It was a fantastic weekend of Australian Rules Football as both the men’s and women’s team made history. The Carleton Warriors women’s team went into Montreal on Sunday and came home as AFL Quebec Premiers, beating the Notre Dame De Grace Giants 82-24 for their second straight title.
The Warriors were the best team all year, and were the favorites heading into the Grand Final. The score reflected that, and they came out with only one thing on their minds – goals. The Warriors kicked an incredible 8 goals in the first quarter to get out to an insurmountable 48-0 lead.
They never looked back. Beth Sheffield came up forward to kick 2 additional goals, while Christie Childers and Courtney Diotte held the backline, prevented any hope of a comeback.
Belinda Wozniak added to her goal total (I think she has one in every game in 2016) and Vivian Nguyen stood out in the midfield. By the fourth quarter, there was nothing left to do but enjoy the moment.
“We’ve looked forward to this all season,” said head coach Charles Bernard. “Everyone put in the work with the goal of being back-to-back champions, and that’s what we’ve done. It’s pretty incredible.”
The Ottawa Swans men’s team will have their own opportunity for a Premiership on Saturday, as they advanced to the Grand Final with a convincing victory over the Hamilton Wildcats.
A wet and rainy affair at the Manotick Polo Club saw the Swans take an early two goal lead after the first quarter with goals from Alex Huard, Kyle Graham and Myles Legundi. But as conditions got worse it became more difficult to score. Half time saw the Swans ahead but in a tight battle.
The Wildcats were a big, well organized side, and were able to keep the ball to the middle of the field and outside of their defensive 50 for most of the first half. But the Swans fitness allowed them to outlast the Wildcats pressure.
The third broke the game open, with the Wildcats unable to muster a point. Finally, Matt Powell put the Swans too far in front and sealed the game. At the final horn, the Swans won 60-21.
This is the first time the Ottawa Swans will compete in the AFL Ontario Grand Final since their inception in 2007.
The Swans will compete against the first ranked Toronto Rebels on Saturday at 2:00pm at the Humber College South Campus in Toronto.
