The Discing Demons are into their fourth season as the Australian football club’s ultimate frisbee team. Currently sitting second on the ladder, the Demons are showing a strong presence in the Toronto Sport and Social Club competition. Our one loss was to the first place team, a narrow one-point defeat on a night when we didn’t have our best squad.
The strength is in our women! With four of the mainstays from our championship women’s footy team, the two women always on the field can out pace most of the competition even with some strong female athletes in opposition. With only five players per side, having two women winning battles all over the field really helps.
Ultimate is an excellent pre-season sport as it is remarkably similar to footy. The offensive side of the disc emphasizes leading into space to have a clear passing lane from a stationary thrower. The defensive side requires running hard on the turnover and playing fierce one-on-one defence. If you aren’t within arm’s reach, the disc can beat you to your opponent, which is a valuable lesson to take to footy. Even with the traditional laid back approach, the competition (and the Irish blood on the team) still gets fierce with 2 minutes left and a point or two separating the sides.
