SENIORS FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 21-22-148 def EAST BURWOOD 12-9-81
A cold day but thankfully the rain stayed away. There were 4 changes with Morse, Hall, Williams and Cassidy all returning from injury. Out were Emley, Ford, Mendes and Webster who is out for the season. He aggravated an old shoulder injury against Croydon. We had 2 players reported Cassidy and Frankish. At the time of writing this report both players will take the automatic 2 week suspension.
EB came out all fired up playing strong in-your-face type football. It took 10 minutes before the first goal deadlock was broken by EB. Bardon scored our first via Greig. One of the highlights early was a classic hip and shoulder by Simon Frankish. Shortly after he was red carded protecting team mate Williams. EB kicked a couple before Greig goaled via Froud then Mullett goaled via Morse. O’Grady and Papillo were grand in defence. At ¼ time EB led by 9 points 4-4 to 3-1.
We then had the breeze in the 2nd quarter. EB kicked the first but we answered with the next 4. Froud goaled then Greig kicked a beauty from the angle and when Talevski goaled we led by 3 points. It was great to see Cassidy back as he goaled on the run. The Rams would not go away and kicked the next 2. Before the break Greig goaled via O’Grady then Millhouse goaled via Cassidy. We went in at ½ time leading by 14 points 9-8-62 to 7-6-48. Better players for the half were – Papillo, Cullen, Bardon, O’Grady, Mullett, Morse Hall and McLure.
It was certainly game on when EB kicked the first 2 after the break but that was the end of their run for the day. We could have blown them away in the 3rd quarter as we kicked 3-8 to 2-2. Greig kicked 2 for the quarter both via Bardon whose right foot was as lethal as ever. Davidson kicked a long goal from a tight angle. Mullett and Bardon had exceptional quarters with McCarthy and Holmes among many others that did well. At ¾ time we led 12-16 to 9-8 and we had the wind in the last term Hall and McLure were doing well in the ruck and in general play.
The last quarter was a whitewash as we kicked 9-6 to 3-1. Mullett kicked a fine captains goal then Millhose goaled from a Davidson defensive spoil. McCarthy was to figure in 2 goals as Yze came up the ground looking for kicks. More goals came from Greig with Bardon again in the build up, Holmes, Morse, Greig, Cullen and Millhouse. Vermont home by 67 points with no added injuries but the 2 reports. Better players for the half were – Bardon, Mullett, McCarthy, Cullen, Papillo, Greig, Morse, O’Grady and Holmes.
Goalkickers – Greig 7, Millhouse 3, Talevski and Mullett 2 and singles to Bardon, Morse, Cassidy, Froud, Holmes, Cullen and Davidson.
Best Players – Bardon, Mullett, Papillo, O’Grady, McCarthy, Cullen, Morse and Greig.
Possessions – Bardon 38, Mullett 32, Cullen 30, O’Grady 28 and 25 each to Papillo and Morse.
1%- McCarthy 15, Holmes 9, O’Grady and Hall 8 with Papillo, Mullett, Bardon and Rushton 7 each.
Coach’s Comments – Some fantastic team efforts today. We must learn how to protect one another. (I think the coach was referring to a couple of incidents that happened during the game).
RESERVES FINAL SCORE
EAST BURWOOD 11-19-85 def VERMONT 7-12-54
East Burwood were undefeated in the reserves and kicked 3-4 to one behind in the first quarter. They simply ran and worked for each other. If the Rams had have kicked straight in the second term the game could have been all over. They added 3-8 to our 4 behinds to go in at half time leading by 37 points. Our better players for the half were hard to find but included Luke and Josh Davis and Johnson.
It was a different story after the break. Kicking with the wins Vermont kicked 5-6 to 2-2 for the quarter. Bordin kicked our first goal of the match at the 2 minute mark which sparked a revival, You could see the players lift and when Conroy snapped a beauty and Luke Davis goaled on the run all of a sudden the game had changed complexion. Mendes goaled via Griffiths and then Luke Davis who was clearly our best player kicked his second for the quarter. At ¾ time EB led 7-14 to 5-11.
Early in the last quarter we kicked the first 2 goals through Bordin and Mariniello and all of a sudden the margin was only 3 points. We had come from a seemingly hopeless position to be in a winning one. Unfortunately that was it as the Rams booted the next 4 goals to win by 31 points. As Jeff Rudd pointed out – despite all our good work in the 3rd quarter and for a few minutes in the last their winning margin was almost the difference at ½ time.
Goalkickers – Bordin and L.Davis 2 with singles to Mariniello, Mendes and Conroy.
Best Players – Luke Davis, Josh Davis, Johnson and in patches Smith, Whitchell and Mendes.
Coach’s Comments – A much better effort in the 2nd half but the effort took its energy toll. We have to get a few things right for Blackburn next week after they gave us a touch up in round 2.
COLTS FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 20-15 135 def EAST BURWOOD 6-5-41
A solid first quarter kicking 4-1 to 1-2. McInerney was at his brilliant best kicking 2 in this term with other goals coming from Debney and Murphy. McDonald and Bird were also good early. At ¼ time we led by 17 points. The Rams kicked the first 2 of the 2nd term but 2 goals from Will Debney steadied the ship. We then went through a patch of inaccuracy kicking 5 behinds. McDonald goaled late in the quarter and our margin at ½ time was 28 points. Better players for the half were – McInerney, McDonald, Dore, Henderson and Bird.
We blitzed them in the 3rd quarter kicking 4-8 to 2-2. Again we missed some gettable
Goals. Rodneda and Siakavalis kicked the first 2 goals of the term with Henderson, Bull and McInerney helping in the build up. Late in the quarter enter Jacob Huisman who suffered an eye injury against Noble Park and has since been in hospital with asthma. Jacob kicked 2 goals in 4 minutes as Vermont went in at 3/4 time leading by 52 points.
In the last quarter Huisman booted 3 of the first 4 goals to take his tally to 5 in eleven minutes playing time - a remarkable effort. From then on it was party time for the colts with Rogneda kicking 3 and singles to Henderson, McInerney and Johnson.
Better players for the half were – McInerney, Huisman, McDonald, Handley and Siakavalis. Vermont winners by 94 points.
Goalkickers – Huisman 5, Rogneda 4, McInerney and Debney 3 with singles to Siakaalis, Murphy, Henderson, McDonald and Johnson.
Coach’s Best Players – McDonald, Close, Debney, Huisman, Cameron with a special mention to Rogneda and McInerney.
Coach’s Comments – In the second half the cream rose to the top. We still need to work harder when the ball is below our knees. A solid win but we still need more encouragement for each other.
