Lionel had a deep passion for both Emerald FC and Gembrook, and played with both clubs. In the
seventies, he returned to Gembrook FC as a committeeman and coached the U/17s in 1973. Butch remains the only man in the history of the club to coach all three sides. He played a total of 304 games in his career. Butch was a wonderful storyteller, and because of the full and rich life he had led, he certainly had the stories to tell! Butch was also an excellent cricketer and a superb pool player. He was also a champion woodchopper, being one of the few to defeat the great Martin OToole (Butch was using a chain saw and Martin was only seven years old at the time).
