MATCH REPORT â ROUND 1
BY PETER BOOTH
SENIORS - FINAL SCORE â NOBLE PARK 27-9-171 def VERMONT 20-15-135
A perfect day for footy with 2 colts from last year making their senior debuts â Cameron Dore and Ryan Henderson. There were 3 new faces Luke Cotchett, Sam Kater and Steve Daniher. Several players were unavailable through injury. It was a fairytale start to senior football for Henderson who scored 2 goals with his first 2 kicks in senior footy. He went on to kick three. Dore had 8 disposals in the first quarter. At 1/4 time we led 8-2 to 5-1 with Froud and kicking 5 goals between them.
Mullett and Bardon had plenty of the ball while Henderson had 9 disposals.
At half time we led 12-7 to 11-3 with our on-ballers getting plenty of possession especially Mullett, Bardon, Stephen and Mendes. McLure was getting plenty of hit outs.
In the 3rd quarter Noble Park kicked 9 goals to 3. They were clearly much fitter and teamed beautifully. A couple of yellow cards didnât help our cause. Nummy was sore and Daniher rolled his ankle. Froud was lively and kicked his 5th goal. Our defence was under immense pressure. At ¾ time NP led by 24 points.
Noble Park kicked 7 goals to 5 in the last quarter. They were running in numbers and it was credit to them that they were so fit in the opening round. Froud kicked his 7th in a good performance in a losing side. NP winners by 36 points. Their score of 27-9 reflected at how easy they scored their goals.
Goalkickers â Froud 7, Greig 5, Henderson 3, Cotchett 2 and singles to Mullett, Stephen and Kater.
Best Players â Mullett, Bardon, Froud, Stephen and McLure.
Possessions â Mullett 38, Bardon 32, Stephen 30, Cotchett 24, Mendes and Dore 21, Cullen 19, McLure and Froud 16. McLure took 8 marks and 32 hit outs.
1%- Mullett 12, Mendes 11, McLure 10, Morse and McCarthy 9.
Coachâs Comments â We must work harder and be better prepared for a match. We were beaten comprehensively. They kicked 16 goals to 8 after half tine with the bulk of their goals coming from their mid-fielders.
RESERVES FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 18-13-121 def NOBLE PARK7-11-53
Half of the reserves team consisted of colts from last year and when a few senior players are available they should be very competitive. McInerney didnât play for Box Hill and starred for the Eagles. By half time the game was in our keeping leading 10-5 to 2-5. Stewart was good in defence with Luke Davis, Debney, Ryan and Rosewarne all doing well.
We kicked 7 goals to 1 in the 3rd quarter but in the final term Noble Park kicked the last 5 goals of the match to take some of the shine off our victory. Vermont winners by 68 points â our only win for the day.
Goalkickers â Handley and Rosewarne 3 each, Dressing, Ryan, Bright and McInerney 2 each with singles to Tsindos, Rogneda and Ilott.
Coachâs Best Players â McInerney, Ilott, Rogneda, Stewart and Rosewarne.
The senior coach ordered stats to be taken on certain players and here they are as tabulated by John McCarthy. Possessions â Debney 24, Tsindos and Jones 18, Luke Davis 16 and Shambrook 13.
Coachâs Comments â It was a scratchy start but our 2nd and 3rd quarters were good. We unearthed some good exciting players today. The 13 new players in the team really came together. They got some cheap goals in the last quarter â we had many blokes cramping.
COLTS FINAL SCORE
EAST RINGWOOD 12-17-89 def VERMONT 12-12-84
Both Noble Park and Balwyn are unable to field colts teams this year so it makes for an unusual draw.
Two evenly matched teams with East Ringwood inaccurate early. Both teams moved the ball well but ER had the height advantage in the air. At ½ time they led 4-8 to 4-4.
We increased our tackling and intensity in the 2nd term. Quon took a spectacular mark and kicked a goal one of his 7 marks for the day â 5 of which were gems.
It looked good immediately after half time. Pretto goaled to put us in front then Humphrey kicked 2 goals in quick succession and we were 13 points in front. Quon took 3 good marks, Carrodus was doing good work in the ruck and a smother by Geraghty was a beauty. East Ringwood then slammed on the next 5 goals. They got a couple because we didnât punch in defence and because of an awful turnover. They led at the final break by 20 points.
It was a terrific last quarter as we kicked 5 goals to 3. We began with 4 behinds then they goaled. Williams kicked 3 goals in the term as we hit the front with a minute to go. They got the centre break too easily and goaled on the siren and won by 5 points.
Goalkickers â Williams 4, Quon 3, Humphrey 2 with singles to Pretto, Castersen and Colasanti.
Coach Graeme Hockingâs Best Players â Johnson,Gabrial, Quon, Huisman, Geraghty and Carrodus.
Coachâs Comments â A pleasing fact we had 103 one percenters. The turnovers in the 3rd quarter really hurt us. There was lots of genuine effort. We still have a lot to work on but if thatâs the best they can throw at us we are not far away.
