Injuries didn’t hold the Lady Swans back from cinching another victory against the Toronto Central Blues, picking up a 5.8 (38) to 0.4 (4) win.
The first half saw the Swans score four goals, running into the half with a 26 point lead.
While in the second half the Blues stepped up their defense and allowed only one goal, the Swans defense was flawless, allowing no Blues goals for the entire game.
Montreal Swans player Lindsay Belzie was the top scorer of the day, kicking a solid three goals in the full forward position.
It was the inaugural game for two new Swans players, Colleen Afflec and Kirsten Bodashefsky, and neither disappointed.
Afflec was strong on defense, while Bodashefsky embraced an offense role, kicking two goals and many near goals that resulted in behinds.
Holly Costanza continued to prove her strength in the ruck, as fitness and conditioning paid off and she was on the ball throughout the entire game.
She was supported by Montreal’s Margo Legault and Brier Dodge.
Also from Montreal were dominant defenders Mirabel “Mimi” Eboka and Kelsey Martin, who proved to be too much for the Blues and played a key part in the zero goal game.
Both Catherine Geci and Nathalie Presseau had strong kicks that helped the Swans carry the ball up the field and keep it in the Blues side for much of the game.
It was the first home game for Lady Swan’s coach Chris “Rookie” Lockhart, who was pleased with the progress the girls have made.
“The girls were hard on the ball and showed some great shepherding,” said Lockhart. “It was great to see them dominant in the ruck throughout the game.”
He was also impressed with the new players, suiting up as Swans for the very first time.
“There was a great effort from every player on the field against the Blues on Saturday,” Lockhart said. “But I was especially impressed with the new players Colleen and Kirsten who had their first Swans game, and I’m excited to see them progress in the second half of the season.
The Swans are nearing a big weekend, as their spot in second place in the OAFL will be challenged by the third place Etobicoke Lady Roos on July 14.
Swans 5.8 (38) defeated Blues 0.4 (4).
Goals: Lindsay Belzie (3) and Kirsten Bodashefsky (2)
Best: Holly Costanza, Margo Legault, Brier Dodge, Kelsey Martin, Kirsten Bodashefsky
The Swans will next play at home on July 14 at the Rideau Carleton Raceway.
