The past Saturday May 7th, both the men and lady Swans took to their new home grounds the Manotick Polo Club to play for the Pony Platter Shied. This traditional pre-season game is a “friendly” against teams from AFL Quebec.
The “Pony Platter” is no longer just for boys! The Lady Swans faced off for the first time in 2016, against the Montreal Angels. In the end the Swans were victorious. With multiple players getting their name on the score sheet. Of note was first year Swan Belinda Wozniak, who kicked 2 of the 6 Swans goals. The ladies played on the full field with 14 players aside, which translated to lots of running. Unlike the Angles the Swans had players on the interchange which helped in the final quarters. The final score was 6.6.42 vs. 0.0.0. These teams will meet 3 more times this season.
The second match of the day saw the men’s side defend their 2015 win against the Quebec Saints. The boys in red and white were successful in keeping the Shield here in Ontario for another year with a score of 13.7.85 vs. 4.6.30.
The win was attributed to the good work around the contest by the mid field and some solid finishing by the forwards. “Joshy” Evans kicked for 3 in his first game as a Swan. The backline was not without work, but the defence stood strong under the pressure of the late surging Saints.
Regardless of the scores, all teams got what they needed from the day, a good, strong warm up to the 2016 season. With plenty of rookies in the line-ups the future of footy in eastern Canada is bright.
