REPORT – VERMONT v EAST RINGWOOD
BY PETER BOOTH
A Magnificent day for the opening match. Perry Fletcher received his No1 Membership ticket and the pre match lunch was a great success with our senior coach David Banfield one of the many guest speakers. The seniors had a great win, the reserves struggled at times but will improve on their loss and the Colts look the goods.
Bernie Dinneen came back after 12 months travelling with a blistering performance and Ryan Cassidy who missed a lot of last year through injury tackled and won the hard ball as usual. Ryan Webster from East Perth played his first game a showed promising signs. Ben Holmes returned through the reserves after being away from the club since the end of 2001 and kicked 7 goals. So, if we get Tom Davidson fit for round 3 along with Henley and Rushton we should have a formidable side.
SENIORS FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 21-16-142 def ERINGWOOD 15-10-100
Papillo and O’Grady combined to give Greig the first goal. ER kicked the next two. Mendes applied a good tackle and shortly after Froud kicked a beautiful long goal. Bardon was flattened and Greig kicked his second with the resulting free kick. At this stage we had only been inside 50 metres 5 times but we kicked 3-1. Cassidy was tackling hard and Ross was playing well after Hall went off for a breather. Mendes and Dinneen were the links which led to another great snap goal by Froud. Dinneen applied a strong tackle and picked up the spillage to goal. Up forward Holowiuk and Vogels were causing us major problems.
¼ Time scores – ERingwood 5-3 leading Vermont 5-2
ERingwood began the second quarter well kicking 3 of the first 4 goals with Mendes kicking his first. New boy Webster was starting to get a few touches and during the quarter Williams was moved on to Vogels and did well restricting him to just 2 goals for the remainder of the match. The pressure was immense as Mullett hand passed to Bardon for a goal. Holowiuk was still proving a handful for McCarthy. The tackling by both sides was ferocious. Millhouse who played with a broken nose kicked a great angle goal and followed soon after from a sensational team build up. Unfortunately ER kicked the last 2 before half time to lead by 7 points.
½ Time scores – ERingwood 10-7-67 leading Vermont 9-6-60
Better players for the half were – Mullett, Dinneen, Morse, Cassidy, Hall, Papillo and Williams.
The third quarter was all Vermont kicking 9 goals to 2 in a breathtaking performance. Webster kicked his first goal for his new club via a shepherd by Mendes. Mendes was doing remarkably well with his body use and tackling and was destined to be one of our better players. Bardon got the centre clearance and Greig kicked his third. The Eagles were tackling better than ER and Dinneen’s work rate was first class. Mullett who was having a fine captains game goaled after Morse and Hall figured in the lead up. Millhouse kicked his third thanks to Mullett and Froud.. Froud looked like a Stawell Gift runner kicking a wonderful goal via Dinneen. We were slaughtering ER at the centre breaks. Dinneen was having an exceptional quarter and more of his work allowed Cassidy to goal. Greig kicked another and then Froud goaled via Dinneen and Bardon. At the final break we led by 38 points. It was a wonderful quarter by our boys.
¾ Time scores – Vermont 18-9-117 leading ERingwood 12-7-79
In the last quarter ER kicked 3 of the first 4 goals. Froud kicked his 6th with help from Waller who showed many good signs during the day and seems well up to senior footy. Greig kicked his 5th after weaving through a pack and Cassidy capped off a fine game with our last goal. It was an inspiring effort by Cassidy after a long lay off from serious injury. VERMONT WINNERS BY 42 POINTS.
Better players for the half were – Dinneen, Mullett, Froud, Hall, Bardon, Morse, Mendes, O’Grady and Webster.
Goalkickers – Froud 6, Greig 5, Millhouse 3, Cassidy 2 and singles to Webster, Mullett, Mendes, Bardon and Dinneen.

RESERVES FINAL SCORE – ERINGWOOD 18-9-117 DEF VERMONT 15-6-96
As I had to host the luncheon JACK MURPHY kindly handled the reserves report.
It took Vermont 12 minutes to get inside 50 for the first time with Holmes kicking the first and second goal. Best for the term were – Holmes, Beed and Conroy.

Vermont managed only 2 goals in the 2nd quarter both kicked by Dressing. New player Beed continued to impress along with Matty Smith. ER doubled it’s score.

In the 3rd term Rosewane looked pretty snappy around the forward line, Holmes continued to impress while Beed, Smith and Dressing had a good chain of passes.

In the last quarter Holmes added another 2 along with Rosewarne while single goals came from Dorbolo and Davis. ER winners by 21 points.

Coach’s Best Players – Holmes, Whitchell, M. Smith, Ford and Emley.
Coach’s Comments – We have something to work on. It was not a great start but we did have a better second half. We should get some talls back next week.
COLTS FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 15-25-115 DEF ERINGWOOD 12-8-80
The long awaited Grand Final rematch. We had recruited well with many boys from last rear still available. East Ringwood told me they were in a team building mode.
New captain Wayne McInernry was quickly in the thick on things passing to Cameron for a goal. We seemed to have plenty of the ball but it was not translating on the scoreboard. At one stage we were 1-6 to 2-1. We missed many gettable goals. We may have been too pumped up. McInerney and McDonald combined for a Dore goal.
McInerney played an exceptional quarter. At the break we led by 7 points.
¼ Time scores – Vermont 2-8-20 leading ER 2-1-13
ER scored first before Handley goaled after a hand pass from Setyana. Handley goaled again this time after a pass from McInerney. Every Vermont player seemed to be contributing as Bull in the back half started a move that resulted in a Humphrey goal. ER kicked the last goal of the term. Vermont led by 16 points. Better players for the half were – McInerney, Handley. Dore, McDonald and in defence Huisman and Close.
½ Time score – Vermont 5-12-42 leading ER 4-2-26
The third quarter was a very entertaining one with Vermont kicking 5-7 to 4-5. ER may be team building but they were having a crack. ER kicked the first 2 goals and there was nothing in the match. It took us 7 minutes to inside 50 as Dore missed a sitter..ER goaled again and led by 5 points before Siakavelis goaled to restore the lead. At this point The Eagles started to open up with goals coming in quick succession. Debney was moved to the forward line with immediate results. Ryan goaled followed by Handley and Debney. Johnson and Debney combined for a Hazelwood goal. At ¾ time we led by 24 points.
¾ Time scores – Vermont 10-19-79 leading ERingwood 8-7-55
We powered away in the final term kicking 5-6 to 4-1.
Debney kicked 4 goals in the last quarter and Cameron 1. I was impressed with Bird, Bull and the run and toughness of new players Humphrey, Huisman and Close.
Better Players for the half were –Debney, Dore, Setyana, Handley, McDonald, Bird, Jones, Ryan and Huisman. VERMONT WINNERS BY 35 POINTS
Goalkickers – Debney 5, Handley 3, Cameron 2 and singles to Siakavelis, Dore, Hazelwood, Ryan and Humphrey.
Coach’s Best Players – Debney, Dore, McDonald, Cameron and Close.
Coach’s Comments – Our disposal was scratchy having 40 shots to 20. It was a good hit out.
