It is with great sadness that I report the passing of three very significant past players / officials of the club. Mitcham historian Garry Wathen has been good enough to provide a brief description on each of them below.
Ken Herbert
Passed away approx a week ago, and was in the news at the time with his association with the Hawthorn Football Club. Especially with David Parkin and Don Scott.
Captain / Coached Mitcham for 3 years - 1950, 1951, and Premiers in 1952.
Also Captained / Coached our reserves for a year or two in the mid 1950`s.
Bill Benwell
( Passed away last week )
Served on the Committee for many years in the late 1950`s & 1960`s.
Was Club Secretary and become a Life Member in 1963.
Bill died in Queensland where he had been living for many years.
A very funny man was Bill Benwell.
Ron (Chooka)Newport
( Passed away last week )
Came to Mitcham form Burley F.C.
Played Senior football and Capt / Coach Seniors for 2 years in 1965 & 1966.
Coached U 15 `s 1968

Our condolences go out to the families and friends of each of these people. All three were very valued for their contribution to our football club.
