MATCH REPORT:
Round 10 saw a struggling Dingos outfit in tough against one of the league powerhouse teams in the Guelph Gargoyles. The gargoyles boasted an impressive 8-1 record up to this round, including a narrow 2 point win against the Dingos in round 1. The Dingos were going the other direction, with a 3-6 record, but strong with the knowledge that the boys from Yonge and St. Clair hadn't played their best footy to date.
The sun was bright and the day was another warm one as Southern Ontario is right in the midst of a drought that saw Margaret Green park in Guelph greet both teams with a rock hard ground and yellowed grass from a lack of rain. The Dingos won the toss and elected to kick to the larger of the two goals into a slight wind. The game started out well for the Dingos controlling most of he play, but again inaccurate kicking would see he Dingos lose the qtr as the Gargs converted truly on some late quarter goals. The run out of the middle was strong as Jimmy, Robbo and Geoff were in and under and Butch and Rick were presenting strong up forward. When the siren sounded the dingos had 2 majors to the Gargoyles 3.
A couple of positional changes were made during the quarter time break, including an injured Tom to FF and Big Rick into the ruck and the boys were back into it, ready for the next quarter to start.
Kicking with the breeze the red and black were told to kick long but clean possessions became difficult as the small confines and hard running and tackling by both teams made for a scrappy quarter that again saw Guelph out score the Dingos, this time 2 goals to 1. Jimmy's run and the young legs of Crawford and Denis kept it close, but it was the stalwarts in the back of Bobby, Tim Moller and Mike Karas (welcome back!) that thwarted several of the gargoyle attacks and setting up rebound opportunities that unfortunately couldn't be converted on.
During half time the coaching staff implored the team to think about their spacing, and to trust their teammates. Murph continued to run off his man pumping the ball into the forward line, but majors were hard to come by so far this day and Guelph continued to outscore the Dingos again 2 goals to 1. Both teams missed golden opportunities in front of the big sticks and the behind total continued to pile up. Butch made a masterful coaching move putting OB in the backline who cleaned up a lot of the ball and took some strong marks.
The start of the last quarter saw the dingos down 7 goals to 4, and the boys knew they would be in tough - but what happened next is the sort of thing that seasons are turned around on. The entire team lifted - the onballers won the majority of the centre breaks and continued their run around the ground. Jimmy Duggan (Dual BOG) was inspirational getting knocked down but getting up time and time again to keep playing. The backline held strong with some stellar play from Karas (Dual BOG), Bob and Denis, and the forward line finally started to kick some goals with Stewy being moved to FF kicking 2 and Butch kicking a goal from an impossible angle. Robbo sealed the win with a beautiful snap from 35 and the dingos knew they home. The final siren sounded and the Dingos had taken it in a come from behind victory: 8.11.59 to 7.7.49.
A great win and one that can really propel the red and black through the rest of the season and hopefully into the playoffs. The team is rewarded with two weeks off before squaring off against the Central Blues in a bother crucial match on Aug 11th.
Best: Mike Karas / Jimmy Duggan, Denis Cormier, Bob Clarke, Geoff Hanson
