onto to win by 28-points.

DOUBLE BLUES THRASH WAYBACKS
Roger Dunn as predicted made his debut for Tumby Bay against Waybacks as his appearance coincided with the Double Blues second win and best performance for the season. Without being outstanding, Dunn played quite well, especially in the latter stages of the match and his mere presence seems to do a lot for his team’s morale.

TUMBY BAY HOME BY ONE POINT
At Tumby Bay on ANZAC day a large crowd saw the Double Blues defeat Eyre United.
The game was the closest of the split round and a large crowd watched a match, the result of which was in doubt until the final siren. Neither side had any winning line, but several players stood out. Doug Young was Tumby’s best player and when switched to ruck roving in the second half, repelled many Eyre United attacking thrusts. Baum at full back proved far too strong for the Saints resting ruckmen and Kerry Dohring was the best ruckman on the ground. Both teams have a way to go before they reach their best, but when they do they will be forces to be reckoned with.

DOUBLE BLUES FEATURE IN FORM REVERSAL
Tumby Bay caused a major upset in final four calculations when they comfortably defeated Tasmans at the Tumby Bay Oval last Saturday. This was the second time the Double Blues have defeated the Roosters who have only lost four matches this year.
This was a great reversal of form for Tumby as only last week they were beaten by bottom placed Marble Range. Best for the Double Blues was undoubtedly Doug Young. This player who can lift the Tumby team, played a very strong game and Tasmans had no answer to his style of play. Another player to shine was Danny Horgan who played a very valuable match for his side as did his roving partner Ken Berryman. Baum at full back was as good as ever, without doubt he has been Tumby’s most consistent player all season. Kerry Dohring, Tumby Bay’s star import again played well. He rucked solidly all day and confused his opposing ruckmen with his varying tactics.

SOUTH TOO PACY IN SEMI-FINAL : BLUES OUT
With a comfortable win in Saturday’s first semi-final, Lincoln South now move onto the preliminary final on Saturday week and Tumby Bay go into mothballs for the season.
After a very close first half, South moved away from the Blues to win easily. Undoubtedly the best player for Tumby was full forward Llyall Swaffer whose five goals tell their own story. He completely dominated his position and was far too good for his direct opponent. Ken Berryman played a tigerish game as did Denis Chappell. Kerry Dohring played very well in ruck, winning a lot of tap downs. David was one of Tumby’s best, while Challinger played a serviceable game at centre half-back. Young was not the dominating factor as one would have thought, but he played solidly enough.

TUMBY BAY STAR SET FOR FINAL
Whether Port Adelaide will be ‘done like a dinner’ by Sturt when the teams clash in Saturday’s grand final is a moot point. However Tumby Bay publican Roger Dunn believes Sturt will avenge Port Adelaide’s narrow one-point victory two weeks ago.
Dunn played for Sturt in the preliminary final last week against North Adelaide, kicked six goals and was instrumental in several other goals. He left Tumby Bay on Monday to prepare for Saturday’s grand final. With his mother, Mrs M.J.Dunn and his brother Dean, he is a partner in the family hotel at Tumby Bay. The Dunn brothers are well known in local football circles. Roger played for South Australia in the Australian Football Carnival at Hobart earlier this year and has played 130 League games for the Double Blues. Born in Cleve 28 years ago, Roger Dunn was captain/coach of Tumby Bay in the Port Lincoln Football League and played four seasons for Tumby Bay. A life member of the Sturt Club, he has played for the Double Blues for eight seasons. His brother Dean still plays for Tumby Bay. He is 33 years old and like ‘Johnny Walker’ is still going strong. Roger Dunn shuttles twice a week between Adelaide and Tumby Bay to meet his football commitments with Sturt. For travelling purposes he leaves for Adelaide on a week day and returns to Tumby the following day. Saturday morning he is flown to Adelaide to play for Sturt and returns to Tumby Bay on Sunday. Thus Roger has a crowded life playing football for Sturt and winning friends and influences people at the family’s Tumby Bay Hotel.

TUMBY BAY HAVE WIN OVER LINCOLN SOUTH
Tumby Bay provided the first upset of the season when they defeated the more fancied South by two points at Tumby Bay on Saturday. The Eagles atrocious kicking for goal was a major factor affecting the result. The Eagles kicked only 8 goals from 34 shots.
Tumby Bay had first use of the strong breeze in the first quarter and took full advantage to kick six first term majors. The Eagles on the other hand wasted their chance with the breeze as they missed many goal scoring opportunities. With a 14-point lead at three quarter time and a further two last quarter goals the Double Blues did enough to be in front at the final siren. Lincoln South only have themselves to blame, kicking 2-12 in the final term.

PLUCKY BLUES UPSET WAYBACKS
Faster to the ball and combining better than their opponents, a determined Tumby Bay ridiculed the pre-match odds by trouncing the highly rated Waybacks at Tumby Bay.
Once again the bay-side oval proved to be the Redleg’s nemesis, as apart from a polished first quarter and a brief burst in the third, the visitors never appeared likely winners against the improved Blues.
The home side began with Loller at full forward, Vern Challinger at centre half-forward, Dennis Challinger centre half-back and Carpenter roving but it was all Waybacks in the first term as they kicked six straight goals. Chiefly through Carpenter the home side began to win the ball away from the crushes and with John Lodge and Doug Young prominent they wittled away the Demons lead to just a solitary point at the long break. At three quarter time the visitors were back at to a 16-point lead, but it wasn’t enough as the Double Blues finished strongly with the breeze to record a well deserved 11-point win. Carpenter has played in a variety of positions for his team, but on the ball in this game he showed pace and courage and won a feast of kicks to give his side tremendous drive around the packs. Max Lowe played close to the centre and won the position for his side with strength and good disposal. Chappell a big strong type at full back marked well all day and restricted his opponent to just a couple of scoring shots at goal. Young, especially in the last half brought his teammates into the game with intelligent play on the ball. Wilson on the wing and Pedler in the ruck were other good players.

TUMBY CLIMB TO FOURTH POSITION
Playing on their home ground and being at full strength for the first time this season, Tumby Bay was far too accomplished for Eyre United on Saturday.
The Saints led the Double Blues at quarter time after having first use of the breeze, but in the last three quarters it was all the home side as they added 14 goals to three from that point. Best for Tumby Bay was Bevan McDonald who turned in a near faultless display of strong, fearless and dashing back pocket play. His play inspired all the backmen, who formed a very tight defence. Roger Dunn with four goals and a fearless display of ball getting was not far behind and Wilson was creative on a wing.

DOUBLE BLUES EASILY AGAINST THE MAGPIES
The Double Blues were all the way winners in defeating Marble Range at Wangary on Saturday. It was good team effort by Tumby Bay who are starting to hit top form.
Max Lowe won centre with tigerish ball getting and plenty of speed. Cliff Carpenter with two good goals and tons of dash around the packs did well. Roger Dunn with aggressive roving and three goals, five behinds while resting was instrumental in his teams win as was John Williams who pulled down 12 strong marks and kicked four goals, eight behinds. Wilson, Pedler and Chappell were other good players for the Double Blues who are coming good at the business end of the season.

TUMBY BAY THROW OUT CHALLENGE
Tumby Bay left no doubts about their dedication of their major round intention when they comfortably defeated Waybacks by 31-points at Tumby Bay Oval last Saturday.
The home side was repeatedly first to the ball, controlled the aerial duals and their team work and backing up was top drawer. It was the second successive win by the Double Blues over teams above them on the ladder. It was evident early that new coach, Roger Dunn had injected new fire into the Blues. Tumby controlled the rucks early through the dominance of Lodge and Pedler who set-up Dunn, Young and Berryman to see the Blues out to a 33-point quarter time lead. An even Tumby team had many fine players, but new coach Roger Dunn was their inspiration and his fearless ball getting and good disposal was a great example to his side. Challinger at half back played his best game for some time with dash and vigour to dominate his position for four quarters, Max Lowe won his centre position. Doug Young and Doug Berryman, interchanging as followers both played fine games with strength and constructiveness. Dean Lodge in ruck, Denis Chappell at full back and Pedler were others who played well in a very even team effort that proved too much for the Demons to handle.

WAYBACKS CHAMPAGNE LAST QUARTER
Waybacks pulled off the greatest comeback since the invention of the boomerang when they roared back at Tumby Bay in the last quarter of last Saturday’s first semi-final.
The Blues played winning football for three quarters in their first major round appearance against Waybacks since 1964 and appeared certain winners when they led by 31-points at the last change. The Demons came storming home however to pull off the greatest come from behind win in recent memory. The match was a thriller right from the start, with plenty of pace, high marking and long kicking. The Blues were first to the ball in most cases in the first three quarters and their play-on game had Waybacks continually worried. The clash was probably the match of the year and the Redlegs last term fight back was a spine tingling sensation. It was champagne football! Although a disappointing loss, the Double Blues had many fine players including Roger Dunn who won many possessions around the ground despite the attention he received, Max Lowe who held his own in the centre against quality opposition and Denis Chappell at full back who repelled countless Wayback thrusts.

SIX GAMES WINS MAIL MEDAL
Tumby Bay captain coach Roger Dunn confounded the tipsters and won the 1967 Mail Medal after playing only six minor round games in the Port Lincoln Football League.
The Tumby Bay champion polled in all six games he played, polling a total of 16 votes to be tied with Kieran Kelly from Waybacks and Lincoln South captain coach Maurice Barry. Dunn was awarded the medal on a count back as he gained more first preference votes than the other two players. Tumby Bay keenly disappointed at their shock loss to Waybacks in the first semi-final last Saturday was wild with excitement at the announcement of Dunn’s win. Following a lavish celebration on Sunday, Roger slipped away to Adelaide early this week to train with Sturt. Twenty nine year old Dunn is a life member of the Sturt Football Club having played more than 130 games since 1957.
LEAGUE SIDE BID BY TUMBY BAY STAR
Will Tumby Bay captain-coach Roger Dunn clinch an unbelievable record this year by winning a Mail Medal in a Country League, yet playing in a SANFL semi-final or even a premiership side ?
This is the question intriguing all Eyre Peninsula football followers as Dunn a Tumby Bay publican and shock winner of this year’s Mail Medal as fairest and best in the Port Lincoln Football League this year, trains in Adelaide this week with the Sturt Football Club. Dunn played in Sturt’s seconds side this week in their loss to South Adelaide. Certainly all of Tumby and most probably Eyre Peninsula will be hoping that he gets selected in Sturt’s senior team for this week’s second semi-final match against North Adelaide. Achieving this feat would cap a chequered season for Dunn, who was a leading League goal kicker last year as well as representing the State in the Hobart championships. Dogged by injury this season, Dunn lost his berth in Sturt’s League team and took on the job of coaching his home town team, also known as the Double Blues toward the end of the season as a replacement for the departing Bevan McDonald. All of Tumby is agog at Dunn’s chances of selection in Sturt’s League side. Certainly he has the best wishes of all football fans on Eyre Peninsula.
TUMBY BAY DELAY ANNOUNCEMENT OF COACH
Tumby have delayed the announcement of their senior coach for season 1968, apparently waiting on Roger Dunn to clarify his intentions as he needs only three more League games in this his tenth season with Sturt to qualify for SANFL life membership.
Dunn has played in Sturt’s trials, including the Richmond game and who would wager that if he makes the grade – as his end of last season’s form would suggest – that his league appearances would be restricted to three.

BLUES ROMP HOME AGAINST WAYBACKS
A weakened Wayback team pressured Tumby Bay for three quarters last Saturday but the confident Blues added 4-3 to the Redlegs 1-2 in the last quarter to win by 19 points.
Waybacks were never able to cope with big John Williams in ruck or establish safe avenues of attack ahead of centre. Tumby had good players in rovers, John Lodge, Dunn and Carpenter. Max Lowe was strong at centre half-forward and Berryman beat his opponent in the centre but best player for the Double Blues was Denis Chappell at fullback who marked brilliantly at times and kicked well.

DASHING BLUES STUN EAGLES AT CENTENARY
A rejuvenated Tumby Bay brought league leaders Lincoln South back down to earth with a dashing display, showing the Eagles a clean pair of heels to win by 24 points.
Although the Blues led all day there was not a lot between the sides for the most part. When challenged in the final term John Williams was shifted out of the ruck to full forward and snapped two quick goals with rover like agility and Tumby lifted all over the ground and they won running away. The two best players on the ground played alongside each other on Tumby’s last line of defence. Rhind’s solidity and judgement in the back pocket was great support for the dash and brilliant marking of Chappell in the goals. Williams notched four match winning goals and was solid in ruck, Dunn after a quite start played strongly, wingers Wilson and Horgan were clear winners along with other good players including Lowe, John Lodge, Loller and Carpenter.

BLUES THRASH WOEFUL DEMONS AT TUMBY
Tumby Bay with an impressive team display, inflicted the heaviest defeat for many years upon Waybacks when they thrashed them by 69 points at Tumby Bay on Saturday.
The Blues with winners all around the ground where never seriously challenged by the disappointing Demons and virtually did as they liked. They carried the ball away from the crushes through Dunn, Carpenter and Wait with ridiculous ease. Tumby won well across half forward and had a good goal kicker in Williams who finished with six majors to his credit.

EARLY BREAK GIVES VICTORY TO SOUTH
Establishing an early break Lincoln South withstood a strong second half challenge from Tumby Bay to win a crowd pleasing game at Tumby Bay by 11 points on Saturday.
The Blues trailed by 30 points at the first break before winning all three remaining quarters of the match. John Lodge returning from a three match absence showed amazing ball control and goal sense to boot seven goals and also hit the post twice after being rarely sighted in the first half. Ken Berryman roved strongly, pulling down many strong marks and delivering the ball well while co-rover Carpenter despite a leg injury showed dash and skill. Wait the never-say-die battler, again showed his worth with a tigerish display, while Dean Lodge and Loller got ontop in ruck as the game progressed.

TUMBY TROUNCE TASMANS
Playing more purposeful football after half time Tumby, with clear winners in attack where John Williams and John Lodge booted 11 goals between them, ran away from Tasmans to score a convincing 46 point victory at Tumby Bay on Saturday.
It was a fast and vigorous game with both sides appreciating the perfect conditions and excellent turf. Tumby sprang somewhat of a surprise by starting Ken Berryman in a back pocket, Roger Dunn on a half forward flank and John Lodge placed permanently in a forward pocket alongside John Williams. John Lowe opened the scoring for the Double Blues with a strong goal followed by King and Williams after good play from John Lodge. Tasmans recorded a string of behinds before their first goal just before the first quarter siren with Tumby leading 5-2 to 1-8. It was goal for goal in the second term and at the main break the home side led the Roosters by 18 points. The second half was dominated by the Double Blues with the brilliant Lodge in particular out-pointing his opponents with apparent ease. Williams, scarcely moving from the goal square following an injury to his knee after he collided with the goal post kicked his six goal in the third term. Some fire came into the game as players tackled fiercely following Burgoyne’s severe dumping of Wait, whose head crashed heavily onto the turf. He along with Williams both left the ground but Tumby had done enough to claim an easy victory.

TUMBY BAY CRUSH SOUTH IN LAST TERM
Reacting strongly to two successive defeats, and to be “written off” by tipsters, Tumby Bay kept its nose in front for three quarters before going on to completely demoralise a shell shocked Eagles with a devastating last quarter, kicking 10-5 to one Souths solitary goal, to topple the League Leaders at the Tumby Bay oval last Saturday.
Following three quartersof hard, close checking football, few people were prepared for the last quarter onslaught in which JohnWilliams booted five goals and Roger Dunn ran riot. The Double Blues led by just four points heading into the last term before a flood of goals saw the home team completely demoralise the Eagles. Dunn kicked the opening goal for the quarter followed by further majors to John Lodge, Dean Lodge and a bag of five from Williams, but it was Dunn who provided the highlight of the last term when he grabbed the ball at half back, crashed through a pack, eluded several opponents in a burst of bouncing and finally sent through a mighty punt while running at top speed. Working four rovers (Dunn, Berryman, Carpenter and John Lodge) Tumby was able to keep up relentless pressure which paid dividends in the final quarter. Dean Lodge made an impressive return, pulling down 12 marks for the game and rucking well, while Rhind turned in another sound reliable game in the back pocket. Across half back the Challinger brothers turned in solid performances. Carpenter’s pace either on the ball or across half forward made him a winner while Williams with five last quarter goals and his good ruck work played well, Denis Chappell and John Schroeder were two others to play well.

TUMBY BAY WIN IN SLUSH AT LIPSON
Tumby won its final minor round encounter for 1968 with their neighbouring rivals Eyre United in the mud and slush at Lipson Oval on Saturday, when they had more purposeful players than their opponents to record a 22 point victory.
The conditions were probably the worst for the year with gale force winds and showers to add to the players discomfort. Best players for the Double Blues were Danny Horgan who was a constant supply line for Tumby. His terrier like ball getting was a feature of his game and his kicking, though not the tidiest usually found his team mates. Roger Dunn was a consistent kick winner, roving well all day. Newcomer Bob Rattray played impressively while Bob Cameron marked strongly in his role as run-on follower. Other Tumby players to do well were Dean Lodge in ruck, Cliff Carpenter, with pace won many kicks around centre and Denis Chappell was sound as usual at full back.

TUMBY WIN FIRST SEMI-FINAL
It took Tumby Bay just 15 minutes of brilliant football in the third quarter of last Saturday’s first semi-final, to move Waybacks out of 1968 premiership calculations and themselves into the preliminary final with a 11-point victory.
The first major round match was a fiery, pace filled affair and very even for much of the way, but Tumby’s great third quarter in which they added 8 goals 1 behind to Wayback’s solitary point, decided the issue. The Redlegs had no answer to the strong marking, straight kicking of big John Williams at the goal front, who finished with eight goals, or the ball getting ability of Tumby captain Roger Dunn who repeatedly put the ball into the square where Williams’ bulk and strong hands were too much for the Wayback defence. Although held scoreless in the last quarter the Double Blues solid defence led by Lawrie, Chappell, Berryman and resting ruckman Dean Lodge coupled with the brilliance of Dunn and Williams were enough to see Tumby Bay through to the preliminary final.

WILLIAMS BOOTS DOUBLE BLUES IN
Big John Williams booted Tumby Bay into the grand final with eleven great goals against Marble Range in the preliminary final last Saturday. A brilliant eight goal second quarter (four to Williams) enabled Tumby Bay to lead by 34 points at half time.
Three quick goals to Williams immediately upon resumption stretched Tumby’s lead to 53-points and the Blues seemed to have the match in their keeping. To the Rangers credit they fought back in great style to kick a couple of goals just before three quarter time to trail by 40-points at the last change. Very few would have given the Rangers any hope of winning but they got within two goals of the Blues late in the last term before Tumby steadied through Chappell who marked brilliantly all day, Dunn and Berryman to move into the grand final. It was a grand exhibition by both teams. Eleven goals against any team is a great effort, and the manner in which Williams got his in this preliminary final stamped him as the hope of the Blues in next week’s big game. Tigerish little Danny Horgan on the wing was a day long winner and sparked off the Blues second quarter burst from the centre. Chappell was strong and polished and marked brilliantly. Dunn after a quite start provided his usual strong ball winning and disposal. Ken Berryman played almost faultlessly in a back pocket. John Lodge was a constant danger in attack even with limited opportunities. Wait with good marking and body work was a fine foil for Dunn on the ball and Cliff Carpenter did many fine things.

ROGER DUNN WINS MAIL MEDAL
The Mail Medal count was conducted at the Wayback Football Club last Saturday night with Tumby Bay’s Roger Dunn winning the medal. The ex Sturt star who also won last year’s medal polled in ten of the thirteen games in which he played to win the award comfortably from Wayback’s Kieren Kelly. The league had a large board made up similar to that used in the Magarey Medal count and those present were able to watch the progressive vote totals. Dunn due to work commitments at their family owned Tumby Bay Hotel, was unable to attend the medal count.
TUMBY TIPPED TO WIN GRAND FINAL
Saturday’s big game between Tumby Bay and Lincoln South will be a “grand final” in every sense of the word, and should be the most bitterly fought battle outside of the Federal seat of Melbourne.
If there is one difference between the two sides it’s the big boy in front of goals, John Williams who has booted 19 goals in the two major round matches so far. There is no doubt that the whole key to the flag lies right here and Lincoln South are acutely aware of this and if they can stop him from kicking a bundle of goals it will go a long way in assisting them to win the premiership. Tumby Bay’s centreline is a strong one with Danny Horgan who has always had more grit than a garden path on one wing, the elusive and constructive Cliff Carpenter in the centre and the consistent Rattray on the other wing. In defence the Blues also look strong with Denis Chappell, Ken Berryman who in a back pocket is the best thing since an un-opened pay packet and the close checking Challinger brothers. Unless there are some startling surprises, the Blues with the bogey man Williams looming large have too many potential match winners in form and should be favourites to win the 1968 flag on Saturday.

PREMIERSHIP TO TUMBY AFTER GREAT STRUGGLE
Tumby Bay won its first Port Lincoln Football League post-war premiership by snatching a dramatic last gasp win over Lincoln South in a great grand final last Saturday at Centenary Oval. The season’s final and most important game proved to be a fitting climax, as not more than two straight kicks separated the sides all day.
Although only a goal up at half time the Eagles looked to be doing better than the Blues. At three quarter time the Eagles had increased their lead to nine points and looked poised for victory, but Tumby came back to monopolise the attacking over the last half of the final quarter. After seemingly frittering away several golden opportunities, Tumby snatched victory with a dramatic snapped goal. With only seconds remaining John Lodge who had been quite all day since the first quarter, picked up the ball behind the rucks from a boundary throw-in and popped the ball through the goal with a kick that seemingly travelled through the milling pack in front of him. It was not much of a kick as kicks go, but it turned out to be the best one ever done by a Tumby player in Lincoln – it won them the 1968 Premiership. Denis Chappell was Tumby Bay’s best player with a classic display of marking and rebound football. Ken Berryman alongside him gave a similar display and Roger Dunn despite a quite third term won many kicks and often inspired his team. Carpenter won his position with plenty of dash, Loller and Dean Lodge held many field marks while Rattray played consistently and finished his game off with a brilliant last quarter.

TUMBY BAY THRASH EYRE UNITED
Kicking 20-16 to 5-4 Tumby Bay completely outplayed their neighbouring rivals in the ANZAC day clash at the Tumby Bay Oval last Saturday.
A large crowd saw the Blues outscore the saints in all quarters except the third when although unable to do much scoring they were able to restrict the home team. Best players for the Double Blues were Cliff Carpenter in the centre, Sandercock who used tremendous speed as a rover and Roger Dunn who was very constructive on the ball. DOUBLE BLUES NOW IN FOUR
Tumby Bay returned to the winners list and the league top four by comfortably defeating Waybacks by 25 points at the Tumby Bay Oval last Saturday.
The Blues who had lost their two previous matches showed a welcome return to form. Even without Roger Dunn and Vern Challinger they were, through the agency of a dominant defence and a winning centreline, obviously the superior side for most of the day. Played in perfect conditions the match was evenly contested until the home side opened up a four goal lead midway through the second term which they were able to maintain for the duration of the game. Ken Berryman gave a great ball winning display and was a terrific replacement in the centre of the ground for the injured Dunn. Wilson and Horgan were winning wingers, Chappell and Cameron strong defenders and Carpenter and Williams were prominent in a good side.

DOUBLE BLUES DOWN THE ROOSTERS
After gaining a handy lead at half time, Tumby Bay were able to hold Tasmans out for the remainder of the match to win by 20 points at Ravendale Oval last Saturday.
The Blues opened well and began sending the ball in high to the forward lines where Denis Chappell was finishing off the drives with strong marking and deadly accurate drop kicking for goal. Horgan was winning his wing well and Dunn was getting plenty of the football around the packs. The Blues never looked in any trouble in the second half and cruised to victory after leading by four goals at three quarter time.Tumby Bay’s best would have been Rattray for his good attacking work, with Chappell not far behind with his eight goals. Others to play well were Dunn, Sandercock and Horgan.
Tumby Bay 14.16 (100)
Tasmans 12.8 (80)
Best: Tumby Bay – Chappell, Rattray, Sandercock.
Goals: - Chappell 8, Sandercock 2, Williams, Rattray, Dunn, Lodge.

CRUCIAL ONE FOR TUMBY BAY
Tumby Bay may be a better side than Tasmans at the moment, but unless they win the most important game of the year – against Waybacks at Centenary Oval this weekend – it’s not going to do them one scrap of good
The Blues are hanging on to fourth position by the odd premiership point, but with the Roosters finishing off the season against Eyre United, Tumby have to win one of their two remaining matches – and their other one is against top team Lincoln South. Nothing much has gone Tumby’s way this year, but they have one thing going for them and that is that more of their players are going better than at any stage this season – Chappell, Sandercock, Dunn and Rattray for instance. Apart from Dunn and Williams who rest up forward, the Blues have Chappell, Sandercock, Johnston and Rattray all coming good at the right time in attack. How about that ex-full back’s eight “sausage rolls” last week. Denis Chappell’s 17 goals in three attempts at full forward is a fine effort and has given the Double Blues the striking power they had previously lacked. There does not appear to be much between the two sides across the all important centreline where the visitors must win if they are to be victorious in this game. Carpenter, Horgan and Wilson is a pretty fair line comprising pace, determination and constructiveness in that order. Dennis Challinger, Berryman, Loller and Chapman give the Blues an in-form defence in a must win for Tumby Bay if they wish to see finals action again in 1969.

SOUTHS OUST DOUBLE BLUES FROM FINAL FOUR
Undefeated Lincoln South, more accomplished in all facets of the game, continued their triumphant minor round supremacy with a convincing 10 goal win over Tumby Bay.
Best for Tumby were Roger Dunn, always active and sending his team into attack with long direct kicking. Sandercock gave a great display of ball getting and fine disposal, Berryman played well in defence and while on the ball. Others to play well were Lodge, Johnston, Franks and Higgins.

IMPRESSIVE BLUES OUTCLASS RANGERS
Tumby Bay opened the season in fine style at Wangary last week when they impressively ripped through Marble Range in the last half to easily win.
Tumby Bay with a few new faces, impressive ones at that and again inspiringly led by Roger Dunn showed their best form since their 1968 premiership win in defeating a side that was their nemesis last season. When the Rangers led comfortably at half time they looked capable of going on to win the game. However the Blues with Barry France at centre half-forward, Chappell in front of goal and Dunn, Williams and Lodge on the ball revitalising the side, hit the front mid-way through the third term. With superior ball movement, Tumby took the game away from the home side in the final quarter. The result, something of an upset judging by 1969 standards, was a apparent well before the final siren and was a most impressive performance from the improved and polished Tumby Bay team.

CONSTRUCTIVE PLAY GIVES TUMBY A COMFORTABLE WIN
In a game that never reached any great heights, Tumby Bay was able to produce enough bursts of constructive teamwork to stay comfortably in front of the visiting Marble Range team and coast home to win by 19 points..
Best for Tumby Bay was probably Danny Horgan and although his kicking was astray (6 behinds) John Williams was not far behind him. Bob Wigley on a wing played well as did Eric Kotz on a half back-flank. Others under notice were rovers Sandercock and Berryman, France, Chappell, Rattray who was elusive in the forward lines and Vern Challinger.

RANGERS END TUMBY BAY’S MISERY
Marble Range finalised Tumby Bay’s faint hopes of major round success by knocking the Blues out off the finals fight for 1970, at Centenary Oval last Saturday.
The Magpies in the first half showed more determination than Tumby to get the ball and as a result led by 55-points at half time. The Double Blues had to try something and it was in the third quarter that they made their move. Dunn lifted his game dramatically to give his side drive from the centre. France who had moved to centre half-forward began to grab marks but his kicking was astray, managing just 4 behinds for the quarter. Williams and Pedler also missed simple chances which meant the Blues had blown whatever chance Dunn’s courage had provided. The match deteriorated in the second half with the Magpies adding a wayward 2.13 to Tumby’s equally inaccurate score of 4.8 Best players for the Blues were Dunn, driving of himself in an effort to inspire his team mates, made him outstanding and Williams in a strong effort in the ruck earned mention. Also deserving of mention was young Gary Carr, who started as a reserve, came on as a fullback and more than held his own. Barry France, in the second half and Danny Horgan were the other two worthy of mention.
Marble Range 4.3 10.4 11.8 12.17 (89)
Tumby Bay 0.1 1.3 4.10 5.11 (41)
Best: Tumby Bay – Dunn, Williams, Carr, France, Horgan.
Goals: - Pedler, Wiliams, Trezise, Chappell, Dunn.
