Saturday the 7th of May we travelled to Mount Compass where the weather was good for football. The day started well with the Under 14’s having their first win of the season. It was a good win played in good spirit and well deserved.
The Under 17’s had another hard game but given their relative positions on the ladder it was a game we took right up to Compass but the last few minutes hurt us. However with a little more endeavour, I believe the boys aren’t far away from their first win.
The Reserves had a good, hard fought game but there were a few signs suggesting we haven’t quite hit our best form just yet. It was pleasing to see Ryan Hislop, in his first year with our Club, give us first use of the ball from some impressive ruck work. Also the younger players are showing good signs as they improve.
The ‘A’ grade, minus a few players, were obviously keen to make amends for the previous week against Willunga. Also Compass having trounced Victor were riding high and this set the scene for a good game of footy. Neither side took a step back and it was a game that had everyone on the edge of their seats until the final siren.
To some a draw is empty but having been 4 goals down half way through the last quarter and to fight back as we did shows good character, something we have been striving for but now we must maintain this determination to the end.
The efforts of Sean Laffin in ruck and Matt Devonshire in his first ‘A’ grade game for us was very pleasing. Also the apparent “Mateship” within all grades shows that as a Club we are heading in the right direction.
We still need help with someone to manage the gate, particularly first thing in the morning and in the canteen so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheer on the Mighty McLaren Eagles.
