The Rebels would have the added inspiration for the win with their coach Rick Burns playing his 100th game for the club.
With the Roos looking to right the ship and the Rebels looking to break a losing streak against the Etobicoke boys that was currently at 7 dating back to 2006 it was going to an interesting night.
The game was a cracker jack right from the 1st bounce. CHF Travis Mckenzie started in great touch and was marking everything that came his way, while Team Canada candidate Kyle Bridson picked up several possessions and his delivery into the forward line was highlight as he feed the hungry forwards that were keen to get a score on the board. Big “Timmy” Wingrove is looking to also get a call up to team Canada and was winning the tap in the ruck giving 1st touch to midfielders Lovett, Paterson and Marshall. The ball moved out of the center to mckenzie who’s hands were on fire as he kicked 4 goals for the term to give the Roos an 8 point lead as the Tor. Rebels hit back with 3 kick goals to end the first 20 minutes.
The new inclusion of Aussie Mark Storey adds a new dimension to the Roos structure with his ability to play forward, back or midfield and this was evident during the 2nd quarter as he set many attack from midfield or provided options while playing up forward. World XVIII player John Elliott also was instrumental during this term as the Roos looked to stretch their lead. The combination of Ben “Jermaine” Watts, Jeff “Chopper” Reid and Kyle “Air Canada” Girardo at the last line of defence are quickly gaining a reputation as a tough 3 to beat. Highlight of the quarter came from Colin “CMoney” Mark after a strong lead and forward diving mark that required more courage than man feeding a shark. Goals were kicked by McKenzie who now had 6 for the game and Andrew Redelmeier who kicked his first for the club. The Roos getting out to a 19 point lead at the long break.
Coach Curran made few changes at the break as he sensed a charge from the Tor. Rebels who pride themselves on a never give up attitude and it best to get on the front foot first in these cases.
Murray Lovett was given the role of putting the brakes on Tor. Rebels gun Michael Fabbri, while Colin Bigley in his return game went forward, providing the flexibility in the team big man rotations alongside Manny “I need a car” Matata and Jeff “Timmy” Wingrove. The Rebels and Roos both pushed hard looking to see which team would blink first in this staring contest. Travis “Soft hands” McKenzie was crashing marking contests and if it didn’t stick he would clean up at ground level and drive the ball forward. Some good work by McKenzie and Bigley provided a pretty goal but some bad kicking in front of the big sticks could be the undoing of the team as the Rebels closed the gap to 10 points with 20 minutes to go.
After a stern talking too by Curran, the boys came out hard but again some poor shooting for goal was frustrating all on the ground. The team was looking for a hero when Adam “Super Captain” Paterson stepped up to kick straight from outside 50 to break the streak of 3 points to give the boys a lift. To show that it wasn’t a 1 off occasion the “Super Captain” does it again dodging around 2 Rebels straightens and kicks another. Now the team is on a high then goes forward where Manny Matata marks strongly and goals to give the Roos the distance from the Rebels that they could not close. The Roos by 21 points after a long day at the office.
