This year Blackburn F.C. is aiming to raise community awareness of the Step Back Think (SBT) campaign. SBT was formed in the wake of the horrific injuries sustained by James Macready-Bryan in 2006. James, better known to his mates as MB, was assaulted in the CBD on his 20th birthday on October 13th 2006. A single punch knocked him to the ground where his head smashed against the pavement, resulting in catastrophic brain damage from which he will never recover.
Our Burners Luncheon on Saturday 14th June will have as our guest speaker Ben O'Toole, the Education Officer from SBT.
Ben's background is that he has been volunteering for Step Back Think since 2012 and took on the position of Education Officer at the beginning of this year. Having been a victim himself of a life-threatening assault, he was forced to learn how devastating the consequences can be through experience. Through this role, he hopes to spare others the need to understand the consequences in the way he did.
The whole issue of street violence is very close to our hearts at Blackburn. A number of people will already know that our Assistant Coach, Kyle Matthews, was king-hit outside a Hawthorn Hotel a few years ago and things were looking very grim for some time. Luckily, Kyle has recovered well enough to play football again, although his hopes of being selected for the AFL draft at the time were dashed.
Our footballing opponents on the day, Montrose F.C., have also come on board with us and through the Step Back Think organisation both senior teams will be playing for the Step Back Think Trophy being donated by SBT.
For bookings to the luncheon please contact James MacLeod at james@tobinbrothers.com.au. Cost is $55 which includes a 2 course meal, beer, wine and soft drinks.
