ANGASTON FOOTBALL CLUB

The Angaston Football Club was one of the foundation members of the Barossa & Light Football Association in 1908. However the club was 'formed' in 1879 playing its first game on July 12, 1879 against Kapunda at Angaston. Kapunda won seven goals to nil.

The oldest known Angaston Football Club minute book was from 1899 – 1910 and this still exists. However the next available minute book starts in 1928.

In 1936 an Angaston & Nuriootpa Centenary souvenir booklet was printed and in that publication it states that football started in Angaston in 1870. To add confusion to the starting date, in the first known article printed in the Kapunda Herald in 1879 it refers to 1879 as the formation of the Club.

All of these facts may be true but according to Angaston Football Club historian, Anthony Schubert it seems that the Club as it is known today started in 1879.

Angaston took part in trying to form a competitive football association during the late 1800’s but after a number of attempts the Association did not get officially formed until the 18^th March 1908 and Angaston is one of the two Clubs that has not missed an official season in the 100 years of football.

In its first official match on May 2^nd 1908 for the newly formed Barossa & Light Football Association, Angaston defeated Kapunda 5-11 to 5-2. Charlie Nettell was Captain of the team and the first goal was kicked by Alwin Thamm. The Club has the historical honour of winning the first premiership in 1908.

In the early 1900’s Angaston had a number of clubs apart from the one we know now. The Old Buffers Club was formed on July 2^nd 1910 – R. Angas was Patron- J.E. Gramp President and C.E. Netell Secretary. It was formed one night after a match between past and present footballers – the colours worn were maroon and gold. A Federals Club wearing red and blue was also in existence around 1912. It is unknown how long these two clubs existed.

The early years were extremely successful for the Club winning 6 premierships until 1915 when football was suspended because of the First World War.

Success continued in the 1920’s with another 3 premierships. Angaston continued to be a force in the 1930’s playing in 5 Grand Finals and winning 4 premierships. During this period a name emerged in the Club which was going to have a significant impact on the Angaston Football Club and the local Association for the next 75 years. A dynasty was about to begin.

In the mid 1930’s Morgan, Lacey and Ross Hurn became involved in both football and cricket. Morgan an outstanding cricketer did not play football but left a very proud legacy. Three of his sons, Brian, Richard and Geoffrey played in A Grade premierships. Brian won the Mail Medal in 1970 and was Association leading goal kicker in 1957 and 1963. He coached the Club for 3 years, was Secretary for 11 years and President of the Barossa, Light and Gawler Football Association for 7 years. Brian also had an outstanding cricketing career representing South Australia in the Sheffield shield competition for many years. Richard won the Association goal kicking in 1965 and Geoffrey was Club secretary in 1972.

Brian’s son, William won the Association U15’s medal in 1977 then went on to play 135 games for Central District – returning to Angaston he was A Grade captain for 5 years and coached the U17’s for 3 years. Today William’s son, Shannon after winning the Association U15’s medal in 2001 went on to play in 2 SANFL premierships with Central District and after being drafted into the AFL is an important member of the West Coast Eagles and was captain from 2014-2019 and culminated in being the premiership captain in 2019.

Lacey Hurn coached the Club in 1937, 1938 and won the Mail Medal in 1938. He was president of the Barossa & Light Association from 1953-1967. Then took over as Angaston President from 1971-1974. Lacey’s son, Tony was a member of an A Grade premiership team – was Club treasurer in 1966. He was an important member of a group in forming the Association’s umpiring panel and is a Life member of the B.L. & G. Umpires Association.

Ross Hurn was Captain/Coach of the 1945 Premiership team and after his playing days was an Association Commissioner for 15 years and for a number of years was an Association selector. For his services to football he was made a Life Member of the Association. A very talented cricketer he still holds the record for the highest score in the A Grade local competition – a score of 292 against Light Pass. He was a member of the local team that played against Don Bradman’s eleven on the Nuriootpa oval in 1937.

Like the Hurn’s there are many other Angaston family names that have made a significant contribution to the Angaston Football Club over the past 100 years – names like Trescowthick, Chinner, Kleinig, Miles, Kempe, Sibley, Falkenberg, Hearl to name a few.

In the late 1930’s another young, very talented Angaston sportsman started to make a name for himself – Bob Christie. Bob was not only a brilliant footballer but also a very talented cricketer. Playing for Glenelg, to this day he stills hold the record for the fastest Century in district cricket. Sadly Bob was killed in action in the Middle East during World War 2. A waste of a great talent.

The local competition started again in 1945 after being suspended because of the war. It proved to be a good year for the Angaston Football Club defeating Kapunda in the Grand Final and winning the 1945 premiership. However a lean period was to follow – it had to wait until 1955 for the next premiership. Then another lean period – but it came back with a vengeance winning in 1968 and 1969. This was followed by premierships in 1971, 1972 and 1973. Then the next premiership was in 1977. Ironically Angaston holds a unique record – it is the only Club to have played in a Grand Final drawn game – this happened on 2 occasions. First in 1969 when it drew with Nuriootpa and won the replay. Then in 1977 it drew with Kapunda and won the replay. In the 30 years since 1977 Angaston has only won 2 A Grade premierships – in 1986 and 2003.

Angaston has provided many talented players who have gone on to play in the SANFL including – Bernie Mattiske (West Adelaide), Bill Tonkin (West Torrens), Glyn Trescowthick, Rufus Heidenreich (North Adelaide), Fred Leach (South Adelaide), B. Pfitzner (Norwood), Ken Obst (Port Adelaide), Paul Walker, Tony Walker, Malcolm Johnston, David Hayes, Peter Kleinig, Kym Lehmann, William Hurn, Scott Stevens, Ben Burgess (Central District) Jason Kingsley (Woodville/West Torrens), Paul Garnett, Trevor Reu (West Adelaide).

Players who have gone on to the VFL/AFL include Kent Kingsley (North Melbourne, Geelong, and Richmond), Sean Tasker (Adelaide Crows) and Shannon Hurn (West Coast Eagles). Sam Colquhoun (Port Adelaide), Jack Hannath (Fremantle) and Rhett Montgomerie (Essendon drafted 2022) are the latest AFL additions.

On the receiving end many talented players from the SANFL and VFL/AFL have played at Angaston and worn the blue and white jumper – Ron Benton (West Adelaide), Steven Summerton, Bob Philp and Ross Agius (Port Adelaide) Peter Vivian, Colin Stutley, Daryl Beale, Malcolm McGrath, Barry Norsworthy, Ron Harris, Fred Carabott, Trevor Smitham, Tim Jackson and Peter Collins (Central District), Mick Clingly, Steven Moulds, Scott Lewis, Marc Borholm and David Foote (West Torrens), Steven Moore (Woodville), Pat Tocaciu, Russell Gehling and Peter Cameron (North Adelaide), Tim McNeil and Ugo Colosante (Norwood) and in the 1930’s Gordon Watts (Western Australian State player 6 years in a row before playing for South Adelaide). Hugh Reimers (Western Bulldogs/Fitzroy), Daryl Beale (Richmond) and Owen Guyatt (South Melbourne).

The Angaston Football Club is justifiably proud of its heritage – it has won more A Grade premierships than any of the other foundation clubs. Finally in their 1,247th game (1922-1930 and 1948 onwards), which included losing 10 Grand Finals, the Reserves (B-Grade) finally won their first premiership in 2017 when they defeated Tanunda at Nuriootpa, 7-3 (45) to 3-4 (22). The losing years were 1951/54/58/59/60/70/72/82/86 and 1992.

It retains its original colours of blue and white that it started with in 1879. Its picturesque oval is a landmark in the Barossa and will be the scene of many more great football matches during the next 100 years.

Jackson Murphy selected for Central Zone in State Champs at Whyalla but had to withdraw due to Covid-19. However, Peyton Hartung and Ellie Ward represented Angaston in Central Zone senior girls.

Hayden Henke, Will Cameron, Trent Toy and Kaleb White played for BLG in Under 15 Central Zone Carnival at Kadina and Bianca Muller was a trainer on the day.

Elliot Kurtz represented Angaston in the Barossa SAPSASA football team.

Under 13.5 girls, Izzy Reichelt, Asha Gabel and Ruby Hughes made SAPSASA and Under 16.5 player, Piper Kendle and Under 13.5 captain, Shayla Hughes both ran and Matt Bradley was coach.

BLG boys v Riverland at Berri - Tom Noack played Under 13’s who won, 8-3 (51) to Riverland 0-1 (1).

Kaleb White, Hayden Henke (co-captain) and Trent Toy played Under 15’s and won 9-4 (58) to 3-7 (25). Kaleb was fifth best and Trent kicked a goal.

Ethan Cain and Malakye Kohlhagen played Under 18’s who went down 8-7 (55) to 9-10 (64). Ethan was second best and Malakye fifth, while Kim Hood helped out as a trainer on the day.

Central Zone Under 14 Carnival at Mallala had Eddie Sandow, William Cameron and Mitchell Harvey playing and Bianca Muller as a trainer. BLG were undefeated in the carnival.

Mitchell Harvey and Eddie Sandow were part of the winning team at the 2023 Central Zone Under 15’s Carnival held at Freeling Oval. Mitch made the best player list twice out of the four games. BLG were undefeated to win the carnival.

BLG boys v Riverland at Gawler Central – Unfortunately no Angaston players were in the winning Under 13 team, however, Mitchell Harvey and Eddie Sandow played Under 15’s and they won.

Tom Noack and Lachlan Brown represented Angaston in the Under 14 Zone Carnival at Kadina. Lachlan kicked a goal in one game and BLG won all four games to win the carnival. Brad Toy was assistant coach and Bianca Muller was a trainer.

Mitch Harvey and Eddie Sandow were part of the winning team at the Central Zone Under 15’s Carnival at Freeling and James Noack represented the State in the Under 16 National Championships in Perth.

Angaston have won four out of the eleven non cup/medal matches which have been held since 2005 (2005 at Tanunda, 2006 at Angaston, 2007 at Tanunda and 2013 at Tanunda).

On Sunday, June 5, 2005 Angaston and Tanunda Football Clubs competed for the inaugural R. A. Heidenreich Cup. Best afield on the day was awarded the inaugural Kleinig Medal. The clubs were keen to make this an annual event to celebrate not only their own respective rich histories but also as a showcase for local football. The Panthers and Magpies have been battling each other on the football field for over a hundred years and it would be true to say that victory is worth more than just the two premiership points.

The R. A. Heidenreich Cup has been donated by the Heidenreich family in memory of the late Rufus Heidenreich who was a premiership player at both clubs in the 1930s. Rufus was most likely the first player in the old Barossa & Light Football Association to play in a premiership at two different clubs. He was born at Bethany and his earliest years were spent in the Barossa, however while he was still at primary school his family moved to Adelaide. He later attended Immanuel College where he was a regular member of the Inter College team as well as excelling at other sports including athletics in which he was a more than handy middle distance runner. After school he went to work for Edmonds Department store where he and his mates used to kick the ball around on the roof when they had a spare moment. Occasionally an errant delivery would send the ball sailing out onto busy North Terrace, however it isn’t recorded whether these young men had a recovery procedure for such instances. At the same time he played football for the North Adelaide Ramblers Football Club and was Secretary from 1928 to 1930.

In 1930 a combination of the Great Depression and turning 21, meant he was entitled to adult wages and he was put off by Edmonds and he returned to the Barossa to work for his grandmother on her property at Rocky Valley. The Blue and Whites got wind of his arrival and enticed him to turn out for their 1931 premiership team. To attend training and games Rufus would walk five miles across the hills to Angaston, often getting home well after dark. In late 1931 he obtained work for the Jericho family near Cleve and played the 1932 season for that Club. In 1933 he was approached by the newly formed Yadnarie Football Club to be their Captain Coach. Yadnarie was 12 miles (about 20 kms) from Cleve. However his transport options had improved and he had use of a draught horse to ride to training twice a week and to Saturday matches.

He returned once again to the Barossa in 1934 to sharefarm his grandmother’s Rocky Valley property and decided to transfer to Tanunda. One reason for his decision to transfer may have been that a neighbour, Phillip Lehmann from Vine Vale would drive Rufus to training and matches. He picked the right season to join the black and whites as they were successful that season winning their first premiership in the competition which started in 1908. He received a mention in the Grand Final report in the local paper as being “dashing and clever on half back left”. He stayed at Tanunda for 1935 when they finished third but the 1936 season had him playing in Cummins Ramblers colours as he took a job for a short time with a cousin who operated the Flour Mill there. Later that year after the football season was finished he returned to the Barossa and purchased a vineyard at Vine Vale which is still operated by his family. He resumed with Tanunda and was a member of their undefeated 1937 premiership side. In later years he coached the Tanunda Primary School team while his children were there and as they moved on to the Magpies he became their timekeeper for many years. Rufus’ football career was a wonderful story, highlighting the differences and similarities between football then and now.

The best afield received the Kleinig Medal, donated by the Kleinig family and selected by Rod and sons, Peter and John. Rod Kleinig was a wonderful player for the Angaston club being first registered as a ‘Blue and White’ in 1938 and playing until 1960. Rod was one of four brothers to play for Angaston and his brother-in-law, Roger Miles was also a long term star for the club. Unfortunately for Rod, he never played in a premiership due to a combination of war service and injury. When he was at his peak Angaston had a poor team and this also restricted his chances at ultimate glory. He was vice captain for two years, also captain for the same amount of time, won the club best and fairest in 1947 and regularly featured in the Association goalkicking list. Rod also served the club off the field including four years as secretary during the seventies and was awarded Life Membership of the Angaston Football Club in 1980 and he passed away in 2022, 21 days short of his 99th birthday.

Eldest son, Peter also had a long and productive football career beginning with a Colts Best and Fairest in 1962 when he was just twelve years old and culminating in a A-Grade premiership for Angaston in 1986. He debuted in the Angaston A-Grade at 15 years of age and was so impressive in the losing Grand Final side of 1966 that he received an invitation to train at Central District. He starred in his first trial match earning headlines in the Sunday Mail and was an integral part of the Bulldogs for several seasons. Peter returned to Angaston in the early 70’s and was rewarded with consecutive premierships in ’71, ’72 and ’73. In a star studded line-up he picked up two runner up best and fairest trophies for the Club and received the ultimate personal accolade of Association Best and Fairest in 1973. In the late 1970’s he played several seasons in the WAFL.

On his return to S.A. and the Barossa, the Tanunda Football Club in a moment of sheer inspiration secured his services as playing coach for the 1980 season. The Magpies hadn’t won a premiership since 1963 despite regular Finals and Grand Final’s appearances and could be rightly considered as under performing. Under Peter’s tutelage they played in the next four Grand Finals, winning two of them. The games against Eudunda in particular are still talked about within the local football fraternity. He next coached in Alice Springs for a season before returning to play in his sixth personal premiership at Angaston. He again coached a season at Tanunda in season 2000 and kept his record of never losing to Angaston intact.

Younger brother, John also came through the junior ranks at Angaston and was the last winner of their Colts Best & Fairest in 1969 before the current system of Under 15/Under 17 came into being. John played in the losing Reserves Grand Final in 1970 before tasting A-Grade success in 1972. A transfer in employment resulted in him playing successfully in the River Murray Football League gaining representative selection before he returned to join up with Peter at Tanunda where he was a part of the success in the early 80’s before retiring. While in the River Murray, John was the Mail Medallist for Mypolonga in 1977. John Kretschmer, a brother-in-law of Peter and John also played in premierships at Angaston in the 1970’s.

The overall contribution of these players to both Clubs and to football in general made them worthy nameholders of these inaugural trophies which represent the competitive spirit between the two clubs. The trophies are only awarded once per season with each club taking turns to host the event.

However, it was not a good day for Angaston in the inaugural game in 2005, losing 4-10 (34) to 12-8 (80) and Boh Wall, Tanunda won the Kleinig Medal.

BOB CHRISTIE ANZAC MEDALLISTS

First awarded in 2008 with the inaugural Centenary Cup Game on 25/4/08. The AFC subsequently decided to make it a permanent award and to retrospectively award the medal back to WWII in honour not only of Bob, but all footballers who have served their country in time of conflict. The medal is awarded to Angaston’s best player from the game played closest to Anzac Day.

1919 Murray Bridge

To Murray Bridge by Motor - Interesting Account of the A.F.C. Outing last Week End.

Leaving at 7.20 with the sun just climbing into the sky, it was more than refreshing to pass through the beautiful country owned by Mr. C. H. Angas. The pretty verdure stretched away to the hills on either side, with amid it all the Gawler River, giving the finishing touch.

The orchards coming into blossom attracted attention further on and neat rows of vines, pruned well back, ran into the distance. Nearing Mt. McKenzie, timbered land with grazing areas looked lusciously green and as the run was continued, pleasing country was passed until Eden Valley was reached.

The fine Lutheran Chinch attracts attention as the decline is negotiated and one notes that a well appointed hotel caters for the wants of the traveller and the thirst of the town’s man. The Baptist Church on the hill is a small structure but from modest beginnings big things grow, as is evidenced by the Institute nearby—a modern structure, which is a credit to the little town. The ruins of the flour mill cause thoughts of regret that the town should not still have that monument of progression; but the fates have willed it otherwise. A pleasant run brings us next to Springton, the entrance of the town being down a hill, much the same as at Eden Valley. Not much can be said of it, except that it is one of those many little centres to be found all over Australia, where the pioneer leaves the pleasures of the swirling commercial world, leaves the railroad the crowd and just puts his shoulder to the wheel to prosper himself and his sunny land. One must feel proud of these families who drive in miles to get their mail from the joggetty old coaches that Australia has learned to respect. Some day perhaps we may devote a couple of columns to these interesting modes of travel and their still more interesting drivers, but at present we must follow our heading. Leaving behind a big garden of olives at Springton, we must have said good-bye to the orchards and vines, for the journey only unfolded undulating country, attractive in its ruggedness, but not of much value, even for grazing.

Towards Mount Pleasant the scenery improved somewhat and the dryness was less apparent, but the little town itself was a revelation—the railway has sent it along considerably. A fine bank, hotels and stores, were not the least attractive features and one noted with pleasure that the electric light had been installed by some progressive residents. Here we had a chat with Mr. Branson (brother of the Farmers’ Union’s progressive agent at Truro) who, with our President, Mr Maley, was a keen sport in the old days. The run to Palmer was equally enjoyable. Big rocks that must at one lime have suffered the activities of a mighty ocean, were strewn for miles—in some places, bunches that looked like tremendous eggs; in others, great boulders. When the hills were topped a magnificent panorama of grandeur unfolded itself.

Away into the mists laid the Murray Valley, flanked by far-flung plains, with the silvery stream (from which Australia expects so much) running in twists and bends down below, 25 miles away. The picture from that height was truly magnificent. Down and down we sped as the Palmer Hill unfolded itself, pulling up with a jerk as the town was reached. While there the coach from Mannum arrived and though six people got off at the Post Ofiice, four more alighted at the hotel, yet the vehicle was only like an ordinary cab and carried a fair load of baggage. It was drawn by two horses and how the captain got the whole load on board goodness only knows. As we said: some of these coach drivers can do almost anything. The roads up to this point had been subject to very favorable criticism, and whether or not the lack of heavy traffic was responsible for their condition, they certainly added to the enjoyment of the ride. Turning off the Mannum Road about two miles from Palmer, a back track was taken which revealed plenty of sand and scrub growth, fences of mallee roots and stables and farm buildings of kerosene tins. Even in the midst of this, crops were noticed, evidencing the energy of these outback settlers but for the most part the growth was patchy, and unless favored with early rains will mean a loss instead of a profit. Stretches of mallee and rough stone walls lined the track for many miles, but until Murray Bridge was neared, no healthy crops were seen. In one instance a huge paddock sown with wheat showed only a small stunted patch one side, all the rest having suffered through sand drift and lack of rain. Mallee root fences again came into prominence and they had provided the material by which one “cocky” had constructed his barn.

Murray Bridge showed ample signs of advancement and seemed to well merit the application of its residents for proclamation of it as a borough. (The figures quoted in support of the application showed its population to be bigger than that of Gawler and Mt. Gambier, we understand). Very naturally, it is the railway that has sent it ahead, for it is well within the ken of our vice captain (Mr. L. Zimmermann, who was born there) when the town was but a single-street place with a few old houses. Today in Murray Bridge there are 104 homes each housing two families and sufficient builders cannot be secured to cope with the demands. The fine tarred main street, built by the Government on the 33 years basis, adds considerably to the beauty of the place and its fine station, shunting yards and loco. sheds might take columns of descriptive matter. The business premises are imposing and up-to-date as regards architecture and not the least handsome being the Institute, which, though one of the best outside the city, is already too small to accomodate the assembled populace. Gardens are nicely laid out here and there and at the intersection of the Adelaide and north roads is the pretty Soldiers’ Park in course of preparation. In the centre is an attractive rotunda and the fencing was of the very neat design noticed round many of the town properties—a soft of brown rush, bound with wire and bordered with a white rail along the top and white posts. We are informed that this rush formation lasts for upwards of years. The oval, which is not yet complete, possesses an unpretentious grandstand, but the racecourse is superb and one of the committeemen informed our reporter that they hope soon to have meetings up to the standard of Oakbank. Getting down the hill to the river, one noticed many of the steamers and barges and on Saturday night late the Eudunda Farmers’ fine trading steamer S.S. Pyap arrived. To the left was the pumping plant which supplies with water the whole district for miles round. The main appeared to be about 6 inches and whirring the powerful centrifugal with a 12in. belt was a powerful suction gas engine, with beside it another of similar size awaiting the emergency. Along the wharf were travelling cranes—some steam driven, others using electric power and most conspicuous of the articles they transferred were pipes for irrigation, big stacks of bricks, timber and wool; a farm implement here and there and dozens of cream cans. The big sheds, great rows of trucks and heavy freight engines puffing, made the scene interesting.

That wonderful bridge, about a quarter of a mile across, was keenly admired. Slowly as the trains creep over it, we were told it is sinking and gangs of men are ever at work repairing. On one authority we learned that the painting took three years, so to hazard a guess at the cost of painting would be hopeless. Round to the right is a big several storied flour mill just erected on co-operative basis (and may success ever follow its trail).

Here a large generating plant has been installed to supply the town with electricity and ere this issue has gone to press the official opening of the plant will have been recorded. Night brought admiration for the railway yards, brilliantly lighted with the red glare of locomotives and the rush of steam from safety valves. Thirty seats were generously reserved at the pictures by Mr. Griffin and a first-class show was presented to a crowded house. Our party enjoyed themselves and the fact that the secretary fell asleep and tumbled off his chair was due to his having had no sleep during the previous night, rather than lack of appreciation. Mr. Griffin, like Mr. Piper (hotel), Supt. Carter (who is an old athlete and knew our President well) and many of the residents, complimented the boys on their gentlemanly behaviour.

On Saturday afternoon the team lined up against the Bridges—premiers of their Assn. this season—and a good game was witnessed. Captained by W. Rice, the home team got quickly on the offensive, but Dick Bott was not put in goal for nothing and with a heavy wind in favor the ball soon went down. A mark to Alf Glatz helped, then Fred Thamm put the leather into the danger zone. The home men countered, but Joe Whelan could not bear to see the ball pass him and returned it. Bowden saved once, but the next shot, by Paul Glatz, got past and a behind went down for Angaston. Alf Glatz snared the next one, then after some good passing by Cliff and Keith Wishart, young Obst sent in another. A free to Fred Thamm saw the fourth point registered and after very able defence by the home goalie, Paul Glatz swung in another. The Bridges got away again, but the wind was too strong and after a couple more points, Ed Thamm snapped a sixer, which he very neatly followed with another.

Paddy Nelson did some fine work for the home men and Bowden worked hard. The quarter ended 1-7 to 0. Against the wind, our boys took the defensive, but Martin sent home a nice goal and a behind followed. Dick had to work hard several times, but was relieved by a drive from Snowy Liddle, snapped by Fred Thamm and sent on to

Collin Trescowthick. Daniels sharked and a good run down field saw a behind go to credit of Oliver.

The tide turned, but the home men got away again and Oliver put in another one. One more point brought half-time and the figures then showed 2-7 for the visitors, to 1-4. A look round the ground resulted in an estimate of 150 as the number of spectators present, but they were very enthusiastic.

Resumption gave Angaston the wind and a point went immediately to Ridgway's credit. The captain added another and Alf Glatz had a shot, which was carried out by the wind. A dash by the home men was thwarted by Joe Whelan, then Freddy, from a fine mark, put up the quarter's first sixer. The Bridges fought hard for the next few minutes, but Fred Thamm snared the sphere, sent it down the field and a point went in from the scrimmage. After a long spell, Paul Glatz put up another behind and the quarter ended 1-1 to 0.

Joe Whelan and Zimmy put in some fine work at the start of the last spin, but the home men got a goal as a result of the good work of Oliver, Dutton, Bowden and the captain (W. Rice).

Zimmy and Cliff Wishart shone out for a second or two, then despite a mulled kick by Obst, Paul Glatz got home a fine kick that put the leather into our scoring area. Bowden however, averted what was the best attempt to score that end of the field.

Another goal went to the home men, thanks to Pickering and Pillmote and from a long kick, one of their boys scored a behind. Angaston drove hard for the next few minutes and again almost scored against the wind, but a quick reverse saw Dick Bott putting some fine breaks and he ably kept the leather away till the bell rang.

The final scores were 3-11 to Murray Bridge 3-6. Our boys’ victory was chiefly due to the fine systematic handball.

On Sunday morning a very interesting excursion was made down the Murray on the S.S. Milang, in charge of Captain Sid. Rossiter.

The Milang, which used to be the old Lake Mail boat to Meningie prior to the laying of the Melbourne line, has been refitted to give her a carrying capacity of about 30 ton and just arrived at the Bridge on the previous Thursday with 50 bales of wool. She only draws 2ft. 9ins., and averages about 9 miles an hour.

Engineer Grundy informed us that the river round the bridge is about 50 to 60ft. deep and further talk brought up the name of our progressive townsman, Mr. H. H. Hayes, whom Mr. Grundy said he had known well while that gentleman was on the trading steamer Queen. “There was not a better businessman on the river,” he said and could always supply the ‘cockies’, in fact they would wait for him. Long Island was passed with its willows and beautiful show of greenery and the hills to the left gave place to low-lying lands, growing good crops under irrigation.

Swanport was passsd and here the activities of a new soldier settlement were noted; the uniform concrete homes showing out well.

Great cliffs rose again on the left, then on the swampy land that followed were seen albatross by the score. Though muddy, the water here was fresh, but with a slight taste of magnesia and unless the river is low, or a tidal wave occurs, salt water is not encountered above Goolwa. It has been known, however to come right up to the Bridge.

The Monteith closer settlement land came into view, where, in lieu of two owners, 33 energetic farmers now derive a good living by dairying. Away to the right and left followed great irrigation stretches, supplied from the small sluice gates fronting the stream, but, as the, captain remarked, the seasons can not be relied on; and while then everything looked picturesquely green, he could remember having only a few years ago delivered 30 tons of chaff at a spot which, as he pointed, must have been over a mile away. But given normal seasons, these flats give splendid returns and lucerne and wheat were growing profusely. Eleven miles down, the turn for home was made and to the right was noticed a big travelling crane ready to start on the Monday, at its channel, excavating. The succulent willow seemed to have monopolised the river banks, but the scenery beyond, flanked by hills, was majestic in its grandeur and for the moment one fell to envy of the owners of those sprite little motor boats that tore through the water so capriciously. Our friend the engineer was not in favor of the proposals for the new southern port, but thought that Goolwa was the right place, with a canal through the spit to take in the river traffic.

Footy Trip was to Caulfield Cup and Brad Hughes and Brenton Bascombe managed to back the long-shot winner, All The Good and as per normal it was all good as far as the trip was concerned apart from some of the brands of beer. Brad Hughes, Brenton Bascombe, Matthew Doecke, Craig Doecke, Jeremy Schultz, Greg Bain, Kyle McLean, Hamish McGillivray, Josh Talbot, Sam Feist, Ben McHendrie, Michael Teakle, Matthew Zimmermann, Kym Reimann, Kurt Thiele, Anthony Schubert, Todd Read, Michael Danielle, Andrew Earl and Beau Byster all had a good time. Lots to tell but as they say, "What goes on trip, stays on trip." However, special mentions to Sam Feist, Josh Talbot, Michael Danielle, Brenton Bascombe, Todd Read, Greg Bain and Michael Teakle on their special talents. The flight over was shared with Kapunda's president, Andrew Hayward and Trevor Leslie and the flight home was shared with Tony and Jo McEvoy. Michael Teakle and Andrew Earl's luggage went walkabout on the way home but arrived later on. Notable faces in Melbourne were the Tanunda boys, Norwood Under 19's, Broughton/Mundoora netball girls, Port Power which included Justin Westhoff and Dean Brogan and on Friday night former Geelong/Essendon star, John Barnes who was presented with an AFC stubby holder by Michael Teakle. Old stagers were Anthony Schubert (15th trip), Matthew Doecke (14th) and Craig Doecke (12th). Rookies (for Angaston anway) included Greg Bain, Jeremy Schultz, Kyle McLean, Hamish McGillivray, Josh Talbot, Ben McHendrie, Kurt Thiele, Todd Read, Michael Danielle and Andrew Earl. One more thing about the footy trip was the running into in Lygon Street on the Friday night of former player, Peter Delahenty.

2009 Waikerie

The footy trip forgot to take the left turn at Albaquerky and ended up in Waikerie instead of Berri. While there they met up with former player, Luke Horner and his brother “Bopper”. Those game enough to take the journey included Nicholas Pech (rookie), Sam Feist, Matthew Doecke (15th trip), Craig Doecke (13th trip), Ben McHendrie, Stewart White, Brad Hughes, Jeremy Schultz, Anthony Schubert (16th trip), Ashley Clarke, Daniel Rathjen, Greg Bain, Kym Reimann, Jarred Rathjen, Tom Feist and the bus driver, Paul Beilby. On the way home they provided entertainment on the Morgan punt and then called into the Commercial Hotel where one-time Angaston Hotel workers, Greg “Baldy” and Leanne are now in charge. The much talked about footy trip ‘uniforms’ were produced by former back-to-back Under 17 1979-80 premiership coach and A-Grade player, Tim Knight from T-Shirt City in Hindley Street.

2010 Gold Coast

The Dipped In Gold footy trip to the Gold Coast was held from last Thursday until Monday. A big trip for rookies in Tom Adler, Angus Adams, Matt Ransom, Josh Wight, Matthew Duldig, Nic Falland, Jack Ryan and Matthew Kurtz.

Old stagers included Jeremy Schultz, David Dahlenberg, Brenton Bascombe, Nicholas Pech and Daniel Rathjen. While at the other end of the scale there were a few “life members” in Craig Doecke 14th, Matthew Doecke 16th and Anthony Schubert 17th.

A mate of Josh Wight’s in “Bowy” also made the trip to cover a couple of late withdrawals in Kym Reimann and Louis Hadden. While there the boys caught up with 2003 premiership player, Beau Byster.

2012 Perth

Twenty AFC members attended the footy trip to Perth from October 4-9 which included Matthew Doecke (18th trip), Anthony Schubert (19th), Beau Byster (10th), Dean Ryan, Matt Kurtz, Nick Pech, Michael Pech, Adam Chambers, Joel Wilson, Jack Miles, Jack Ryan, Jeremy Schultz, John Roesler, Aaron Murphy, Daniel Rathjen, Luke Sander, Nic Falland, Lachlan Baker, Shaun Woodards and Kym Reimann.

Late scratchings at the barrier were Craig Doecke in what would’ve been his 17th trip and Ben Egert. Kym Reimann paid the late acceptance fee to attend.

Rookies were Luke Sander, Aaron Murphy, Lachlan Baker and Jack Miles.

The annual "best on trip" was won by Jack Miles 32 votes from Jeremy Schultz 19 and Nick Pech 17. Daniel Rathjen won last year.

"Worst on trip" was Luke Sander 29 votes, from Aaron Murphy 24 and Adam Chambers 16. Kym Reimann won last year. The worst performers from the previous day were won by Aaron Murphy, Adam Chambers, Dean Ryan and Adam Chambers again and they had to wear the special worst performance shirt that day.

Notable highlights were visits to the Big House, put the couch back inside, two free pizzas obtained due to the customer not picking them up, the Olympics, running into Warren Hughes’ father at the Belmont Races which was abandoned half way through due to lack of drink/food service due to the massive crowd and the Morkels. Also six lucky contestants got to ride with Mick the Taxi Driver which was just like the American movies, especially the bit where they cut through the driveway of a petrol station at an intersection to save waiting for the red lights to change.

2013 Sydney

Those attending included Michael Griffiths, Michael Teakle, Matt Williams, Greg Bain, Jeremy Schultz, Matt Head, Aaron Kurtz, Matt Kurtz, Nick Pech, Shaun Woodards, Luke Sander, Jackson O’Brien, Lachlan Baker, Anthony Schubert (20th trip), Matthew Doecke (19th trip), Angus Adams, Wil Falland, Matt Herrmann, Steve Rusca, Jack Miles, James Feist, Daniel Rathjen, Aaron Murphy and Scott Rathjen.

Celebrities spotted included Matthew Lloyd and Adam Goodes at places like Randwick Races and the casino. A surprise drop in by Aaron Blatchford also occurred.

Rookies were Michael Griffiths, Matt Herrmann, Jackson O’Brien and Aaron Kurtz as imports and the local club rookies were Matt Williams, Matt Head, Wil Falland, Steve Rusca and James Feist.

It was the first ever trip to Sydney.

2014 Kangaroo Island

Twenty attended the Footy Trip to Kangaroo Island on September 26-27-28 which included Matthew Doecke, Joel Wilson, Todd Read, Beau Byster, Angus Adams, Anthony Schubert, Jeremy Schultz, Tyler Hutton, Aaron Blatchford, Tyler Phillips, Matthew Blenkiron, James Feist, Brett Woodards, Jack Ryan, Will Falland, Luc Bramberger, Jackson O’Brien, Aaron Murphy, Damian Habermann and Mack Robinson.

First timers were Mack Robinson, Brett Woodards, Damian Habermann, Aaron Blatchford, Tyler Hutton, Tyler Phillips, Matthew Blenkiron, Damian Habermann and Luc Bramberger. Old stagers were Anthony Schubert (21), Matthew Doecke (20) and Beau Byster (11). They stayed at Dudley United Football Club who won the premiership the week before and caught up with former player, Clayton Linke and Dudley United premiership player. Former Islander and now Angaston Under 15 team manager, Alan Willson was also over there checking out his land. Highlights were the basketball game where Beau Byster and Brett Woodards ended up with a trip to Kingscote to get stitches and the trip home on the Sealink was a laugh for some and not others with rough seas and a few of the lads spending most of the trip down the back of the ferry for obvious reasons. It was like being on the Mad Mouse and workers probably hosed off the back of the boat a bit later.

Some surprises with Best On votes with Moose, Jezz, Hutto and Gus all amongst the votes. While beau was most consistent polling in the most games he wasn't the standout and greenhorn blinks took the mantle capturing all the big votes. Top three blinks, beau, Jacko.

For the Worst On, stitches may get bitches but also gets you votes - maybe boys thought they were putting it on dardsy. Gus, driver, hutts also scored couple votes but most interest surrounded the big three in green horns, mack and harbo and the understudy jry. After ding dongle battle harbo has held on to defeat mack with jrys 2nd half recovery getting him to the last podium position.

2015 Darwin

The ‘’Spread the Butter’’ tour of Darwin had a modern day record of 30 attending.

In the mix were Matthew Head, Shaun Haydon, Shaun Woodards, James Parker, Alex Reincke, Michael Pech, Gary Low, Anthony Schubert, Greg Bain, Aaron Blatchford, Andrew Johnston, Matthew Doecke, Ben Egert, Josh Young, Matt Blenkiron, Blake Homes, Jake Hood, Ben Fairey, Jack Miles, Steve Rusca, Tyler Phillips, Beau Byster, Jack Ryan, Josh Koch, Jake Finch, Thomas Flight, Steven Dekker-Price, Nic Falland, Matt Kurtz and Angus Adams.

It was also a modern day record of 13 rookies on the trip which was the first ever to Darwin.

While there they ran across 2003 premiership player, Craig Gerlach; former player, Wade Kingsley and Hawthorn’s Cyril Rioli.

At the Adelaide Airport was 1982-83 player, Rob Thomas who also coached the Under 17’s in those years and in Angaston last week was 1970 Under 15 and 1975 Under 17 premiership player, Graham LePage.

2016 Mount Gambier

The 47th “known” Footy Trip was held on the long weekend at Mt. Gambier - "Fill Ya Bloody Piss Take Boots Tour"

Twenty-five attended the first winter football trip, weatherwise anyway.

The weather must have given everyone “laryngitis” as they could all talk loud and well between 3 and 5 a.m. but for some reason coming home on Monday not a word was spoken for around five hours.

Those attending were Blake Homes, Jack Miles, Matthew Blenkiron, Ben Egert, Josh Koch, Anthony Schubert, James Feist, Beau Byster, Joel Wilson, Tyler Phillips, Jack Ryan, Jake Hood (who celebrated his 21st birthday while there), Matthew Kurtz, Michael Pech and Matthew Williams.

There were 10 rookies (Green Horns) on board: Alex Brackstone, Ben and Jayden Antonie, Toby and Mitchell Talbot, Mitch Wilson, Ryder Eberhard, Jordan Falkenberg, Tom Ryan and Ross Kuhn.

Amazingly there were two lots of twins (Antonies and Talbots) and a half twin (Joel Wilson) and four lots of brothers including the Ryans and Wilsons.

Late scratchings were: Cody Relquyst, Brad Sibley, Jake Finch, Josh Young and Nathan White.

While there they ran into Mack Robinson and his family who were celebrating his mother’s birthday.

Also by accident a few of the lads were talking to a Penola lad when unexpectedly Angaston and former Penola player, Brenton Jones’ name was mentioned.

The lad they were talking to, Luke said that his father used to coach Angaston. The coach was the late Pat Tocaciu who coached the premiership in 1986.

Pat was one of the instigators of the now ‘famous’ chimney painting ceremony at the TST chimney near the roundabout in Nuriootpa.

Some didn’t even use their rooms to sleep in so to speak and some spent up to 14 hours on the first day or so in bed.

Some slept in a different room each night and others could not even find their beds due to bed rustlers.

Everyone celebrated the Western Bulldogs Grand Final win over Sydney except Blake Homes and Ben Antonie.

It was trip 23 for Anthony Schubert, 13th for Beau Byster, sixth for Matthew Kurtz and fifth for Jack Ryan.

On Saturday night an experienced campaigner had to help with late meal service when a local lady’s dessert was a bit late coming. He duly delivered it to her on the stairway to heaven and she gobbled it up in about two minutes, that’s how hungry she was.

Matt Kurtz won best on with 38 votes followed by Michael Pech with 30 and Blake Homes with 24.

For worst on, Mitch Wilson had 39 votes in front of Jordan Falkenberg 25 and Blake Homes 12.

2017 Gold Coast

Twenty one journeyed to the Gold Coast from Thursday night to Sunday, October 5-8. Ross Kuhn was scratched at the barrier. Good time had by all at the poolside on Friday and Gold Coast Races on Saturday with a lot of 'dancing' on the three evenings.

2018 Darwin

The annual footy trip was to Darwin. Jack Miles, Nic Falland, Matt Kurtz, Michael Pech, Angus Adams, Tyler Phillips, Tom Ryan, Callan Lowke, Tom Adler, Jayden Antonie, Jake Hood, Joel Wilson, James Paprotny, Jack Ryan, Josh Young, Lachlan Duell, Matt Blenkiron, Mathew Booth, James Parker, Josh Koch, Blake Homes, Ben Egert, Adam Rogers and Matthew Doecke all attended.

While there they witnessed former player, Steve Rusca play a game for Southern Districts in their win over the Tiwi Bombers. Steve was sixth best player.

Highlight was Josh Young missing the plane flight home.

2019 Wallaroo/Jamestown

From October 5-7 it was the Angaston Football Club’s 2019 Wallaroo Steeple Chase Handicap Footy Trip at the Jamestown Races and Wallaroo.

Those attending were Josh Young, Jack Ryan, Jake Hood, Tom Ryan, Jack Miles, Jayden Antonie, Blake Homes, Ross Kuhn, Steven Summerton, Ben Antonie, Jay Shannon, Nic Falland, Angus Adams, Callan Lowke, Joel Wilson, Michael Pech, James Paprotny, Ryder Eberhard, Tom Adler, Marc Borholm, Steve Rusca (best on), Dylan Tuckwell, Tyler Phillips, Josh Koch, Rhys Garland, Matthew Blenkiron, Harrison Schubert, Brayden Dalby, James Parker, Tyler Hutton, Alex Brackstone and Riley Argent.

Rookies were Steven Summerton, Rhys Garland, Jay Shannon, Marc Borholm, Dylan Tuckwell, Harrison Schubert, Brayden Dalby and Riley Argent.

This end of season trip was 100 years since the first “known” trip was held.

On September 27-28, 1919 a team of 30 ventured to Murray Bridge which had 104 houses in it at the time – in 2016 it had 9,664. Back then they played a football match against Murray Bridge which Angaston won 3-11 to 3-6, in front of a crowd of 150.

Saturday night was a visit to the pictures and Sunday was a paddle steamer trip on the S.S. Milang and as per normal those who attended were congratulated by the townsfolk on their gentlemanly behavior.

Then believe it or not only two weeks later on October 11-12-13, 1919, the Wallaroo Football Club had their end of season trip to Angaston and also played a football match which Angaston won 13-13 to 5-9.

Has been prepping for this trip for 28 years, however may be over worked as a result. Unlikely to run a drum, but very likely to be a drum all weekend. An easier trip home if he does not make it to the finishing post again. Bite guard will be required, but won’t help performance. Stay away. $50/$20

#3 – Dusty Jack – JACK RYAN

A late scratching has given this ageing stallion another chance. Faded late at last year’s meet, back in distance this year should suit. Expect some strong moments, but may be out gunned by bigger players when the race is there to be won. $20/$7

#4 – Oo-Hood - JAKE HOOD

A beautiful, strong looking horse, however Toeyness in the mounting yards has distracted in the past. Gelding must be considered prior to next prep, will significantly reduce weight and work as well as blinkers. Having said this, with experience under the belt expectations increase. Watch. $15/$5

#5 - Tom Wallaroo - TOM RYAN

Unlike older brother Tom Melbourne, this horse rarely cum’s second. A beautiful main and a chin that rivals most horses, unfortunately for this stallion this is not a beauty contest. Expected to be off the pace. $18/$6

#7 – Captain Jack – JACK MILES

Expected to lead as he has all year, leaders bias track suits. Some strong performances this prep, however pulled up lame after the Angaston meet 16/09. Has since recovered well and another strong Angaston showing (21/09) and Christies Beach (28/09) over shorter distance looks to have this stallion well prepped. Big chance. $6/$2

#9 – Sisstar – JAYDEN ANTONIE

It’s been a big year for the younger sister to stable star Ben. This colt is really starting to show his potential and strong blood line on and off the field. Has been in the middle of the pack at previous meets, however enough class and now experience to push forward. My tip as a big improver, a good each way bet. $12/$3

#10 – Black Heart Blake – BLAKE HOMES

It’s hard to believe that this horse is still classed a colt, given its impressive record to date. Has been known to love a longer trip, will the reduction in distance effect his form? A slighter built horse, that doesn’t sleep well, nor eat well, yet manages to deliver consistently, performance enhancing substances must be queered. You can guarantee this colt will finish in either the top or bottom 3, which one only time will tell. $7/$3

#12 – Bring Me Rosses - ROSS KUHN

A big improver this year, who’s form on and off the park has come on in leaps and bounds. Distractions at previous meets from heavy fillys’ has cost this colt, we only hope he has learnt from experience. Showed a lot of promise and excited many at recent Angaston meet (16/09) however died as they entered the straight over a similar distance. Will be better for the run and if you like a roughie, this may be your guy. $22/$7

#14 – Winx - STEVEN SUMMERTON

Comes back a division and has shown why he has been so successful at group 1 level. Has had strong performances over shorter distances this year, however yet to be tried over the longer journey with this group. As he has all year, expect this stallion to live up to expectations. $11/$3.5

#15 – Brown Ben – BEN ANTONIE

Previous trainer was never able to get the best out of this colt, and a recent return to his home stable has paid dividends for owners with a big increase in form. Recent form by younger sister Jayden has been promising, but we know how competitive this beast is and will not be afraid to get physical… again. Expect a big show to continue his dominance over stable mate, but may be outgunned by other runners. $15/$5

#17 – Neigh Shannon – JAY SHANNON

Has been a very important addition to the stable this year. Yet to be seen over this distance by this group, however appears to be more than capable… just ask him. May be the best bet for any of the boys looking to get lucky this trip, as history suggests he does get handsy in these environments. Zoomby Zoomby Tugga Tugga!! $14/$4

#19 Holesman - NIC FALLAND

Fiesty. Loud. Angry. A serious competitor, who relishes this distance and history, as well as recent runs suggests this stallion will be a serious contender. Will his volume, angry nature and eagerness cost him votes though? I’m guessing almost definitely. Yet his best is very good and must be considered. $12/$4

#21 – Four Beers Please – ANGUS ADAMS

Family commitments mean this stallion will be pulling stumps after the first lap. We can expect this stallion to come absolutely charging out of the gates to try to make up for time that will be lost, however retiring early makes the big fella no chance. SUSP.

#23 – Midnight Calboy – CALLAN LOWKE

This colt is nearing stallion status, and has become a regular respected performer over a number of years over this distance. Very much a stayer, expect this colt to be on the pace all trip, however turn of speed when required may just leave him mid pack. $20/$6

#24 – Yulong Cushions – JOE WILSON

Past Yearling of the year winner, however has struggled to go on from there. Still shows glimpses of absolute brilliance that rivals with the best, however this distance is not suited. Likely to be one of the final runs for this crowd favourite before being put to stud, if Penny and Panda are any indication. Can he go out with a bang? $20/$6

#25 – Mr Quickie – MICHAEL PECH

This stallion has had more runs than who shot the barman, and continues to deliver each year. An absolute crowd favourite, whose age would suggest is getting towards his twilight trips, however attitude and form tells a different story. Experience is the key to this campaign; I expect examples to be set throughout the trip to the yearlings. Eachway chance $11/$3

#26 – Happy Papper - JAMES PAPROTNY

The type of guy that you could spill your drink all over at 3am when you’re buckled and he’d probably apologise and buy you a new one, Happy Papper is the Stallion this group needs but not the one it deserves. Currently on the hunt for a young filly, and a big chance to charm a local talent, a move that may end in an increase or decrease in votes. A known stayer and this distance is no issue, but may be outgunned in a sprint to the line. $18/$5

#28 Ryda-Ding-Ding - RYDER EBERHARD

Another colt who’s previous trainer couldn’t keep fit, but a return to home has seen his body sound and owners have reaped the rewards, with outstanding form over the campaign. Was a very strong performer over a similar distance in Mt Gambier (2016) but has not since been seen by this group over a similar journey. Will on track performance translate off the track as well? Watch. $18/$5

#29 – Rocket Tommy - TOM ADLER

A very strong performance at the Gold Coast meet (2017) where he featured in a top 3 result, however was disappointing in his follow up of Darwin (2018). Recent form suggests that this distance may be more than this little paddler can handle, but may be keen to show that 2017 was no fluke. A good smokey $26/$8

#30 – So Si Bomber – MARC BORHOLM

Another stallion back in class who has lived up to the hype and shown strong form throughout this campaign. Recent Angaston meet (16/09) showed some very positive signs, however failed to put it all together over the whole trip. A genius move by the trainer to take this stallion up to the Gold Coast to get some work in, perfect preparation for a tilt at the cup. Big, strong build on this horse, expectations are very high. $8/$2.5

#32 – Lemon Neigh – STEVE RUSCA

A strange move by trainer at the end of the 2015 campaign to drop this star stallion back in grade, where he really cashed in on races well below his weight. Returning up a grade this prep, this stallion has lived up to expectations, and was one of the main players at the recent Angaston meet (16/09). No stranger to this distance, don’t let the thinning main fool you. This horse is ready to go! $5/$2

#34 – Champagne Tuckles - DYLAN TUCKWELL

Looking to break its maiden, there have been signs over this prep that have really excited us about this yearling. Whilst a recent Filly joining the stable slowed form from what was promised early, the trainer is hoping that a change in scenery to Wallaroo, away from said Filly may just show us the best that this yearling can offer. Expect this to be a steep learning curve, and will be better for the run. $32/$12

#37 – Nature Flip - TYLER PHILLIPS

Don’t let the size of this stallion fool you, the heart of this horse has led to arguably our most consistent performer in recent years. Yes he lacks size, yes he lacks a main, but gee he will be right there at the final charge to the post. Build-up this prep has been as consistent as ever, expect a big performance over the perfect distance for this stallion. $8/$3

#38 – Rogan Josh - JOSH KOCH

Our well-deserved equal favourite, there’s not much not to like about this stallion. Punching out benders as easy as he wins flags, expect to be right on the pace for the whole journey. The flexibility to lead, as well as chase down late, no matter how the race pans out rule out at your own peril. A very safe bet, with his biggest competition coming from his big dumb idiot mate. $4/$1.5

#39 – Yulong Rex - RHYS GARLAND

The stable is very excited for this well respected stallion to be having his first run in the blue and white silks. Has shown a lot of promise this prep, and has been a consistent winner over short distances at the trials this year. The only danger to this stallion is the distance, as has been known to pull up very lame after one lap. If he can get on top of this early, expect a big showing and to be right there at the finish. $10/$3

#40 – Blinkers On - MATTHEW BLENKIRON

As dumb as he is big, this monster stallion lives for these events, and as a result rightfully earns equal favouritism. This stallion has had some big showings in recent years, and expect this meet to be no different. A recent addition of a filly into the stable is the only change over this prep. Will we see any change in performance due to this? I highly doubt. Let’s hope the alehouse is well stocked with rum. $4/$1.5

#42 – Harrison - HARRISON SCHUBERT

Another runner looking to break his maiden, this yearling comes from a strong bloodline that has performed well over a number of years on these trips. A big reputation to live up to, to keep the family name proud. Expected to learn a lot over this trip and be better for the run, a big question mark remains over how the time away from his filly will be managed. $35/$13

#43 – Yulong Dalby – BRAYDEN DALBY

An unknown quantity too many on this trip, has experience over similar distances, however this has yet to be seen by this group. Has had a point to prove this prep, and I hope there is one more point left to tick off, footy trip. His best is more than good enough, and if he can piece it together over the full journey, expect him to go close. $16/$6

#50 Parkerup Boyzzz – JAMES PARKER

This big, angry stallion absolutely burst onto the scene with a standout performance in Darwin (2015) and has been a consistent performer since. Whilst off track incidences may have resulted in this stallion keeping his head low in recent years, you’d be crazy to rule out given his potential. Chances of scaffolding in Wallaroo is slim, probably for the best. Consider. $13/$5

#51 Huttnell – TYLER HUTTON

The strangest horse in the field, this stallion will have some of the best, as well as some of the most retarded moments over this journey. Big chance to be distracted by the fillys over this trip, and be taken away from votes in the process. Distance is no issue for this stallion, and another who is a strong chance to finish in either 3, be that top or bottom. ($16/$5)

#58 Brack Caviar - ALEX BRACKSTONE

Showed early promise in previous years, however the farrier being unable to sort a persistent hooves issue has cost this stallion a lot of fitness. Expected to come charging out of the gates and go missing very early. Must be kept well away from the pokies and port if he is expected to be any chance, however we know this is unlikely. Avoid. $35/$10

#60 - Arg Mahal - RILEY ARGENT

Rounding out the field, our final yearling looking to break his maiden. A very good looking yearling this one, who has shown all the signs to have a very successful career on and off the track. My tip of the yearlings, but likely to be out of his weight division amongst some of the more seasoned campaigners. $28/$10

2020 Renmark

A visit to the Woolshed Brewery at Paringa was a highlight and while at the brewery former players, Tyler Hutton and Tim Brown were both spotted.

Also on the way to Renmark members ran into another former player in Sam Feist at Waikerie.

Then on Saturday night current players in Joseph Egan, Aiden Hocking and Samuel Walker turned up out of the blue and added life to the party.

Games started on Sunday, July 2 at Tanunda Oval. Under 14 at 9.30 a.m. and Under 17’s at 10.40 a.m. The first ever kick was by Jocelyn Stephens (daughter of former player, Leigh) and the first goal was kicked by Hayley Henke.

Under 14 Captain was Olivia Rudiger (daughter of former player, John) and they won 15-17 (107) to Nuriootpa 1-2 (8) and a few girls had to fill in for Nuriootpa.

Goals: Hayley Henke 4 Molly Fiebiger 3 (daughter of former player, Darren), Kate Argent-Bowden (grand-daughter of life members, Eileen Argent and Malcolm Johnston), Maggie Hadden (daughter of former player, Craig), Jocelyn Stephens 2 and Courtney Trenwith and Abby Whitehorn.

Best On Ground was Hayley Henke.

Coach’s Award went to Jocelyn Stephens and Encouragement Award to Dominique Trinne (grand-daughter of former player, Dean).

Others in the team were Tayissa Hayden (daughter of goal umpire, Bob) and Cooper Hyde.

Under 17 Captain was Kate Harris and they won 7-7 (49) to Nuriootpa 3-6 (24).

At the Central Zone Girls’ Carnival on June 18 at Snowtown, Kate Harris won Under 17 overall best player and Neeve Reimann (daughter of former player, Nick) won it in the Under 14’s. Cooper Hyde also played in the Under 14 team. Leigh Stephens and Melinda Atyeo are looking after the Under 17’s and Matthew Reimann (former player) the Under 14’s.

The girls played off in both Grand Finals at Nuriootpa but it was an off day for each side.

The Under 17’s went down 0-4 (4) to the unbeaten Barossa District 3-5 (23).

Bethanie Lange, Gypsy Atyeo and Charlotte Spence were best.

Under 14’s went down to the Darcie Brown dominated Kapunda team, 1-4 (10) to 11-3 (69).

Best were Molly Fiebiger, Neeve Reimann and Libby Fiebiger. The goal was kicked by Cooper Hyde.

The matches were witnessed by some former club greats in Barry Argent, Gawler; John Herrmann, Adelaide and Neil Argent who now lives in Armidale, New South Wales.

The girls’ presentation day was held later on at the Football Clubrooms.

Under 17 winners were: Charlotte Spence, Best & Fairest; Kate Harris, runner-up to Best & Fairest and Coach’s Award went to Bethanie Lange.

In the Under 14’s the Best & Fairest was Kate Argent-Bowden, runner-up was Libby Fiebiger and Neeve Reimann won the Coach’s Award.

Seniors finished premiers in what is the first ever season of senior female football.

With the Senior Open Women winning the first ever premiership it gives the Angaston Football Club a double - also winning the first ever senior male premiership, 110 years ago in 1908.

Keith Ward was the coach of all three grades and was helped by Melinda Firth-Atyeo and Leigh Stephens.

Girls in Central Zone Carnival were Emma Keys, Charlotte Spence and Kate Harris.

Emma Keys made Team of the Championships on half forward flank.

Angaston were well represented at the Central Zone Girls Carnival at Snowtown.

In the Under 17’s it was Cooper Hyde, Allanah Phipps and Jossy Stephens.

In the Under 14’s Tayissa Hayden, Neeve Reimann and Kate Argent-Bowden were the representatives.

Maggie Hadden, Cooper Hyde and Libby and Molly Fiebiger all played for Central District Under 15’s in the women’s competition at Unley.

2019

AnAngaston were represented by Charlotte Spence, Allanah Phipps, Kate Harris, Kc Wakeman, Cooper Hyde and Emma Keys in the female teams for the Central Zone at the Country championships in Port Pirie. Central Zone finished third and Charlotte Spence was named in the team of the championships on the half forward flank.

At the club presentation day, President, Keith Jamieson welcomed 120 people with meals provided by Company Kitchen. Keith touched on the fact that the club would like a female committee to run the female side of the club and to have a voice on the senior committee in 2020.

Keith Ward coached all three grades – Open who lost the semi final, Under 17’s who won the premiership and Under 14’s who were runners-up.

Since female football started in 2017 Angaston are the only club to have won at least one premiership in all three grades – Seniors 2018, Under 17 2019 and Under 14 2018.

Libby Fiebiger was best on ground in this year’s Under 17 Grand Final.

Coach Ward thanked the club, players and his team manager, Melinda Firth for her help during the season along with the helpers such as trainers, goal umpires and timekeepers.

ASSN. 2019 AWARDS: Open – Emma Keys tied for Best & Fairest Medal and Charlotte Spence tied for Runner-Up. Under 17 – Libby Fiebiger won Best & Fairest Medal. Under 14 – Kate Argent-Bowden won Best & Fairest Medal and Connie Clarkson was best on ground in Under 14’s in inaugural North (Angaston, Nuriootpa, Tanunda, Kapunda) v South (Central, South, Willaston, Barossa) matches won by North in Under 14 and Under 17, while South won the Open at Tanunda.

2020

The Angaston Football Club’s female footballers enjoyed their end of season presentations at Wanera Wine Bar, Angaston.

Meredith Dixon, Matt Bradley (Under 14 coach) and Craig Hadden (Under 17 premiership coach and senior coach) presented trophies and were helped by AFC president, Keith Jamieson and female teams’ sponsor, Ashley Ratcliff from Ricca Terra Wines.

Under 14 trophies: Coach’s trophy, donated by Kohlhagen family, Tayla Dixon; Best Team Player, Scoot and Toot Scooter Hire, Jacinta Field; Most Consistent Player, AFC, Miyu Endersby; Runner-up Best & Fairest, AFC, Ellie Ward and Best & Fairest, Sherwood Family; Connie Clarkson. Connie also won the Assn. B&F.

Under 17: Leading Goal Kicker, Hayley Henke with 12 goals; Best Team Player, Angaston Masonic Lodge, Allanah Phipps; Most Valuable Player, Judy Argent/Brian Bowden; Chantelle Linton; Runner-up Best & Fairest, Treloar Family; Kate Argent-Bowden; Best & Fairest, Sherwood Earthmoving, Libby Fiebiger.

Under 17 girls won their second premiership in a row, 4-3 (27) to 0-2 (2) over Willaston.

Best were Libby Fiebiger, Kate Argent-Bowden, Chantelle Linton, Allanah Phipps (vice captain) and Molly Fiebiger.

Goals were kicked by Kate Argent-Bowden, Libby Fiebiger, Hayley Henke and Jessie Maurer.

Other girls to be part of the premiership were Cooper Hyde (captain), Ellie Ward, Maggie Hadden, Piper Kendle, Jossy Stephens, Tayissa Hayden, Tayla Dixon, Connie Clarkson, Molly Byrne and Meg Treloar.

Seniors: Best & Fairest, Libby Fiebiger, donated by Ricca Terra with eight votes; Cassandra Williams, runner-up, Sherwood Earthmoving with seven votes; Kate Harris, Barossa and Beyond with seven votes won the Best Team Player; KC Wakeman six votes won Most Valuable Player award.

Libby also won the top goal kicking trophy with six goals, the Best On Ground Medal in the Grand Final and the Association Under 17 Best & Fairest Medal.

The Jamieson family have donated a perpetual shield to Female Football and it will be known as the Angaston Football Club Female Football Clubperson of the Year, donated by K. & P. Jamieson.

The inaugural winner was head trainer, Robyn March.

2021

Zone Players for Central Zone - Cooper Hyde, Lily Guymer and Hayley Henke in Senior Womens at Victor Harbor/Encounter Bay. Lost all games.

Maddie Sherwood represented the Central District Under 14's and Hayley Henke, Kate Argent-Bowden and Ellie Ward the Under 16's at the Intra-State Championships.

Female team coaches were Darren Unger (Seniors), Dyan Tuckwell (Under 16) and Matt Bradley (Under 13) with all teams playing finals and Matt and his Under 13’s took out the ultimate prize, a premiership.

Meredith Dixon, Judy Argent, Yuka Endersby, Hannah Sweeney and Alannah Phipps also helped run the girls competition.

Miyu Endersby won the BLGW Under 13 Association Best & Fairest medal and Libby Fiebiger was selected on the Interchange in the Senior Women’s Team of the Year.

Miyu is the sixth Angaston winner of a female best and fairest in the four year history of best and fairest winners. Others are Emma Keys 2019 Seniors, Libby Fiebiger 2019 and 2020 Under 17’s and Kate Argent-Bowden 2019 and Connie Clarkson 2020 Under 14’s.

In October, Miyu Endersby, Latika Swain, Shayla Hughes, Sienna Webster-Payne, Alana Linke, Aaliyah Kuhn and Iva Tanu represented Angaston in the Barossa and Light SAPSASA District team that was coached by BLGW Development Co-ordinator/Angaston Under 13 premiership coach, Matt Bradley with help from Yuka Endersby.

This was the first ever girls SAPSASA State Carnival at West Beach.

Barossa finished third overall out of their 10 teams in Division 2, winning seven out of their nine games.

The girls were also very fortunate and super excited to have a visit from Port Adelaide ruckman Scott Lycett.

2022

Around 90 people attended Angaston Football Club’s female awards night last Saturday night in the clubrooms.

President, Meredith Dixon and Under 13.5 coach, Matt Bradley both announced that they will not be continuing (at this stage) in 2023.

Junior Clubperson was Miyu Endersby and Senior Clubperson was her mother, Yuka Endersby.

Aaliyah Kuhn was leading goal kicker in Under 13.5 with 18 goals and Peyton Hartung won for Under 16.5 also with 18.

Peyton Hartung and Ellie Ward played in the Central Zone Country Championships.

Tilly and Jemima Barrett are in the S.A. Under 15 Touch Footy series.

Central District FC Under 14 and Under 16 squads comprised of Under 13.5’s player, Aaliyah Kuhn in the 14’s team along with Under 16.5’s player, Miyu Endersby.

Peyton Hartung and Ellie Ward have both been selected again in the Under 16’s squad.

Also Miyu has been selected as Under 14’s CDFC Captain.

Matt Bradley and Under 13.5’s player, Indy Threadgold represented Angaston in the inaugural South Australian Under 12 Girls Football team at the National Football Championships held at Norwood and Campbelltown Ovals.

2023

Last night we held our womens presentation in the clubrooms. It was a fantastic turnout and night to celebrate our 2023 season and with all our amazingly talented footballers.

Well done to everyone for the year from players, coaches, committee members, sponsors and families. Thank you for all your support, development and love for our incredible panther girls.

We saw our inaugural Under 10's team hit the field for the first time. Well done to coach Rob on his awesome efforts with the girls. They had a brilliant time.

A lot of new players joined the club or played in their first year of footy in Under 13's which was incredible to see their development. It was also the first time we've had a female coach in our clubs history with Hayley Henke taking on the role. Well done Hayley and girls on a great season.

And of course our Under 16's had an amazing season displaying their true character and determination by making history in becoming the first 4th place team in the 7 years of the BLGW to make a grand final. Well done to coach Matty Bradley and the girls for an amazing season once again.

We offically farewelled Matty after 7 years of coaching in the BLGW. He has been a fantastic club person and asset to Angaston and our girls football program with seeing leadership development and many players going onto higher pathways in their footy. We have had some incredible success during his time here with getting into 4 grand finals and taking out 3 flags. So thankyou Matt for every thing. All the best in your future.

Once again thanks to everyone involved including the committee for organising last night. Enjoy the summer break girls and we look forward to seeing you all back out on the oval in season 2024.
