The sport of Australian Rules Football has been part of the Canadian culture for 30 years now. Being a featured sport on the “Wild World of Sports” program, it was a staple of most Canadian Saturday morning viewing. The beauty of the sport lies in the multiple positions, varied duties and club atmosphere. Really, anyone can play the great sport of “footy”, from guys who are 6'6" to guys crushing just on 5'; or for anyone who's never played a team sport period. The great thing about it is that it is not a sport that discriminates on size or ability. The Hamilton Wildcats have been instrumental in taking some very green recruits and turning them into very fit, long time Cats. The sport itself is by no means played at an amateur level, with players from Hamilton who have gone on to represent the National Canadian Australian Football Team, Northwind, with opportunities to travel abroad to Melbourne, Australia for the International Cup held every couple of years. The sport itself is very fast paced, dynamic and extremely fulfilling. For most Canadians, it’s easy to draw the similarities to rugby, hockey, lacrosse with aspects of almost every sport you can think of, basketball, American football etc. The Wildcats pride themselves on their diverse social gatherings, tight community atmosphere and become an extended family to the Australians that take up residence in the Hamilton area. With social functions throughout the year comprised of: The Recruitment Social, Sponsor’s Day, Wildcats Night @ Ivor Wynne Stadium (watching the Hamilton Ti-Cats. CFL), AFL Grand Final Party, Food Drives (in conjuntion w/ Neighbour to Neighbour Centre) the annual game played in Ottawa and evenings out with the boys, there is no shortage of things to do with the 'Cats. The current executive is active in recruiting, teaching and accepting all Canadian players to this great club. Don’t let the unfamiliarity of the game put you off, NO EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED; each of the current Canadian Wildcat players were in the same situation as you and are now 'CATS FOR LIFE!!!
