250 Years, 18 Premierships
Ironically the Goolwa and Pt. Elliot Football Clubs combined after a history of fierce opposition dating back over 100 years. Who'd have thought these arch rivals would merge becoming a single identity?
The Goolwa Football Club was established in 1878, the Pt. Elliot team appearing a few years later in 1881. Over the years Goolwa collected 6 A-grade premierships while Pt.Elliot amassed 11. Goolwa's tally included a three-peat in 1975, '76 and '77 while Pt. Elliot claimed 5 in a row, 1935, '36, '37, '38 and '39. Together they accounted for 10 of 13 premierships between 1927 and 1939. Goolwa won in '32 as Pt. Elliot were victorious in '27, '29, '31, '33, '35, '36, '37, '38 and '39.
The two clubs came together at the conclusion of 2000 and the Goolwa/Pt. Elliot Saints were born, wearing red, black and white combining the red and black of the Pt. Elliot Bloods with the black and white of the Goolwa Magpies.
The Saints first game for premiership points was against Yankalilla at Goolwa Oval, Saturday April 7, 2001. SAINTS 17-17-119 defeated YANKALILLA 7-5-47.
Late in 2008 the members of the GPEFC decided on a return to the traditional colours of the Goolwa Football Club. The 'Magpies' were reborn.
Goolwa/Port Elliot's first game in black and white was against Yankalilla at Goolwa Oval, Saturday April 4, 2009. GPEFC 17-8-110 defeated YANKALILLA 10-16-76.
