2005
–RESERVES & NETBALL PREMIERS

Season
2005 got off to a promising start for the Club’s Senior team with the
appointment of Club Legend Peter Johnston as coach and the playing season
began with great promise as the team won nine of their first eleven matches.
But then disaster struck as the Club was hit with the worst plague of
injuries in the Club’s history. The nadir came when a total of 17 players
were sidelined, many with season-ending injuries. What made the problem even
worse was that many of the long-term injured were key players. A succession
of losses was not halted until the final home and away match but that win
allowed the team to finish in fourth place on the ladder. The team won the
Elimination Final well but it was too much to hope that our thin ranks could
continue to keep out our opponents and the team narrowly lost the semi final.
Although the final placing was disappointing, it was still a strong testament
to the grit of the players in the face of adversity.
The
Reserves team set about defending their 2004 premiership win and even in the
face of Club’s injury woes they did so successfully. The team lost just two
matches during the season and were clearly the dominant team in the
competition throughout the season. After a comfortable win in the semi final
the team went into the Grand Final with confidence of back to back flags. The
Grand Final day was played under extremely difficult conditions with non-stop
rain throughout the match. A combination of skill and courage however, had
the team finishing comfortable winners.
The
Under 18 team finished second at the end of the home and away matches and
then won their Elimination final. However, they then narrowly lost the
Preliminary Final but it had still been an excellent effort by the team. This
was the first time for six years that the Junior team had failed to make it
to the grand final, a remarkable achievement.
The
Veterans team finished fifth in a strong competition and were once again a
wonderful asset to the Club.
For the
first time the Club fielded a netball team and we were naturally not too sure
just how they would go. We need not have had any concerns as the team just
kept on getting better and better as the season progressed and were in second
place on the ladder going into the final series. Both finals matches were won
and thus they finished the inaugural season as premiers, a just reward for
the work put in by all connected with the team.
