KAPINNIE TRIUMPH OVER BLUES
Kapinnie continued its undefeated minor round and finals series with a convincing 76 point win against an honest but outclassed Tumby Bay in the Great Flinders Football League grand final at Cummins on Saturday.
Tumby Bay were searching for their first flag in 23 years while Kapinnie were looking to make it back to back premierships. The Blues started in grand style, with an early goal to centre man Paul Lands, but his joy was short-lived as moments later he was carried from the ground with what appeared to be a serious knee injury. The Kapinnie forwards were well held by the Tumby defence and at quarter time after kicking with the breeze the Tigers led by only 11-points. The Blues had good players in Woolford and Richardson in defence, Michael Harris at centre half forward and Duffield was taking some strong marks around the ground. The Tigers blew the game wide open in the second term slamming on five goals in quick time which saw them hold a commanding six goal lead at the main break. Two early third quarter goals from Kapinnie saw the lead blow-out to 50-points before the Blues hit-back with five straight goals to see the lead cut to just 21-points. Gavin Dunn who had been moved to centre was the instigator of many of the Blues attacks with David Butler also very damaging. The Kapinnie side as they had done all year responded to the challenge and at Three quarter time the margin was back out to 40-points. The last quarter was played in atrocious conditions, but it didn’t stop Kapinnie as they kicked another six goals to run out easy winners 21-13 to 9-9. For the Blues Andrew Woolford was probably their best with Duffield, Butler, Griffiths and their captain Gavin Dunn who had a very good second half. In the final analysis the Tigers were simply too classy for the Blues who did a mighty job in grabbing a grand final berth from fourth spot and their effort along with their two hard fought wins against Ramblers and Cummins is to be commended.

THREE STRAIGHT FOR THE BLUES
Tumby Bay continued its determined march toward the Great Flinders Football League finals with a 61 point win over Eyre United at Tumby Bay on Saturday.
Tumby Bay held a 13-point advantage at quarter time after having first use of the breeze. For the home side Duffield was having a big influence on the game, Burton was causing problems at full forward and skipper Gavin Dunn was good around the ground. Late goals in the second term to Burton and Higgins saw the Blues extend their lead to 21-points at the main break. After half time Tumby came out full of running and went on to win the game 17-17 to 8-10. Better players for the Blues included Duffield, Dunn, and Craig Franks.

KAPINNIE WIN PREMIERSHIP
Kapinnie won their fourth consecutive Great Flinders premiership with a hard fought win over a valiant Tumby Bay at Cummins on Saturday.
Led magnificently by their/coach Tom Phelps in the centre, Tumby Bay had chances to go 4-5 goals clear in the second term, but could never quite ram home this advantage. When centre half back Michael Noblett ran the length of the ground to boot an inspirational goal at this time, the patient Tumby Bay supporters (25 years since their last flag) might have thought positively. But at this stage, the Blues lost prolific possession winner Joe Cross with a knee injury, and this robbed them of much drive. Even late in the game Tumby might still have had a chance had captain Gavin Dunn’s kick not been touched before it went through the goals. But it was not to be, and even though their efforts were more than honourable, the Tumby Bay team was one of dejection and exhaustion after the game. In a losing cause Coach Tom Phelps kicking and marking was as good as you could wish to see. Cross was excellent until injured, Richardson and Noblett were solid in defence, Michael Harris gave his all up forward, Duffield was good in ruck along with rover Nisbet and Brett Higgins on a wing.

TUMBY TURN THE TABLES ON KAPINNIE
Tumby Bay went on a scoring spree to defeat Kapinnie by 70 points in the opening match of the Great Flinders Football League played at Edillilie on Saturday.
In a replay of the 1993 grand final the Blues turned the tables on the Tigers by taking control of the game early and maintaining it. Tumby’s new coach, Joe Cross had his charges pumped up to start the ’94 season with a win. Tumby attacked from the first bounce and with Burton and Cross up forward they soon had majors on the board. Blues recruits, Steve Milton and Peter Griffiths gave their side plenty of drive and at quarter time they held a handy four goal lead. The second quarter was much the same as the first with Tumby extending the margin to 54-points at the long break. The Blues kept the pressure on all day with forwards Richard Murphy booting six goals and Peter Burton five. Peter Griffiths and Steve Milton were dominant mid fielders for Tumby Bay with both players collecting 30 plus touches and booting 2 goals. Craig Higgins, Mark Loudon and Peter Williams were also fine contributors in the comprehensive victory.

TUMBY WIN TIGHT CONTEST
Bullett Anesbury made his debut for Tumby Bay when they defeated Ramblers by 13 points in Great Flinders football in a tight game on Saturday.
Tumby won the toss and kicked with a stiff southerly breeze. The Blues held a 15-point advantage at the first change with Bratton, Cross and Curtis all prominent players. The Tumby lead was cut to 7 points at the long break with debutant Anesbury and Weckert causing the Magpies some concern up forward. The second half was a tight contest but the Blues held sway to win an important game.

TUMBY BAY DOMINATE GRAND FINAL
In cold and wet conditions Tumby Bay broke a 27 year premiership drought by defeating Lock in a hard-hitting, low scoring grand final at Cummins on Saturday.
It was never a free-flowing pretty game but the hard physical nature of the contest held the interest of the huge crowd throughout the duration of the game. Goals to Coad and Giradi in the opening term saw the Blues hold a one goal advantage going into the second quarter, a margin they extended at the long break with further goals to Curtis and Coad while Lock failed to register a score. After half time Michael Curtis came strongly into the game and booted his second goal and when Coach Rex Whittaker was awarded a 50 metre penalty and goaled Tumby had opened up a match winning six goal lead. Lock were not done with yet however and banged-on three quick majors to reduce the lead to just 21-points nearing three quarter time. Andrew Higgins scored a valuable goal just prior to the three quarter time siren to see the Blues back out to a handy 27-point lead at the final break. Blues big man Bernard Anesbury scored the first goal of the final quarter but Lock replied quickly with two of their own to keep their faint hopes alive. With best-a-field, Joe Cross and Curtis in total mid-field control, Tumby steadied to run out comfortable winners in a hard fought grand final by 26 points. Tumby Bay won flags in all four grades to make 1995 a memorable year for the club.

TUMBY BLUES POUND SAINTS
In its final home game of the season, Tumby Bay easily accounted for Eyre United in what was a disjointed and generally uninspiring game, played in almost ideal fast-ball conditions, on Saturday.
The home side had winners all over the ground as they blew the Saints away in the first term scoring 9-5 to nothing. Weckert was a strong marking focal point in attack and the Curtis boys along with Guy Barnwell (six goals) provided plenty of run. Good defence by Harris, Griffiths (returning from a lengthy lay-off) and Giradi frustrated Eyre United’s scoring opportunities. Craig Higgins was another defender who was able to set up a lot of opportunities with his pace and ball-skills at half back.

KAPINNIE IN NAIL-BITING ENCOUNTER
Kapinnie won a tightly contested nail-biter in Great Flinders football on Saturday to put Tumby Bay out of the finals race.
The scores were never more than a few points apart, but Tumby paid dearly for its final quarter inaccuracy which enabled Kapinnie to snatch a goal victory in the dying moments of the game. The reigning premiers Tumby Bay went into the game as favourites and they looked the better team early with pacy onballers, Barnwell, Curtis and Kroemer creating chances for forwards Cross, Dunn and Whittaker to capitalise on. A draw seemed almost certain as the game approached full time but the Tigers kicked the winning goal with only seconds remaining. The Blues best player was Michael Curtis who ran hard and used the ball effectively all day. Weckert was a strong player all day, Rex Whittaker led from the front scoring three goals and working hard in the packs while Barnwell despite dropping out of the game late, did many fine things.

RAMBLERS DOWN BLUES IN FIRST SEMI-FINAL
Cummins Ramblers eliminated an inaccurate Tumby Bay side in the first semi-final in Great Flinders football on Saturday.
Aided by the breeze Tumby Bay had many opportunities to kick goals in the last quarter to snatch an unlikely win against the Magpies who led for most of the second half, but could only manage a score of 2-8 to a solitary point. Ramblers won the contest in the third quarter when they dominated the Blues to kick 9 goals 2 to Tumby’s 2 goals. Better players for the Blues were Darrell Stratford, Robert Flavel, Steve Lawrie, Craig Higgins and Michael Curtis.

TUMBY DOMINANT EARLY
Tumby Bay gave last year’s premiers Ramblers a dose of the ‘Blues’ to take top spot on the ladder an establish themselves as early favourites for the flag.
Brian Coad with his ruck work and field play brought the on-ball runners into play with Craig Curtis and Kyle Atkinson feeding off his supremacy. The Blues kicked five straight goals in the first quarter with the aid of a slight breeze to lead by 19-points at the first change. The Blues extended the margin to 30-points at the long break and were never seriously challenged for the remainder of the game with the Magpies kicking poorly for goal. Best players for the Blues were Brian Coad, Kyle Atkinson, Andrew Higgins (six goals) and Kerry Franks for a solid four quarter effort.

TUMBY BAY WIN GRAND FINAL
In a great contest the Blues won their second Great Flinders Football League premiership when they defeated arch rivals Ramblers by 20 points in a classic contest in front of a 2500 strong crowd at Cummins oval.
It was a great grand final and the atmosphere was electric with the huge crowd, close scores and strong physical contests. Tumby starting with the aid of a slight breeze were out of the blocks early with Pedemonte drifting down from his wing to score a goal within the first minute of play. Andrew Zimmerman was prominent early for the Blues using his strong frame to great effect and posting two valuable goals. Tim Leehane added another just before the quarter time break to see Tumby lead by 24-points. Ramblers hit back in the second term and at halftime had reduced the margin to eleven points. The second half began with Ramblers scoring two quick goals to hit the lead for the first time but Tumby replied quickly and booted four goals for the term and lead 10-6 to 7-9 at the last change. The last quarter was a fairly even affair with the Blues always able to keep the Magpies at arms length. Tumby steadied to run out comfortable winners in a hard fought grand final by 20 points.

MASSIVE TOTAL FOR TUMBY BAY
17 goals for Clint Giradi at the goal front. The score line says it all: 38-24 to 3-1
The highlight for Tumby was a solid four quarter effort with not slackening off. Quarters of 12, 8, 9 and nine goals attest to that.
Giradi finished with a personal tally of seventeen goals with his excellent marking and accurate kicking for goal thrilling the spectators. Tumby’s 233-point victory would be a welcome return to form and enable them to regroup and wind up for the run into the finals.

BLUES EARN GRAND FINAL BERTH
The 1999 Great Flinders Football League premiers arrogantly disposed of the challenge to this year’s flag by Cummins Kapinnie and gave them a resounding beating by 57 points at the Ungarra Oval in the second semi-final on Saturday.

CHAMPAGNE FOR COUGARS
The 2000 Great Flinders Football League grand final has been won by Cummins Kapinnie reversing the result of the 2nd semi-final and beating the Blues by 73 points at the Cummins oval in front of a fantastic crowd on Saturday.
Craig Curtis won the toss for the Blues and kicked with the aid of the breeze but it was the Cougars who were first on the scoreboard. Tumby struggled to find the footy in the first quarter until late goals from Leehane and Clark helped their cause, but they still trailed by two goals at the first change. The second and third quarters were an even affair but in the last quarter Cougars ran all over the top of a tiring Tumby outfit kicking nine goals to one. Best players for the Tumby team were Brian Coad, Craig Binder, on-ballers Michael Kroemer and Peter Griffiths and Clint Giradi (four goals)
